Maryland goes to 5-0 for the first time since 2001 with a 44-17 blowout win over Indiana University Football
The Maryland Terrapins are 5-0 for the first time since 2001 after a 44-17 win over the Indiana Hoosiers Saturday afternoon at SECU Stadium in College Park, Maryland.  Maryland will travel to Ohio State next week while the Hoosiers have the week off before traveling to Michigan the following Saturday. Indiana is 2-3 on the season and after a four-overtime win against Akron last week many wondered if we were going to see a better performance this week and the answer was no. Questions have been asked about the play calling and not being able to convert on fourth downs down near the goal line. After this game more questions will be asked but also about the defense giving up big plays early and often.

Maryland threw a 62-yard pass from Taulia Tagovaiola to Jeshawn Jones on the games first play from scrimmage. 2 plays later Tai Felton caught a 13-yard pass from Tagovaiola to make it 7-0 just 25 seconds into the game.   Indiana scored with 9:54 left in the first quarter on a 25-yard field goal from Chris Freeman to make 7-3. Maryland would score two more times to make it 21-3 after the first quarter. Tagovaiola threw his second touchdown pass of the game to Felton for 29 yards and then the quarterback ran it in from 19 yards out.  In the Second Quarter Tagovaiola would hook up with Felton for the third time on a 9-yard touchdown pass but the Terps missed the extra point to make it 27-3 going into the locker room.

In the third quarter the Hoosiers decided to go for a fake punt on a 4 and 9 at their own 24-yard line as third string quarterback Broc Lowry hooked up with Omar Cooper Jr for an 8-yard pass and Maryland got the ball at the Indiana 32-yard line. Maryland would kick a 44-yard field goal from James Howes to make it 30-3 with 11:28 left in the third quarter. Maryland would score on 3-yard pass from Tagovialoa to Dylan Wade for his only catch of the game to make it 37-3 with 7:08 left in the third quarter.

Indiana would score twice in the fourth quarter as Brendan Sorsby came in and threw touchdown passes. Sorsby hooked up with Donaven McCulley on a 11-yard score with 11:07 left and then found Andison Coby on a 16-yard pass with 25 seconds left in the game. Maryland added a fifth touchdown pass with 6:54 as Kaden Prather caught a 14-yard pass from Tagoviaola. The younger brother of Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovialoa finished the game 24-34 passing for 352 yards and career high 5 touchdowns and 3 times for 15 yards and a touchdown.  In his career against the Hoosiers, he has thrown for 1,282 yards, 10 touchdowns and 3 interceptions with a 3-1 record against Indiana. Maryland had 23 carries for 120 yards and finished the game with 472 total yards.

Tayven Jackson was 17-29 for 113 yards passing with an interception. Brendan Sorsby was 7-11 for 84 yards and 2 touchdowns and Broc Lowry was 1-1 for 8 yards. Christian Turner led the Indiana running game with 61 yards on 15 carries as the Hoosiers ran the ball 37 times for 116 yards. Donaven McCulley led the Hoosier receivers with 6 catches for 79 yards. Maryland got pressure to the Indiana quarterback as they brought down Jackson three times.  Indiana did not record a sack on Tagovailoa and he had control of the game and his offense all afternoon long.  Maryland has won the last three meetings as Indiana leads the all-time series 7-5.

Indiana has a rough schedule ahead with road trips to Michigan and Penn State and home game to a Rutgers team that it has struggled with over the years as we hit October.  Indiana will host Wisconsin and Michigan State in November and travel to Illinois and Purdue.  This week Indiana will have 2 weeks to prepare to play Michigan and recover from this stretch of games.

Carmel wins the IHSAA Girls Golf State Championship on Its Home Course
Carmel claimed its second-straight IHSAA Girls Golf state championship at Prairie View Golf Club in Carmel on Saturday. The Greyhounds finished with a 608 score, nine shots better than runner-up Westfield. Homestead (622) and Noblesville (635) rounded out the top four. For Carmel, the title is the fourth in program history, winning previously in 2013 and 1980. The 608 score is also the fifth best in state finals history. Don’t bother telling Carmel its players and coaches, that is what the scores are while they’re on the course. Coach Kelly Kluesner’s team is simply going to push ahead. So, a one-shot deficit after round one and still facing that same deficit heading to the back nine in round two proved no matter.

Westfield had a one-shot lead (306-307) after the first round, but Carmel served notice immediately in round two by surging to a three-shot lead after three holes. The Shamrocks, however, recovered and headed to the back nine with that one-shot lead. From there, however, Carmel dominated. Led by seniors Michaela Headlee (146), Claire Swathwood (149) and Kamryn Williams (156), the Greyhounds came in with a 6-over, 150, while Westfield shot a 10-over, 160. Sophie Mock rounded out the Carmel score with a 157.

Part of the reason Westfield won’t go home with any heartache is because of the performances of senior Samantha Brown and junior Addi Kooi. Brown claimed the individual title by shooting a 2-over, 142, while Kooi tied Headlee and two others for second at 146. Brown finished the 36 holes with four birdies and 30 pars – shooting only two bogeys during the entire tournament. Her first bogey came on the 11th hole in round two. Also tying for second were Castle’s Ashley Kirkland and Batesville sophomore Ava South. Swathwood and Floyd Central’s Paige Giovenco each finished at 5-over, followed by Culver Academy’s Lynne Zhang and Homestead’s Scarlett Senk, each at 6-over. Brown won the Mental Attitude Award and will play for the Purdue Boilermakers next year.

Indiana University Women’s Soccer drops its first game of the season at Ohio State
No. 16/17 Indiana dropped their first game of the season after battling Ohio State to a 2-1 decision at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium Thursday evening. Indiana (9-1-2, 3-1 B1G) saw their first chance to get on the board early with a shot by junior defender Lauren Costello in the seventh minute. Her attempt was high as it hit off the corner of the cross bar. The teams continued to battle it out before Ohio State (6-3-2, 2-1-1) struck first in the 22nd minute on a dangerous cross in the goalie box. In the 33rd minute, sophomore forward Marisa Grzesiak had an open look as she dribbled past two defenders, but the Buckeyes keeper would make the grab. Ohio State found the net again in the 37th minute to take a 2-0 lead. The Hoosiers had another chance in the 55th minute with a header off an Indiana corner kick from defender Piper Coffield, but the keeper tipped it out for the save.  Senior defender Zoe Tiger put the Hoosiers on the board in the 80th minute with a header off an Indiana corner kick from freshman midfielder Elle Britt. Zoe Tiger scored her first goal of the season and of her career.  Indiana outshot Ohio State 14-8 and led 9-3 in corners. Elle Britt tallied her third assist this season for her fifth point and Indiana Goalkeeper Jamie Gerstenberg made four bringing her season total to 31.
