Indiana University Football shines on Friday Night with 41-7 win over Indiana State
The Indiana Hoosiers Football Team shined Friday Night at Memorial Stadium with a 41-7 domination of the Indiana State Sycamores in just the sixth Friday game in program history and second one at home after a win over Illinois to open the 2022 season. The Hoosiers are 7-0 all time against Indiana State and 17-1 all-time against FCS Opponents with their only loss coming against Southern Illinois in 2006 when the Salukis beat the Hoosiers 35-28 in Memorial Stadium. Indiana is 1-1 on the season while Indiana State falls to 0-2.  The Hoosiers will face Louisville Saturday at Noon at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. 

The Hoosiers racked up 559 yards of total offense with 344 of those in the air and 214 on the ground with five rushing touchdowns in 79 offensive plays. Tayven Jackson who started at quarterback finished 18-21 for 236 yards while Brendan Sorsby was 9-16 for 108 yards as neither threw an interception or a touchdown pass. In 2 games this season the quarterbacks have yet to throw an Interception or a touchdown. Jaylin Lucas had 10 carries for 88 yards and 2 touchdowns, Josh Henderson had 12 carries for 60 yards and a touchdown. Christian Turner and Tayven Jackson added rushing touchdowns. Lawrence North graduates and HS teammates Omar Cooper and Donaven McCulley led the Hoosiers receiving core.  Copper had 7 catches for 101 yards and McCulley 4 catches for 58 yards. Henderson had 3 catches for 55 yards and Lucas had 4 catches for 39 yards.  Indiana had 33 first downs, 12-16 on Third down conversions and never went for it on fourth down. The Hoosiers committed 7 penalties for 60 yards.

Indiana State struggled with 93 yards of total offense on 43 plays. Starting Quarterback Evan Olaes was 3-9 passing for 21 yards and 1 interception while Gavin Screws was 0-2 passing. Korbin Allen had 5 carries for 24 yards, Oales had 12 carries for 17 yards. Dakota Caton caught 2 passes for 6 yards and Harry Van Dyne caught 1 pass for 15 yards. Bloomington South Graduate Maddix Blackwell had 9 total tackles six of those solo to lead the Sycamore defense plus a fumble recovery for a touchdown. Indiana State had 8 first downs, 2-11 on third down conversions and 0-1 on fourth down conversions. The Sycamores committed 8 penalties for 65 yards.  

The Hoosiers scored on their first three possessions of the game to take a 21-0 lead while Indiana State punted on their first four possessions. Jaylin Lucas scored on a 25-yard touchdown run with 12:04 left in the first quarter and then with 8:52 left in the first quarter he did a repeat with his second 25-yard touchdown run. Tayven Jackson had a 10-yard touchdown run with 2:04 left in the first quarter. Indiana State Quarterback Evan Olaes was picked off in the end zone by Nick Toomer as the Hoosiers get their second takeaway of the season.  The Hoosiers were driving when Jaylin Lucas fumbled the ball at the Indiana State 25-yard line and Bloomington South Graduate Maddix Blackwell picked it up and ran it back 75 yards for a Sycamore Touchdown with 2 minutes left before halftime to make it 21-7. Chris Freeman hit 28-yard field goal with 1:28 left to make it 24-7 going into the locker room.  Indiana State to a knee on the last play of the half. The Hoosiers had 340 total yards of offense with 224 passing and 116 rushing. Indiana State had 83 total yards with 64 rushing and 19 passing.

In the second half both teams punted on their first possession. The Hoosiers a 13 play 93-yard drive that lasted six minutes and three seconds and ended with 1-yard Christian Turner touchdown run to put the Hoosiers up 31-7 with 1:39 left in the third quarter.  The Hoosiers had 444 of total offense to just 92 for the sycamores going into the fourth quarter.  The Hoosiers scored with 10:50 left in the game on a three-yard touchdown run by Josh Henderson.  Nicolas Radcic added a 21-yard field goal with 2:43 left as the Hoosiers scored on 7 of the 11 possessions they had on offense.  Third string quarterback Broc Lowry came into run the last play which was negative 1 yard loss on a run by David Holloman.  The Hoosiers had 3 sacks with Andre Carter, Lanell Carr and Marcus Burris Jr getting to the quarterback. Nick Toomer had an interception.  Phillip Dunnam who had the interception last week against Ohio State had 8 tackles and 7 of those solo and Aaron Casey had 7 total tackles and 4 of those solo.

