IU Men’s Soccer Leaves Chicago Empty Handed Indiana men’s soccer (11-5-1, 4-5-0 B1G) outshot Northwestern 22-12 Friday night (Oct. 31) on Northwestern Medicine Field at Martin Stadium but fell to the hosts, 2-0. As Maryland, Washington and Michigan have all clinched places in the four-team Big Ten Tournament, Indiana turns its focus to a crucial regular season finale next Friday (Nov. 7) night, hosting Rutgers on Jerry Yeagley Field at Bill Armstrong Stadium. With a victory and a UCLA draw or loss at Washington, Indiana can clinch that final conference tournament berth.
In the 12th Minute Junior forward Clay Murador and Jacopo Fedrizzi both had early chances from balls over the top but couldn’t finish. Murador couldn’t get it wide of the keeper in the seventh minute, and Fedrizzi went too wide five minutes later. In the 20th Minute putting on sustained pressure, it felt like Indiana would open the scoring at any moment after sophomore midfielder Charlie Heuer whacked a shot that bounced off the final defender and away from goal. The Hoosiers earned three successive corner kicks from that opportunity but couldn’t capitalize.
In the 59th Minute The hosts opened the scoring from a corner kick as graduate midfielder Joe Suchecki’s cross went long but found the head of junior defender Bryant Mayer. Mayer headed it back across, and senior forward Alejandro Martinez Santamaria had a free header at the opposite post to make it 1-0 Northwestern. In the 65th minute Northwestern senior goalkeeper Rafael Ponce de León cleared a free kick up the field, junior midfielder Peter Riesz flicked it on for freshman forward Aaron O’Reilly, the flag stayed down, and O’Reilly finished his chance. The sequence went to VAR to check for offside, but the goal stood to make it 2-0 Wildcats. In the 70th Minute Indiana saw three successive shots in the box turned away – two blocked and a third from senior forward Palmer Ault saved. Nine Minutes later from the left side, junior forward Collins Oduro cut inside, feigned a shot and put a defender on the ground to give him a one-on-one chance in the box. His final action went begging, however, as he sent it over the bar.
Friday’s result marks the first time since Nov. 1, 2013, that Indiana has lost consecutive matches. At 4,382 days, the streak fell one day short of reaching 12 years. IU moved to 37-5-7 in the all-time series with Northwestern. Indiana will host Rutgers next Friday (Nov. 7) night in its regular season finale. With a victory and a UCLA draw or loss at Washington, IU can clinch the No. 4 and final seed in the Big Ten Tournament.
