Indiana University Men’s Basketball lands Bellarmine Transfer Langdon Hatton
Bellarmine transfer big man Langdon Hatton has made it official. The Georgetown, Ind. native and North Harrison H.S. product announced on his social media accounts he has transferred to Indiana for his final season of college basketball. The 6-foot-10 and 240-pound Hatton started all 31 games for Bellarmine in 2023-24.  Taking on the biggest role of his career, he averaged 10.5 points and 7.1 rebounds in 27.8 minutes per contest.  Hatton shot 48 percent from the field overall, including 33.3 percent (15-of-45) from three.  He added 24 blocks on the season. With the addition of Hatton, Indiana now has 12 scholarship players on their 2024-25 roster.

Hatton started his career at William & Mary and then played the last two seasons at Bellarmine. In his lone season at William & Mary, Hatton scored 4.4 points and pulled down 2.7 rebounds in 14.8 minutes per contest.  As a sophomore at Bellarmine, he scored 3.5 points and added 2.3 rebounds in 12.9 minutes. With a major role as a junior,, Hatton stood out nationally according to some analytical measures.  His 2023-24 turnover rate was just 10.4%, good for No. 187 nationally. He also ranked nationally in the top-500 in defensive rebounding percentage (19.5%, No. 252), block rate (3.2%, No. 355), fouls called against per 40 minutes (2.3, No. 444), and offensive rebounding percentage (7.6%, No. 463). Hatton will give IU much needed depth at the four and five spots, joining Oumar Ballo, Malik Reneau, and Mackenzie Mgbako in those roles. Hatton has one year of eligibility remaining.  He had received interest from other high majors, including Ohio State, Louisville, Clemson, and Minnesota.

Indiana University Men’s Golf Finishes 8th at the NCAA Regional in West Lafayette
The Indiana Men’s Golf played a 54-hole scorecard of 874 (298-281-295; +10) at the 2024 NCAA West Lafayette Regional at the Kampen-Cosler Course. The Hoosiers finished eighth overall. Sixth-year senior Noah Gillard secured a team-best 14 birdies, with at least four conversions in each of the three rounds. He closed his collegiate career at 215 (74-69-72; -1) and tied for 18th. Gillard posted the lowest Par-3 scoring average in the event at 2.67 strokes per hole. He was 4-under on over the three rounds on Par-3 plays. Senior Drew Slayers tied for 28th at 218 (73-70-75; +2) with eight birdies. The Howard, Ohio, native paced the Hoosiers with 37 par conversions, tied for the 13th-most in the field of 75 players. Graduate Thomas Hursey played the 54 holes at 218 (75-71-72; +2) to tie for 28th. He holed out 10 birdies and played two rounds at or below par. Freshman Cole Starnes tied for 52nd at 224 (77-71-76; +8). He added eight birdie conversions. Redshirt junior Robert Bender III shot a 234 (76-77-81; +18) to finish 68th overall. The Louisville native tallied six birdies.  

Bloomington North Girls Track and Field Takes Home the Sectional Title
The Bloomington North Cougars took home the Sectional Title Tuesday Night winning the IHSAA Girls Track and Field Sectional Title on Ralph Seiboldt Track at Bloomington North. The Cougars have won four in a row and five in the last six years since there was no meet in 2020 due to the COVID 19 Pandemic. The Cougars have won 22 Sectional Championships in School History, and this is the sixth title for Head Coach Justin Helmer since he became head coach in 2015. Bloomington North scored 166.5 Points followed by Bloomington South with 147 and Edgewood with 96 to lead a top three finish for the Monroe County Teams. The three schools won 14 of the 16 individual events and set three new sectional records. Monroe County own this sectional holding 15 of the 16 event records and the other is a split record in the High Jump between Bloomfield and Bloomington South.

Bloomington North’s DeDe Eberle won the 100- and 300-Meter Hurdles along with the Long Jump. Kenli Sullivan won the High Jump. Hadley Lucas won the Discus setting a new sectional record with a throw of 168” 5’ and followed it up winning the shot put with a record 52” 350’. The Cougars won the 4 x100 Meter Relay.  Bloomington South won the 4 x 400 and the 4 x 800 Meter Relays. Eden Baliey won the 200 Meters and Lexi Kollbaum won the 1600 Meters. Ellie Barada won the 800 Meters setting the sectional record with a time of 2:10:58. Edgewood’s Emma Edwards won the 400 Meters and Ashley Abram won the Pole Vault. Martinsville’s Kayla Bush won the 100 Meters and Linton’s Peyton Smith won the 3200 Meters as they prevented the Monroe County sweep of Individual Sectional Titles.

