Indiana University Volleyball wins the Indiana Invitational
The Indiana University Volleyball team is 3-0 after sweeping New Hampshire, Southern Indiana and Radford all by 3-0 scores over the weekend at Wilkinson Hall. The Hoosiers will head out West for the Long Beach State Tournament in Long Beach California Thursday through Saturday. The Hoosiers will face Long Beach State and future Big Ten Conference foes UCLA and Washington.

An outstanding night from the service line, highlighted by four aces from Junior Setter Camryn Haworth boosted the Indiana Volleyball team to an opening-night sweep of New Hampshire on Friday night. In front of a raucous student section, IU defeated New Hampshire 3-0 (25-20, 25-18, 25-12), winning a third-consecutive season opener under head coach Steve Aird. The Hoosiers featured a balance attack offensively with six players providing four-or-more kills including a game-high 10 kills from junior outside hitter Mady Saris. Graduate student middle blocker Kaley Rammelsberg was errorless across 15 attempts, providing eight kills and an additional three blocks in the victory. IU aced New Hampshire 14 times across three sets, breaking a program record for team aces in a match under the current 25-point rally-scoring system (played since 2008). Three players made their IU debuts including Gary, sophomore opposite hitter Avry Tatum and redshirt freshman setter Natalia Hagopian.

Senior outside hitter Morgan Geddes produced one of the best offensive outputs in the past 15 years enroute to a Saturday morning sweep of Southern Indiana. IU, less than 15 hours removed from a win over New Hampshire, held the Screaming Eagles to just .053 hitting as a team in a straight-set sweep (25-16, 25-14, 25-18). Geddes, the Grove City, Ohio native went errorless in the match, providing 12 kills on 14 swings, an offensive clip of .857 in a morning where the Hoosiers hit .324 (44-11-102) as a team. Over the past 15 years, since the 25-point rally era was implemented in 2008, only two Hoosiers have hit better in a single match while producing at least 12 kills. Samantha Thrower (15-0-15) hit perfect in a match against Buffalo in 2011 while All-American Ashley Benson hit .889 (17-1-18) in a match against Niagra in 2010. Junior Outside Hitter Mady Saris led the way for IU with 14 kills and three digs while Junior Setter Camryn Haworth produced her first double-double of the season with 33 assists and 10 digs. In her collegiate debut, freshman middle blocker Ava Vickers recorded seven blocks.

The Indiana Volleyball team jumped out to a 17-1 lead in the opening set of Saturday night’s match against Radford, never looking back in a dominant straight sets victory (25-5, 25-15, 25-14) to close out the Indiana Invitational. IU conceded just five points and only one kill to Radford in the opening set (25-5), the fewest ever allowed to an opponent in program under the current scoring format (since 2008). The Hoosiers scored 17 of the first 18 points of the match which included a run of three-straight kills from sophomore opposite hitter Avry Tatum. As a team, IU hit .500 on the evening, matching the program record for single game hitting percentage in the rally era. All-time, the .500 clip is tied for third in a single game in program history. The Hoosiers converted on 42 of 70 swings with just seven errors. Radford hit just .029 on the evening (17-15-69) and were held to just -.269 (1-8-26) hitting in the dominant opening set for the Hoosiers.

Redshirt senior Sydney Keld found the back of the cage on the stroke, but it was negated due an official ruling of Keld dragging the ball. Indiana had a chance to tie in the 59th minute with Charley shooting a strong shot, but Duke’s Piper Hampsch made the save.

Indiana Field Hockey lost at No. 14 Liberty, 2-1, in overtime on Sunday morning in the team’s second game of the season. The Hoosiers and Flames battled the whole game. Each team scored within 50 seconds of one another in the third period to make it a 1-1 game. From there, both defenses fended off any attack through the rest of regulation. In the first minute of overtime, Liberty drew a penalty and the Flames’ Reagan Underwood converted on a penalty stroke goal to win the game. The loss drops Indiana’s record to 0-2 on the year. From the 5:27 to the 5:51 mark of the first period, Indiana took three shots, but none were converted. Freshman Maddie Olshemski took two and redshirt senior Sydney Keld had one. In the 24th minute, Indiana junior goalkeeper Arabella Loveridge made back-to-back saves to keep the game scoreless. Liberty’s Milagros Arteta opened the scoring right out of the halftime break with a goal at 31:14 to put Liberty ahead 1-0. Less than a minute later, Indiana tied it up at 1-1. Liberty’s Reagan Underwood scores on the stroke to win the game, 2-1.  Indiana will be back in action next weekend for two games in Oxford, Ohio. On Sunday the Hoosiers will face Saint Francis (PA) in neutral site action, and on Monday Indiana will take on Miami (OH).