Bloomington North Wins the city battle in Overtime while Owen Valley routs Edgewood in HS Football
Week 4 of the High School Football season is for the rivalries as the Number 5 Team in Class 5A the Bloomington North Cougars beat the number 2 team in Class 5A the Bloomington South Panthers 25-24 in overtime and Owen Valley beat Edgewood 40-6 Friday Night. The Cougars are 4-0 for the first time in school history while the Panthers are 3-1. Owen Valley improves to 2-2 and Edgewood falls to 1-3 on the season.  Week 5 will see Bloomington North hosting Terre Haute North, Bloomington South on the road at Terre Haute South and Edgewood hosting South Putnam.

Bloomington North snaps a five-game losing skid in the series and beats their crosstown rivals for the first time since 2019 when the Cougars won 38-27. Bloomington South leads the all-time series 48-15 dating back to 1972. Bloomington South’s Bryce Taylor hit a 30-yard field goal with 1:16 to go in regulation to tie the game at 17-17. The Panthers got the ball first in the extra period when Lucas Waldon scored on a reverse from 10 yards out to make it 24-17. Bloomington North got its turn and capitalized when Dash King found Cole Grupenhoff in the endzone to make it 24-23. The Cougars went for the win as King found Jack Leonard in the end zone for the two-point conversion and Cougars beat the Panthers on their home field.  This was just the third overtime game all time in the series. Bloomington North won 10-7 in 1977 and Bloomington South won 44-37 in 2020.

Bloomington North Quarterback Dash King was 19-30 passing for 196 yards with 3 touchdowns and 2 interceptions along with 40 yards rushing. Cole Grupenhoff had 7 catches for 77 yards and a touchdown, Jorian Brooks 5 catches for 73 yards and a touchdown and Tate Bless had 4 catches for 17 and a touchdown. The Cougars had 11 first downs and 264 yards of total offense with 68 yards on the ground. Noah Nelson added a 33-yard field goal with 4:28 left in regulation.  

Bloomington South Quarterback Jarrin Alley was 16-27 for 196 yards passing with 2 interceptions and no touchdowns. Gavin Adams had 99 rushing on 25 carries and 2 touchdowns along with 3 catches for 34 yards. Lucas Waldon had 2 carries for 25 yards and a touchdown along with 3 catches for 37 yards receiving. D’Andre Black had 2 catches for 47 yards and Drew Crum-Heifje had 2 catches for 65 yards. The Panthers had 260 yards of total offense. 38 carries for 74 yards as there were three bad snaps that cost the Panthers 63 yards. Bloomington South had 11 first downs and 7 penalties for 70 yards.    

Owen Valley beat Edgewood 40-6 in Spencer. The Patriots have won three in a row in the series and keep the black and blue trophy for another year. Owen Valley leads the trophy series 16-13 as Edgewood leads the overall series 32-20 dating back to 1972. Owen Valley led 14-6 midway through the third quarter before breaking it open with three quick touchdowns by Elijah Anderson and two by Kyvan Bandy.  

Indiana University Women’s Soccer Celebrates Senior Day with Blowout win of Hanover
The Indiana University Women’s Soccer Team celebrated Senior Day on Sunday afternoon with 6-0 win over Division Three Hanover College from Hanover Indiana which is down on the Ohio River just west of Madison Indiana.  “Give all the credit and respect to Hanover coming in and playing us” Indiana Head Coach Erwin van Bennekom said after the match. Before the game the Hoosiers honored Zoe Tiger, Anna Bennett, Sofia Black and Paige Webber were presented with framed Indiana University Soccer Jersey’s on the field along with being escorted by their families and Indiana head coach Erwin van Bennekom presented a bouquet of flowers to the mothers of the Seniors.  “This program has meant everything to me” Graduate Student Paige Webber said after the match. “I transferred in and this is home now and I am happy to have all my teammates and coaches support” Webber Said.

The First meeting between the two teams was a dominating performance by the Hoosiers as they had 25 shots and 9 shots on goal in the first half.  Hanover did not have a shot in the first half and Hanover Goalkeeper Maggie Hinegardner made 6 saves while Jamie Gerstenberg did not make a save in goal and was taken out at halftime replaced by Freshman Parker Scheele from St Louis Missouri getting her first action between the pipes between the Hoosiers.  The Panthers committed 6 fouls while the Hoosiers committed three. IU had ten corner kicks in the first half and the Panthers did not have a corner kick as the Hoosiers were called for offsides once.

