Former Indiana Hoosier Kyle Schwarber Wins MLB All-Star Game MVP with a Dramatic Performance Did somebody say home run derby to break a tie? The National League had just the guy for that. IU baseball legend and current Philadelphia Phillies star Kyle Schwarber clubbed three home runs — in three swings — in the first-ever All-Star game game “swing off” tiebreaker.  He hit three of his side’s four home runs in the tiebreaker to give the NL a 4-3 advantage and the All-Star crown. Schwarber’s dramatic exploits were enough to earn him MVP honors at the 95th Midsummer Classic despite going 0-2 with a walk during the regular nine-inning game that ended in a 6-6 tie. His long balls measured 428 feet, 461 feet and 382 feet.

“It was awesome,” Schwarber said on the FOX broadcast. “The guys were really into it. They were yelling, screaming, cheering me on every swing. When that last one goes over, they were all pumped. It was a lot of fun.” Due to a rule change in 2022, an All-Star tiebreaker was instituted where the game would be decided in a swing-off. Each team sends three hitters to the plate with three swings, and the combined homer total determines the winner.  Schwarber was chosen by NL manager Dave Roberts to be one of the three NL hitters. Schwarber is having one of the best seasons of his 11-year career in the big leagues.  The 32-year-old former IU All-American is batting .247 with 30 home runs and 69 RBIs through 96 games.

Luke Goode’s Request Denied by the NCAA to Play an Extra Season for Indiana University Men’s Basketball Luke Goode’s request for a fifth year has been denied, bringing an end to his college basketball career. The Fort Wayne, Ind. product made an Instagram post on Tuesday afternoon signaling the result of his waiver request. “Thank you, God, for the journey through highs and lows,” he wrote.  “Can’t wait for what’s next!” Goode confirmed with The South-Central Indiana News Network his request was denied.  In March following Indiana’s loss to Oregon in the Big Ten Tournament, he said the wheels were in motion to try to get one more year in Bloomington. “I love this place and grew up dreaming to play for this program. So I would love nothing more than to represent the school again,” he said at the time.

The 6-foot-7 Goode averaged a career-high 9.1 points per game for IU this past season while shooting 39.2% from three.  It was his lone season with the program he rooted for as a child.  Goode’s father Craig, and uncle, former IU quarterback Trent Green, played football for the Hoosiers. Goode started his college career at Illinois, where he played three seasons.  He only played in 10 games during his 2022-23 sophomore year due to an injury.  That created the opening for the waiver request that was ultimately denied. Indiana currently has 12 scholarship players on its 2025-26 roster.

Indiana Fever beat the Connecticut Sun in Boston The Indiana Fever (12-10) earned an 85-77 victory over the Connecticut Sun in front of a sold-out crowd of 19,156 at TD Garden in Boston, Mass.  The Fever opened the game going 8-8 from the field, including 10 points from Natasha Howard, but Connecticut was able to cut into the deficit, making it just a one-point game at the end of the first quarter. The second quarter saw both teams struggling offensively, with the Fever scoring just 15 points, but six points from Kesley Mitchell and a clutch three-pointer from Sophie Cunningham helped Indiana take a 44-42 lead into the halftime break.  Embattled in a tight back-and-forth game, both sides traded leads, but Cunningham (five points), Howard (five points) and Mitchell (six points) kept Indiana out in front 62-60 at the end of the third quarter.
