The Indiana Hoosiers open their 139th season Football Saturday Afternoon at Memorial Stadium when the #3 Ohio State Buckeyes pay a visit for a 3:30pm matchup and the game will be televised on CBS. Indiana will face a ranked opponent for the third time in four years and the second time that has occurred at Memorial Stadium for a season opener.  This is year number seven for Indiana Head Coach Tom Allen who is 30-40 overall and 17-35 in Big Ten matchups.  This will be the fourth time in his seven seasons that he has faced a Big Ten Opponent and the third season in a row. The Hoosiers lost to Ohio State in 2017 and Iowa in 2021 and beat Illinois last year at home.

Indiana is 13-1 in home openers since 2002 with the only loss coming in 2017 to Ohio State on a Thursday Night. This will be the sixth time that these two teams have met in the season opener with the Buckeyes winning all five previous matchups. The first four came in Columbus in 1938, 1952, 1953 and 1954.  This will be the 97th all time meeting and 32nd in Bloomington dating back to when the series began in 1901. Ohio State dominates the series leading 79-12-5 and are 28-2-1 all time in Bloomington. Indiana will be looking to snap a 28-game losing streak to the Buckeyes that dates back to 1991.  The teams played to a 27-27 tie in 1990 at Memorial Stadium.  Ohio State made their first trip to Bloomington in 1914 and the Buckeye faithful travels in full force for this game.

Indiana last beat Ohio State 41-7 in 1988 at Memorial Stadium which has been referred to by Ohio State Fans as “The darkest day”. The Hoosiers last won in Columbus in 1987 31-10 which was the only season the Hoosiers have beaten both Ohio State and Michigan in the same season.  Indiana has only beaten Ohio State one other time in Bloomington and that was in 1904 with an 8-0 win. Indiana won five out of the first six meetings in the series with wins in 1901, 1903, 1905 and 1913. The teams played to a tie in 1902, 1929, 1932 and 1959. Indiana won in Columbus in 1901, 1905, 1913, 1924, 1937, 1943, 1947 and 1951 with the 1903 matchup held in Champaign Illinois.

Indiana finished 4-8 a season ago and 2-7 in the Big Ten East. The Hoosiers have revamped their roster brining in 24 transfer and a total of 32 scholarship newcomers. Indiana returns just two everyday starters on defense and will have a new signal caller on offense.  Connor Baezlak and Jack Tuttle transferred out, Dexter Williams II tore is ACL and is not 100% yet for this season and Donaven McCulley who completed one pass a season ago has been moved to Wide Receiver. The starter for this season has not been named and will come down to Brendan Sorsby who was 3-6 passing for 8 yards and interception a season ago and Tayven Jackson who is a transfer from Tennessee and the younger brother of former IU Men’s Basketball player Trayce Jackson-Davis. Jackson is the 2021 Indiana Mr. Football winner from Center Grove HS. He played in Three games at Tennessee in 2022 and completed three passes for 37 yards and rushed three times for 10 yards and a touchdown.

Ohio State started 11-0 last year before losing at home to Michigan 45-23 and the College Football Playoff Semifinal at the Peach Bowl to Georgia 42-41. IU is ranked as high as No. 3 (TDS, CSN) and the Huskies come in rated as well as No. 9 (TDS). IU head coach Todd Yeagley and Washington’s Jamie Clark are two of four active Division-I men’s soccer head coaches with at least 175 wins since 2010 – Yeagley’s first season leading the Hoosiers. Yeagley’s 179 wins are tied for the most in that span, and no coach has led his program to more NCAA College Cups (5) since 2010. The Hoosiers are coming off a 2-0 win over DePaul in which they outshot the Blue Demons 31-1. Freshman forward Collins Oduro scored for a second straight match before senior midfielder Quinten Helmer sealed it with IU’s second goal. Indiana owns a 355-70-52 record all-time at “The Bill.” The Hoosiers have shut out opponents in each of their last four home matches going back to the 2022 NCAA Tournament. IU earned an 8-4-1 record against ranked opponents in its 2022 national runner-up season. Washington is Indiana’s first ranked test of the 2023 campaign.

Washington is 1-1-0. The Huskies defeated South Florida 2-0 on opening day before falling to San Diego by the same score on Sunday. The Huskies are led by 16th-year head coach Jamie Clark, who has compiled a 162-55-25 record at Washington. Washington returned 27 players from its 2022 team, including All-Pac-12 selections Nate Jones, Kalani Kossa-Rienzi, Chris Meyers, Imanol Rosales and Christian Soto. Indiana had previously eliminated Washington from the tournament three times; in 1992, in 1999 on the way to NCAA title No. 5 and in 2000. Tonight’s matchup marks just the second time the teams have met in the regular season. It last happened in 2001, a 1-0 win for the Hoosiers that was played in Portland, Oregon. Indiana Head Coach Todd Yeagley participated in the first-ever matchup. IU defeated Washington 2-0 in the NCAA Tournament Second Round.

Indiana University Women’s Basketball announces home and home series with Stanford
Coach Teri Moren and the Indiana Hoosiers are never one to shy away from a challenge. On Thursday, the team announced a home-and-home series with perennial powerhouse Stanford, led by the all-time winningest coach in the history of women’s college basketball, Tara VanDerveer.  VanDerveer is herself a former Hoosier, playing for the Indiana women’s basketball team from 1972-75 under coach Bea Gorton.

