Teenager arrested after passenger thrown from pickup bed
On 12/09/2023 at approximately 9:30 PM, Monroe County Sheriff Deputies were made aware that an individual, Colin Vasil, age 20, fell from the bed of a pickup truck, resulting in injury. Monroe County Central Emergency Dispatch originally received a phone call to the address of 200 N Daniels Way, Ivy Tech Community College, in reference to large trucks conducting donuts and creating excess noise.  In the same call, they received information that a subject had fell out of a truck.

Deputies responded, locating both the driver of the pickup truck and the injured party.  During the investigation it was reported that the driver, Joseph Mattes, age 18, began doing donuts in the parking lot when Colin climbed into the bed of the pickup.  It was determined that even though the vehicle was in motion, there was no collision, and it is believed that centripetal force is what caused him to be ejected from the rear of the pickup.

Consequently, Colin collided with the asphalt while losing consciousness and obtaining lacerations to his face.  Witnesses on scene were preparing to start CPR before he regained consciousness.

The driver, Joseph Mattes was remanded to the Monroe County Jail on the following charge: Criminal Recklessness as a Level 6 Felony.

Bloomington’s Trashion Refashion launches 2024 timeline
The 2024 Bloomington Trashion Refashion Runway Show is seeking design entries and models for its 15th annual show to be held Sunday, April 7th at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater.  This is the day BEFORE the total solar eclipse in Bloomington. Designs need to consist of at least 90% previously discarded materials diverted from the wastestream. Trashion designs are produced using waste materials other than items meant to be worn.  Past years’ shows included designs constructed from packing materials, video tape, venetian blinds, bottle and can caps, leather couches, and camping chairs. Refashion designs give new life to discarded garments such as graduation gowns, bridesmaid dresses and scarves that are transformed to be worn in different ways such as a dress made from neckties. Designs may include both Trashion and Refashion elements. Group submissions are encouraged! Some designers will need models for the show.  Those interested in modeling are invited to provide their information at https://forms.gle/yo4fP3ydvbPfy5Rm7.

Founded in 2010 by artist Jeanne Leimkuhler, the Trashion Refashion Runway Show is a fundraiser for The Center for Sustainable Living.  The show serves and supports self-proclaimed and professional artists and designers and seeks to change beliefs and behaviors about what role clothing plays in our lives.  A true grassroots event, Trashion celebrates inclusion and diversity in our community with models and designers of all ages and experience levels.

Important dates, instructions for submitting designs, and FAQs can be found at  https://www.bloomingtontrashion.org/. Designers will be notified of their entry status soon after the February 18, 2024 deadline.

This Week in Hoosier History

2014 – Author and cartoonist Norman Bridwell died at the age of 86.  Born in Kokomo, he became famous for his series of books about Clifford, the Big Red Dog. Bridwell put together a portfolio and attempted to get a job as a children’s book illustrator but was rejected by approximately fifteen publishing houses. While at Harper & Row, an editor offhandedly suggested he turn one of his drawings into a story. The drawing was of a young girl and a horse-sized bloodhound, and the story became Clifford the Big Red Dog. That book spawned over 40 best-selling Clifford books, three animated television series, merchandise, a live musical, and a live-action film. Clifford serves as the official mascot of Scholastic, the publisher of the series.
