Indiana University Men’s Basketball officially signs Stanford Transfer Kanaan Carlyle
IU Head Coach Mike Woodson announced the addition of transfer Kanaan Carlyle to the Indiana men’s basketball program on Wednesday. Carlyle, an All-Pac-12 Freshman Team performer, joins Indiana after one season at Stanford. “Kanaan is a dynamic player with the ball in his hands with the length and skillset to create scoring chances for himself and others. His ability off the bounce pairs nicely with his shooting stroke. His length, quickness, and mentality give him the capability to be a high-impact defender for our ballclub. We are really excited to welcome him and his family to IU.” Mike Woodson said in a Press Release.

The 6-3 guard averaged 11.5 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game and shot 32.0% (32-of-100) from the 3-point line during his lone season with the Cardinal. The Atlanta native scored double figures in 15 games of his 23 games played and reached 20-plus points in three outings. Carlyle was named an honorable mention selection to the All-Pac-12 Freshman Team. He earned Associated Press National Player of the Week, lauded as the Dick Vitale Diaper Dandy of the Week, and voted the Pac-12 Freshman of the Week on Jan. 2, 2024, after posting 28 points on 6-of-8 shooting for the 3-point line to go along with eight rebounds and two blocks against No. 4 Arizona on Dec. 31.

Out of high school, he was a consensus four-star, top-60 recruit and the fourth-ranked player in the state of Georgia. Carlyle played his first three high school seasons at Milton before he joined Overtime Elite for his senior season. He averaged 9.0 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 3.7 assists per game for the YNG Dreamers within OTE and led the YNG Dreamers to the OTE Championship game. Indiana University Swimmer Ching Gwee Gan Named CSC Academic-All American of the Year
Indiana Women’s Swimming and Diving student-athletes Ching Hwee Gan and Anne Fowler earned College Sports Communicators first-team Academic All-America honors as announced by the organization on Tuesday Additionally, Gan was named the CSC Division-I Academic All-America Team Member of the Year. Both athletes repeat as Academic All-Americans, with Fowler earning her second-straight first team honor. The Academic All-America program celebrates the combination of athletic and academic achievement. Nominated student-athletes have a cumulative GPA above 3.50 and compete in at least four contests during the season. Indiana swimming and diving has produced a CSC DI Academic All-America Team Member of the Year in consecutive seasons. Last year, three-time NCAA Champion Andrew Capobianco earned the award on the men’s side as a fifth-year senior.

Gan, a junior nutrition science major, has achieved a perfect 4.0 grade-point average during her time at Indiana University, twice earning both Academic All-Big Ten and CSCAA Scholar All-America laurels. In February, she helped lead the IU women to their first Big Ten Championship since 2019 with individual conference titles in the 1,650-yard freestyle and 800-yard freestyle relay as well as a fifth-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle. At the 2024 NCAA Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships, Gan earned her second-straight medal in the 1,650 free with a bronze-medal finish in 15:46.90. Gan also helped the Hoosiers tie a program-record fifth-place finish in the 800-yard freestyle relay while setting the school standard in 6:54.03. Indiana placed seventh in the team standings for a second-straight season, another program-best.

Fowler, a senior studying health care management and policy, is a three-time Academic All-Big Ten and CSCAA Scholar All-American during her time at Indiana University. Like Gan, Fowler also medaled at the national meet, earning silver on the 3-meter springboard for the second season in a row. Fowler collected additional All-America accolades on the 1-meter springboard, finishing 16th nationally. The senior scored from all three diving events to contribute to the Big Ten team title, taking silver on the 3-meter board, fourth place on 1-meter and 17th from the platform.

Indiana Pacers even the Series with the Milwaukee Bucks after winning Game 2 on the road
What a difference 48 hours can make. After getting blown out in game one on Sunday, the Indiana Pacers responded with a rout of their own, beating the Bucks 125-108 on Tuesday night in game two in Milwaukee to even their Eastern Conference first round playoff series at one game apiece. The win snaps the Pacers’ 10-game playoff losing streak. Their last postseason victory was against the Cavaliers in 2018.

