Indiana University Graduates Zach Apple and Blake Peroni Add More Gold in Tokyo

Indiana University Graduates Zach Apple and Blake Peroni won gold and set a World Record as United States in 4 x100 Meter Medley Relay at the Tokyo Olympics. Apple swam the final leg to win in 3:26.78 as the Americans have never lost in this event and Peroni swam the prelims and members of the relay team get a medal even if they don’t swim in the finals, both won a gold earlier this week in the 4 x100 freestyle relay.  Several current and former Hoosier Athletes were in action. Evansville Native Lilly King won Sliver in the Women’s 200-meter breaststroke with a time of 2:19.92 her training partner Annie Lazor won bronze with a time 2:20.84. King Added a sliver medal in the 4 X 100 medley relay with a time of 3:51:73 after swimming the prelims of the event. Shae (Fournier) La Roche scored a goal as Canada lost to the Netherlands 16-12 in the Final Pool Play Game. La Roche has started all 4 games and scored 5 goals as Canada ends pool play at 1-3 and will advance to the quarterfinals on Tuesday afternoon 2 pm local time to face the United States. Columbus Native and Rising Junior Michael Brinegar finished 15th in the Men’s 1500 Meter Freestyle Heats with a time of 15:04.67 Ali Kahalafalla of Egypt finished 24th overall in the Men’s 50 Meter Freestyle heats with a time of 22.22 and did not advance to the semifinals or finals. Golfer Jorge Campillo of Spain finished 59th in the Men’s Golf competition. Campilio shot a 289 for the tournament which was 5 over par.   IU Swimmers and Divers have had a great week with 4 Gold Medals, 5 Sliver and 1 bronze for 10 total. The United States who lead the medal count has won 59 Total medals, 20 Gold, 23 Sliver and 16 Bronze.

Golfweek’s Hoosier Am Stars Today at Indiana University Pfau Course

The Golfweek Hoosier Amateur will start today and run through Wednesday at the Indiana University Pfau Course. The 54-hole event is open to all adult amateur golfers, with Juniors in the class of 2021 and 2022 eligible. Younger Golfers can play in the tournament as long as they requested a spot with tournament director Lance Ringler before the July 26th deadline. The Entry fee was $ 250 Dollars that includes all three rounds, range balls, and tee gift.  92 Spots were available and this is the second time that the event has been played at the Pfau Course. 

Indiana Cutters Win Regular Season Finale by Forfeit

Saturday’s Battle Ground Football League Game between the Indiana Cutters and the Elkhart Panthers that was scheduled to take place in Nappanee Indiana was canceled after the Panthers informed the Cutters that they could not find officials for the game.  The Cutters win by forfeit 28-0 and it is the home teams’ responsibility to provide officials for games. The Cutters finish the regular season 5-3 and will open the playoffs on Saturday August 14th with a South Division Semifinal on the road.  Matchups will be announced after next Saturday’s makeup game between the Kentuckiana Calvary and Elkhart Panthers has been played officially ending the League’s Regular Season.

Two National Softball Tournaments to Be Hosted in Bloomington Canceled

The Girls 12 and Under Class B and the Girls 18 and under Class B Northern Nationals softball tournaments that were to be held this past weekend in Bloomington were canceled due to lack of team registrations. The City of Bloomington will host three tournaments in the summer of 2022 to continue a great tradition of hosting National Softball Tournaments year after year. The Girls 12 and under Class A, Girls 10 and Under Class B and Girls 14 Under Class B Northern National Fastpitch tournaments will all be held at Twin Lakes and Winslow Sports Parks next summer. Bloomington has hosted over 30 national softball tournaments since the early 1990’s.
