Game Times Announced for Indiana Men’s Basketball Games in the Bahamas

Indiana University Men’s Basketball announced game times for their two exhibition games in Bahamas in August.  The Hoosiers will face BC Mega of Belgrade Serbia on Friday August 13th at 7:30 PM and Sunday August 15th at 1 PM in the Imperial Ballroom at Atlantis Paradise Island.  This will be the fourth trip the Hoosiers have taken overseas in school history. Indiana was 12-6 in 1985 when they played In Canada, Japan, China, Yugoslavia and Finland. The Hoosiers went to the Bahamas Labor Day weekend of 2007 and finished 3-0. In The Summer of 2014 the Hoosiers went to Montreal and Ottawa Canada and were 4-1. Mike Woodson is in his first season as head coach of his alma mater. Woodson played for the Hoosiers from 1976-1980 and 2,061 points and is in the IU Athletics Hall of Fame.

Indiana Men’s Soccer Great Armando Betancourt Passes Away at Age 63

Former Indiana University Men’s Soccer player Armando Betancourt passed away Wednesday at the age 63 in San Pedro Sula Honduras from COVID-19 complications according to multiple reports. Betancourt was a three time All American at Indiana University from 1979-1981 and scored 64 goals and 165 total points before turning pro after his junior season and ranks 3rd on the schools are time scoring list. He played for his native Honduras in the 1982 World Cup appearing in all three games and scoring five goals in nine appearances for his country from 1982-1985. He won the Hermann Trophy in 1981. Betancourt was inducted in the Indiana University Athletics Hall of Fame in 1992 and was named to the Soccer America’s all time century team in 2000. He played professionally from 1977-1988 in Honduras, Spain, France and the United States.    

Indiana University Athletes Continue Competition at Tokyo Olympics

One Current and Three Former Indiana University Athletes competed in the Toyko Olympics Wednesday. In Swimming Evansville Native Lilly King finished 5th in the semifinals of the Women’s 200-meter breaststroke with a time of 2:22.27. Rising Sophomore Tomer Frankel of Israel finished 21st in the Men’s 100-meter butterfly with a time of 51.99 and Vini Lanza of Brazil finished 24th with a time of 52.08 as neither will advance to the semifinals. Golfer Jorge Campillio is tied for 31st after the first round of the Men’s Golf event with a 1 under par 70 for his Native Spain.  16 Athletes in 5 Sports from 7 Countries with IU ties are competing in Japan.  

Deadline To Reserve Tickets for Monroe County Sports Hall of Fame Is Monday August 2nd

The Deadline to reserve tickets for this years Monroe County Sports Hall of Fame Banquet is Monday August 2nd. The Tickets are $ 50 per person and can be purchased on line at www.monroecountyshof.org. The Banquet is Friday August 6th at the Monroe Convention Center and will start with a meet and great open to the public at 5 pm. The reception will start at 6 in the main ballroom and that is for those who have purchased tickets for the event. Dinner will begin at 6:45 PM and followed by the award ceremonies at 7:30 PM.