Paige Webber scored school record with four goals for the Hoosiers breaking the record for most goals in a single game. Webber gets a hat trick for the second time in a Hoosier uniform she had one against Murray State September 9, 2022, and was the eighth player in Hoosier History to accomplish that feat and just the second to do it twice joining Lisa Nouanesengy who had a hat trick in three different seasons from 2011-2013. Webber has scored 9 goals on the season and 15 in her Hoosier Career.  Webber’s goals came at the 15:58, 20:34, 50:08 and broke the record at the 57:25 mark.  “I did not know that I broke the school record but its great to do it on senior day and in front of my family”. Webber said after the match. Ava Akeel celebrated her birthday with her first goal of the season at the 40:06 mark and her 4th goal of her career after going three in the 2022 season. “That’s great she got one today, she works so hard and so far, the season has gone as she would like too but I am happy for her” van Bennekom said. Sarah Sirdah scored her first goal of the season at 64:50 mark

Anna Bennett had 2 assists, Elle Britt, Paige Droner, Kennedy Neighbors, Abby Iler and Marisa Grzesiak all had an assist. Indiana ended the game with 43 shots and 17 shots on goal. The Hoosiers committed 8 fouls and 20 corner kicks and were called for offsides once. Indiana used a total 22 players with 20 field players and 2 goalkeepers as Parker Scheele made one save and gets a combined shutout with Gerstenberg. No Player played more that 64 minutes in the match.  The Hoosiers set a program record for Corner kicks and surpassing the old mark of 18 against New Hampshire set on September 3, 2000. The Hoosiers had 7 assists which ties the mark against IUPUI on September 6, 1998. Indiana fell one shot short of tying the shots record of 44 against Bowling Green on September 12, 1997.

Hanover who came into the match 2-0-1 had two shots for the entire match which game from Junior Beth Cook at the 48:40 mark was blocked and Nora Jordan at the 88:05 mark was saved by Indiana Goalkeeper Parker Scheele. The Panthers made 11 saves between four goalkeepers. The Panthers committed 7 fouls, did not have a corner kick and were called for offsides one time. Starting Goalkeeper Maggie Heingardner had 8 saves and gave up the first four goals in 58 minutes and 24 seconds. Emma Patterson came in and made 2 saves along with giving up 2 goals in 13 minutes and 1 second of action. Sabrina Henderson made one save in 15 minutes in 5 seconds and Payton Kenney finished it off in the final five minutes and five section and did not make a save.

The Hoosiers finish off the non-conference season with 5-0-2 record and will open up Big Ten play at home against the Rutgers Scarlet Knights Sunday afternoon at 1 pm.  The Hoosiers are feeling very good about where they stand heading in the Big Ten Conference Season. “We only won one Big Ten game last year” Webber said. “We finished 13th a season ago and we have a lot of work to do but we are playing with more confidence and as we go through the conference we will see where we stand” Webber Said.

Indiana University Volleyball wins the Stacheville Challenge Tournament
The Indiana University Volleyball team took down Valparaiso, Lindenwood and Austin Peay all 3-0 scores to win the Stacheville Challenge Tournament in Clarksville Tennessee Friday and Saturday. The Hoosiers are 6-3 on the season and will play in the 305 Challenge Tournament Friday and Saturday in Miami Florida.

Trailing for just one point in the entire match, The Hoosiers swept the Beacons in just under an hour-and-a-half winning 25-16, 25-15, 25-15 in the Winfield Dunn Center on the campus of Austin Peay. Junior outside hitter Mady Saris had her best game of the season, terminating 13 kills on 27 swings with just two errors (.407 hitting percentage). The Hoosiers hit .316 as a team with five players providing at least five kills. Junior setter Camryn Haworth was one dig short of a double-double, finishing with 29 assists and nine digs. Graduate student middle blocker Kaley Rammelsberg finished with six blocks to lead IU to 13 total team blocks. The Hoosiers held Valparaiso to .000 hitting (22-22-102) on the afternoon, the first time an IU opponent has failed hit to hit in the positive since Sam Houston State hit -.033 on September 2nd, 2022.

Graduate student middle blocker Kaley Rammelsberg had a hand in all nine team blocks for the Hoosiers in a straight sets sweep of Lindenwood (25-21, 25-17, 25-11). The Westerville, Ohio native produced two solo blocks and seven block assists, setting an IU career best with nine rejections against Lindenwood. She previously had matches with nine and 11 blocks while at High Point. Her nine stuffs in three sets are tied for the second most in the rally era at IU, a mark that has been met on six previous occasions. Ashley Benson (2010) has the three-set rally era record for blocks in a single match with 10. Junior outside hitter Mady Saris produced a team-high 12 kills, giving her 25 on the day while junior setter Camryn Haworth recorded 28 assists and nine digs in the victory.