A first half head coach Rick Carlisle called “embarrassing” was the difference in game one. The Pacers trailed by as many as 30 points on Sunday, but they kept the game tight on Tuesday before using back-to-back three-pointers by Andrew Nembhard and Pascal Siakam to take a five-point lead into halftime. Siakam built off a playoff career-high 36 points in game one by pouring in 21 points in the first half in game two to help neutralize Milwaukee’s Damian Lillard, who scored 26 points two days after dropping 35 in the first half. The Pacers started the second half with another scoring spurt. Aaron Nesmith hit a three-pointer to put Indiana up by 11 points 2:15 into the third quarter.

The Bucks rallied within a point on a Lillard lay-up, but a Myles Turner three-point play ignited another run as Indiana would go up by nine after three. Milwaukee cut the Pacers’ lead to four in the fourth, but an 8-0 streak capped by a Siakam jumper extended the advantage to 12 forcing Bucks’ head coach Doc Rivers to call a timeout. A Turner three-pointer gave the Pacers a 20-point lead at 112-92 with just over six minutes to play. Both coaches emptied the benches to finish the game. Siakam led Indiana with 37 points, while Turner chipped in 22 and Nembhard had 20. All-Star Tyrese Haliburton was held under his average again, scoring 12, but he dished out 12 assists. Lillard paced Milwaukee with 34 points. Brook Lopez scored 22. Two-time league MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo sat out again with a calf injury. The Pacers are the first road team to win a game in this year’s NBA Playoffs. The series now shifts to Gainbridge Fieldhouse for game three on Friday evening at 5:30 p.m.

Kokomo’s Flory Bidunga named 2024 Indiana Mr. Basketball
Flory Bidunga has been voted Indiana Mr. Basketball. The high school senior and McDonald All-American is Kokomo High School’s first Mr. Basketball since Jimmy Rayl back in 1959. Bidunga has been a polarizing figure in the world of high school basketball in Indiana in the last two years. He helped get Kokomo to the state finals in 2023 where his Wildkats came up short to Ben Davis. He was voted the Gatorade Player of the Year that season.

He repeated that honor in his senior season in which he led Kokomo back to the New Castle Regional where the Wildkats lost to eventual 4A state champion Fishers. Bidunga was also named a McDonald’s All-American. Before his senior season on the hardwood, Bidunga also took to the soccer pitch in the Fall for Kokomo. Bidunga, who came to the US three years ago from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, averaged 19 points and 12 rebounds per game in his senior season. He’ll be attending Kansas next year. He chose the Jayhawks over the likes of Auburn, Duke, and Michigan.

Indy Fuel drop Game 4 to the Wheeling Nailers
The Indy Fuel continued the middle stretch of round 1 on the road in Wheeling, West Virginia for game 4. This game was all Wheeling as they shut out the Fuel 3-0. Special teams were the story of the first period. No scoring from the Fuel but a lot of pressure in their offensive zone. Both power plays were stopped by Fuel penalties. With 10 seconds remaining on their first power play, the Nailers opened the scoring off the stick of Jordan Martel at 13:19, finding his third goal of the playoffs so far. Two penalties were committed by each team and the shots fell in favor of Wheeling 7-5 with the Fuel not having a shot on goal in the final eight minutes of the period.

The second frame was almost an exact duplicate of the first. The Nailers posted the same number of shots and Jordan Martel scored his second of the game at 14:21 on the power play. Two penalties were committed by each side and the Fuel matched Wheeling with seven shots in the period. The game continued to be all Nailers as the Fuel struggled to find any action. Nine shots for each side in this period and the final shot of the game was the nail in the coffin. David Jankowski scored on the empty net with 17 seconds left to make the final score 3-0. The win gives Jaxon Castor his first playoff shutout.