Bloomington North will host the Regional Next Tuesday at 6 PM. The Cougars will be looking for their third Regional Title in a row and fourth in the last five years. Bloomington South will be looking for its first regional title since 2021. There will be four sectionals represented at the Regional with teams from Jeffersonville, Seymour and Terre Haute North Sectionals.  Bloomington North will have 8 individual qualifiers and all three relays. Bloomington South will have 7 Individual qualifiers and all 3 relays and Edgewood will have 4 individual qualifiers and 2 relays.  Eastern Greene will have 3 individuals and Owen Valley with one relay team. 

Indy Eleven Women’s Soccer opens the season with a road win
Indy Eleven wasted no time getting its title defense started as a three-goal outing led the Girls in Blue to a 3-1 victory over Racing Louisville FC in the 2024 USL W League season opener. Indy improves to 1-0-0 on the season, while Louisville falls to 0-1-0. In just the seventh minute of action, Indy newcomer Amelia White tracked down the Louisville keeper after an errant touch off a back pass to secure the ball and touch it in for the early lead. Indy had the majority of chances in the first frame and took the 1-0 lead and momentum into the locker room. That momentum got things started quickly in the second half as another fresh face to the roster in Zoe Cuneio doubled the lead for the visitors in the 47th-minute of action. Just 12 minutes later newcomer and halftime substitution Norah Jacomen joined the scoring, dispossessing the Louisville defense and taking it in for the tally.

Louisville was able to grab one back in the 89th minute off a corner. Ashton Blair and Maryn Weiger split time in the net, with Blair logging over 70 scoreless minutes. The Girls in Blue next host their home opener Monday, May 20 against Kings Hammer FC at the Grand Park Events Center. Kick is slated for 7pm with action streaming on Sports Engine Play. Single-game tickets are available for $8. Caitlin Clark scores 20 Points in her WNBA Regular Season Debut as the Connecticut Sun Take Down the Indiana Fever
In front of a sold-out Mohegan Sun Arena on Tuesday evening, the Indiana Fever dropped its regular season opener, 92-71, against the Connecticut Sun.  Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark capped her regular season debut with 20 points and three assists in more than 32 minutes of playing time. Clark’s 20 points was the second most points scored by a Fever player in a rookie debut only behind Tamika Catchings, who tallied 23 points in her first WNBA game. Clark finished the night 5-of-15 from the floor, 4-of-11 from beyond the arc, but a perfect 6-of-6 from the free throw line. Clark had 3 assists and 2 steals in 32 minutes action. Clark had four fouls and committed 10 turnovers.

Fever forward NaLyssa Smith was the only other Fever player to score in double figures with 13 points and a team-best nine rebounds. Tuesday night was Smith’s 50th game scoring at least 10 points in what was in her 64th career game played. Fever guard Kelsey Mitchell came off the bench to finish with eight points and one assist. Fever guard Erica Wheeler ended the night 3-of-3 shooting to go along with eight points and two assists. Former Indiana Hoosier Grace Berger scored 4 points in 20 minutes off the bench going 2-3 from the field, 2 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal, 2 turnovers and 3 fouls.

For Connecticut, five Sun players scored in double figures. Sun forward Alyssa Thomas recorded a triple-double with 13 points, 13 assists and 10 rebounds. Sun forward DeWanna Bonner became the WNBA’s fifth all-time leading scorer on Tuesday, passing Candice Dupree and led the Sun with 20 points. Guards DiJonai Carrington and Indianapolis native Tyasha Harris both posted 16 points for the Sun backcourt. Sun guard Rachel Banham added 10 points off the bench. Indiana opens up the regular season home schedule tonight against the New York Liberty at 7pm on WTHR Channel 13 and Prime Video.

Indiana Pacers Fall in Game 5 to the New York Knicks
The New York Knicks rebounded from Sunday’s lopsided loss to the Pacers with a lopsided win in Game 5, 121-91 on Tuesday to take a 3-2 lead in the Eastern Conference semifinals. Jalen Brunson scored 44 points for the Knicks, while Josh Hart and Alec Burks added 18 each. Pascal Siakam led the Pacers with 22 points. Indiana jumped out to an early seven-point lead in the first quarter, but New York rallied for 38-32 lead by the end of the quarter. The Knicks blew the game open in the second, leading by 15 at halftime. The Pacers must win Game 6 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse on Friday night to keep their season alive.