The Hoosiers completed a perfect weekend at the Stacheville Challenge on the campus of Austin Peay, winning all nine sets the program played across two days. The Hoosiers took out a pesky Austin Peay team in straight sets, winning 25-13, 25-19, 25-18 behind 10 team service aces and nine team blocks. IU jumps out to its best nine-game start to a season (6-3) since beginning the 2019 campaign at 7-2. In six victories this year, the Hoosiers have won all in three sets and have been swept only once (vs. (RV) Washington). Graduate student middle blocker Kaley Rammelsberg capped off her impressive weekend with 10 blocks on 14 swings with zero errors (.714) and eight blocks. On the weekend she blocked 23 shots enroute to earning Tournament MVP honors at the Stacheville Challenge. Juniors Mady Saris and Camryn Haworth were the other IU representatives named to the All-Tournament team with a productive three-match weekend.

South Florida knocks off #7 Indiana University Men’s Soccer
No. 7-ranked Indiana men’s soccer (2-2-1) fell at South Florida on Friday a 1-0 road result. Despite 10 shots, Indiana just couldn’t find the back of the net. The Hoosiers held firm defensively after USF’s 27th-minute score with the help of a career-high seven-save effort from JT Harms, as IU has yet to allow multiple goals in any of its five matches this season. In the 27th minute Senior midfielder Ajmeer Spengler played graduate student strike Jalen Anderson through, and the fifth-year player finished around Harms. Indiana appealed for offside, but the flag stayed down. In the 48th minute Junior forward Tommy Mihalic had IU’s first great chances moments out of the break after a great bit of play on the left wing. Mihalic’s right-footed shot from 19 yards out teased but trickled just outside of the near post. In the 78th Minute Indiana’s best chance came in the 78th minute as sophomore forward Luka Bezerra used his skill to twist in on goal, but he couldn’t curl his shot past the keeper.

Indiana fell to 4-2-1 against USF all-time. Freshman Joel Demian made his Indiana debut, playing 50 minutes after coming on late in the first half. Senior goalkeeper JT Harms made a career-high seven saves. Indiana has a week to prepare for the start of Big Ten play as it welcomes Wisconsin to Jerry Yeagley Field at Bill Armstrong Stadium Friday. Kickoff is set for 7:30pm and will be streamed on Big Ten Network Plus.

Indiana Fever fall in last road game of the 2023 season to the Connecticut Sun
The Indiana Fever (12-27) fell to the Connecticut Sun, 76-59, on Friday night at Mohegan Sun Arena after recording its season-low offensive output. Indiana was led by Kelsey Mitchell’s 15 points on 5-of-12 shooting from the floor. Mitchell dished out two assists, recorded two steals and netted her 500th career made free throw. NaLyssa Smith and Erica Wheeler followed behind with 14 points each. Smith pulled down six rebounds and recorded two blocks, while Wheeler added five rebounds, three assists and three steals. Aliyah Boston contributed seven points and seven rebounds. Former Indiana University Star Grace Berger scored 2 points in 16 minutes. Berger was 1-3 from the field and 0-1 from three-point range with an assist and 2 turnovers. In addition, the Fever tied a season-high 10 steals on the night.

The Fever were held to 28.6 percent (4-of-14) shooting in the first quarter. Sun forward Rebecca Allen and guard Natisha Hiedeman combined to shoot 5-of-6 from beyond the arc in the first frame, allowing Connecticut to take a 26-10 lead at the conclusion of the quarter. After the Sun took a 21-point lead roughly two minutes into the second quarter, Indiana began an eventual 21-6 scoring run that cut the deficit to four points on one occasion. Indiana was able to outscore the Sun, 21-11, in the frame by holding Connecticut to just 4-of-16 shooting from the floor and 1-of-6 (16.7 percent) shooting from beyond the arc. Led by Wheeler’s seven points on 3-of-5 shooting and Mitchell’s six points on a perfect 2-of-2 shooting clip, the Fever trailed by only six points at halftime, 37-31.

Indiana shot a combined 9-of-30 (30 percent) from the floor in the second half while Connecticut went 16-of-27 (59.3 percent) from the court to take as much as a 17-point lead on one occasion in the fourth quarter. Mitchell added eight points in the second half, while Smith contributed seven points in the half. The Sun ended the game on a 24-9 scoring run to solidify the win. For the Sun, Connecticut’s five players who added double-figure scoring in the wire-to-wire win were led by Tiffany Hayes’ 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the floor. DeWanna Bonner, Hiedeman, and Alyssa Thomas added 10 points each. Thomas neared another triple double as she also recorded 14 rebounds and eight assists, while Bonner pulled down eight rebounds and dished out five assists. The Connecticut reserves outscored the Indiana reserves, 24-9, highlighted by DiJonai Carrington’s 10 points and six rebounds.