The first matchup will take place in Palo Alto this season on Nov. 12, as Moren and the Hoosiers visit the Cardinal in an early season clash between two national title contenders.  VanDerveer and Stanford will return the favor in the 2024-25 season when they fly to Bloomington and play at Assembly Hall.  Indiana already had an early season bout against a top tier women’s basketball team scheduled for 2023-24, as the Hoosiers will take on the Tennessee Volunteers in the Fort Myers Tip-Off on Thanksgiving Day. This is just another feather in their cap for what has grown into an impressive non-conference schedule for the upcoming season.

IU was ranked No. 5 overall in the country by ESPN’s Charlie Creme in his “Way-Too-Early Top 25” for the 2023-24 women’s college basketball season. Stanford is ranked No. 9 overall, and Tennessee clocked in at No. 11.  Despite Moren’s Hoosiers being ranked ahead of the Cardinal, hardly anyone has had as much success as VanDerveer has in Palo Alto during her coaching tenure. She’s coached every Stanford women’s basketball team since the 1985, except for the 1995-96 Cardinal. That year, VanDerveer was busy coaching the USA Basketball National Team to a 52-0 exhibition record, and a subsequent 8-0 record and gold medal at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. VanDerveer has also won three championships at Stanford, in 1989, 1992 and 2021.

On the court, Indiana and Stanford have only ever faced each other three times, with Stanford leading the all-time series 2-1. The last meeting took place in November of the 2021-22 season in the Baha Mar Hoops Nassau Championship in the Bahamas. Stanford emerged with a narrow 69-66 victory in that game behind 21 points from Cameron Brink. The only current Indiana players to have played in that matchup from ’21 are Mackenzie Holmes and Chloe Moore-McNeil. Stanford also beat Indiana back in the 2001-02 season, with the game taking place in Palo Alto. Indiana’s lone victory over Stanford in the series’ history took place in Chapel Hill, when IU beat Stanford in the 1979 North Carolina Christmas Classic by a score of 73-63.  The two teams have never played at Assembly Hall, making Stanford’s scheduled trip to Bloomington in 2024 even more anticipated than it already will be.

Eight Former Indiana University Football players make NFL Opening Day Rosters
The deadline for NFL teams to finalize their 53-man rosters for the 2023 season was on Tuesday, Aug. 29, at 4 p.m. ET.  While Indiana is not the most prominent football factory in the country, there are still a number of Hoosiers who made the cut and will be playing on the sport’s biggest stage this next year. Unfortunately, there were also plenty of former Indiana football players who were released from their respective teams this week, many of whom were undrafted free agents signed fresh out of IU following the 2022 season.

Here’s a look at where each former Indiana football player has ended up following the NFL’s 53-man roster cuts for the 2023 season:

  • Active Roster- Cam Jones, LB — Kansas City Chiefs, Micah McFadden, LB — New York Giants, Dan Feeney, OL — Chicago Bears, Caleb Jones, OL — Green Bay Packers, Raheem Layne, SAF — Los Angeles Chargers, Peyton Hendershot, TE — Dallas Cowboys, Ian Thomas, TE — Carolina Panthers and Nick Westbrook-Ikhine, WR — Tennessee Titans.
  • Injured Reserve- Nate Sudfeld, QB — Detroit Lions (Sudfeld tore his ACL during a preseason game and is not on the Lions’ 53-man roster but has been placed on the team’s Injured Reserve list).  Waived/Not on an NFL Roster- Stevie Scott III, RB — Waived by Arizona Cardinals, Ty Fryfogle, WR — Waived by Kansas City Chiefs, Jaylin Williams, CB — Waived by Minnesota Vikings, Tiawan Mullen, CB — Waived by Los Angeles Chargers, Luke Haggard, OL — Waived by Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Ryder Anderson, DL — Waived by New York Giants and Demarcus Elliott, DT — Signed as UDFA with Chiefs, No longer on the Team. However, of that group, several have been signed to NFL practice squads, despite not making a team’s 53-man roster.

Here are former Indiana football players that have been reportedly signed to practice squads following the Tuesday deadline: Tiawan Mullen — Philadelphia Eagles practice squad, Jaylin Williams — Minnesota Vikings practice squad, Luke Haggard — Tampa Bay Buccaneers practice squad, Ryder Anderson — New York Giants practice squad and Marcelino McCray-Ball—New York Jets Practice Squad. The big news is that former first team All-American Tiawan Mullen was signed by the Philadelphia Eagles as a practice squad player.  While Williams, Haggard and Anderson are simply staying put in the cities where they just barely missed out on making the 53-man cut, Mullen is traveling across the country to join the practice squad of the defending NFC champions. Philadelphia does have a deep cornerback room already, having kept seven players at the position on its 53-man roster. It would likely take an injury, trade or significant decline in play from one of Darius Slay, James Bradberry, Avonte Maddox, Kelee Ringo, Josh Jobe, Eli Ricks or Mario Goodrich for Mullen to see the field for the Eagles in 2023. But stranger things of happened, and after getting waived by the Chargers on Tuesday, it’s great to see that the former Indiana cornerback still has a home in the NFL for the time being.
