Caitlin Clark leaves Indiana Fever’s loss to the Phoenix Mercury with a back injury, doesn’t return after 3rd-quarter scare Caitlin Clark left the Indiana Fever’s 111-109 loss to Phoenix with a back injury in the third quarter Wednesday night. The All-Star guard has been dealing with a back issue this season and left with 5:15 remaining in the third quarter. She went back to the locker room and didn’t return. Clark appeared to tweak her back in the second quarter when she was fouled shooting a 3-pointer. She fell to the ground and was rubbing her back as she stood up. In the first quarter she back to the tunnel and returned to the bench wearing a wrap around her back. She finished the game with 19 points and eight assists in 20 minutes. Clark has been listed on the injury report for most of the season with a back injury after she missed one game because of it. The Fever hadn’t given her any injury designation for the game she didn’t play and were warned by the league for not doing that. It has been a rough week for Clark, who picked up her fifth technical foul against Phoenix on Monday night. The team is petitioning the league to have it rescinded. Clark is currently second in All-Star fan voting that was released Wednesday behind teammate Aliyah Boston.
Purdue’s Braden Smith staying in Indiana after draft trade as Trey Kaufman-Renn heads to Minnesota Purdue star Braden Smith is staying home. The Westfield High School graduate was drafted 38th overall by the Chicago Bulls in the NBA draft but has reportedly been traded to the Indiana Pacers in a draft-day deal. ESPN insider Shams Charania reported Wednesday night the deal sends guard Kam Jones to Chicago, along with future considerations and cash. Smith became the NCAA’s all-time assists leader this season while helping lead the Boilermakers to multiple deep runs in the NCAA tournament during his career. He finished his four-year career in West Lafayette with 1,103 assists, while averaging 13 points and grabbing 4.5 rebounds per game. Smith started each of the 149 games he played for Purdue, averaging a career-high 15.8 points as a junior for the Boilermakers. Smith and teammate Trey Kaufman-Renn recently worked out for the Pacers. Indiana did not have a selection in this year’s NBA draft, but found a way to land a new player, nonetheless.
Kaufman-Renn was selected by the Minnesota Timberwolves with the 59th pick overall. The Sellersburg native averaged 11.3 points and 5.2 rebounds in four years in West Lafayette. He started every game he played for the Boilermakers in the past three seasons. Moments before Smith was selected, Pike High School grad Ryan Conwell was drafted 37th overall by the Oklahoma City Thunder, then reportedly traded to the Miami Heat. Conwell helped lead Indiana State to the NIT title game in 2024. He averaged 18.8 points per game for Louisville this past season, making 112 3-pointers. He started his career at South Florida before a season with the Sycamores, then transferred to Xavier for his junior season before landing in Louisville.
Purdue teammates Fletcher Loyer and Oscar Cluff were ranked among the top 100 draft prospects, according to several mock drafts and player rankings. Loyer went undrafted, while Cluff signed with the Houston Rockets for the NBA Summer League, according to ESPN insider Olgun Uluc. Loyer became Purdue’s all-time leader in 3-pointers this season. Cluff, a 6-foot, 11-inch center from Australia, averaged 10.6 points and 7.5 rebounds in 39 games for the Boilermakers after transferring from South Dakota State. A pair of Indiana Hoosiers, Lamar Wilkerson and Tucker DeVries, will also be waiting for their names to be called in the NBA draft.
