Indiana University Track and Field Closes out the Jesse Owens Classic in Columbus, Ohio The Indiana University track and field team completed the second day of the Jesse Owens Classic. Head coach Ed Beathea said that he, “was happy to see us get some things done this weekend considering the challenging weather conditions. I felt that we were able to better prepare ourselves for the latter part of the season in some areas. We had some very competitive efforts that will go a long way as we enter the championship part of the season.”

Day two started in the field with the women’s shot put where Makayla Hunter threw a distance of 17.03m to place second overall. Kelly Moran followed in the women’s triple jump with a second-place finish, jumping a mark of 12.59m/41-3.75. The Hoosiers took the top two spots in the women’s high jump as Taylor Schoonveld (1.73m/5-8) and Josie Page (1.71m/5-7) would take first and second place, respectively. Chayla Rankin also joined them in the top 10, placing seventh with a height of 1.65m/5-5. The men’s pole vault group saw production from Tyler Carrel and Lukas Brauc, as they would finish first (5.26m/17-3) and second (5.21m/17-1; PR), respectively in the event. Hunter would continue to show production in the field, finishing fourth in the women’s discus throw with a mark of 46.77m/153-5. Indiana University Baseball Drops Middle Game of the Northwestern Series Struggles in the middle innings have been a regular staple of Saturday afternoons in the Big Ten. A 7-4 loss to Northwestern (18-25-1, 6-17 B1G) in Evanston by the Indiana Baseball team (21-26, 7-16 B1G) was the sixth-consecutive loss on a Saturday and the fifth straight in conference play. On the year, the Hoosiers are just 1-7 in the middle game of a Big Ten weekend and 0-4 on the road. IU will have the chance to win the series tomorrow in the fifth rubber match of the year. Another hot start from IU’s offense had the feeling that momentum rolled over from Friday’s victory at Wrigley Field.

The Hoosiers scored in the first inning and had two on with no outs in the third inning after a two-run double from sophomore shortstop Cooper Malamazian. However, a strikeout and an unconventional double play halted any juice from the IU offense and shifted it right back to the home team. Northwestern unleashed seven unanswered runs before IU finally stopped the bleeding with an RBI groundout from freshman second baseman Landen Fry in the eighth inning. The tying run came to the plate in the ninth inning, but IU couldn’t get anything across in the frame. Sophomore outfielder Hogan Denny was the star of the show on Saturday afternoon. He provided his third four-hit day of the season and his first in conference action. His first inning single was the 100th career of his young, but outstanding career in Bloomington. Denny reached all five times but never came to the plate with runners on the bases. Sophomore first baseman Jake Hanley and sophomore shortstop Cooper Malamazian each had multi-hit efforts.

Ball State Men’s Volleyball Defeats Pepperdine in a Five Set Thriller to Advance to the Final Four Trailing 14-12 in the fifth set, the Ball State men’s volleyball team was the benefit of a crucial Pepperdine service error which sent senior Patrick Rogers to the service line. The semifinalist for the 2026 AVCA National Collegiate Men’s Player of the Year did not disappoint. His first serve helped the Cardinals (26-4) even the score with a monster triple block. His second serve landed in between the Waves (24-7) defense for his third service ace of the night. His third and final serve of the rally blasted off a Pepperdine defender and sent the crowd of 1,252 fans at Riverview Health Arena into a frenzy. It also sealed a hard-fought 3-2 (25-23, 23-25, 25-22, 19-25, 16-14) victory to send the Cardinals to the semifinal round of the NCAA Men’s Volleyball Championship on May 9 at Pauley Pavilion in Los Angeles, California.

The Cardinals earn its first NCAA Tournament win since 1995, topping the third-place match against Hawai’i, and reach the national semifinal for the second time in five years — the 17th appearance in program history.  With the win over the Waves, Ball State ties the all-time series in NCAA Tournament play, avenging a straight-set loss back in 2002.  Along with his match-high four service aces, Rogers blasted 15 kills and tied for match-high honors with nine digs. Libero Victor Scherer and outside Wil Basilio matched with nine digs each.  Ball State tied its season-high total in blocks with 17.5, led by Will Patterson who had a career night with 11 in the contest along with a career-best 12 kills on .667 hitting. Basilio also saw a career high at the net, tallying six blocks.

Ryan Louis struck down a team-best 16 kills on a .324 clip, accompanied by five total blocks, his fifth match this season with five or more. The Cardinals out-hit Pepperdine .327-.297, guided by floor general Lucas Machado who had 52 assists, just two shy of matching his career best. Machado was also a contributing defensive pressure, totaling seven blocks with six digs.  With seven days to prepare for Los Angeles, Ball State will matchup against UC Irvine in the semifinal, with start time to be announced.

Indiana Fever Dominate the Nigeria National Team in their Final Preseason Game The Indiana Fever rounded out their three-game preseason schedule on Saturday by hosting the Nigerian national team at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. The final contest of the preseason gave the Fever their closest look at a fully healthy rotation. Indiana’s final tune-up ahead of the beginning of the regular season was an encouraging showing from the Fever. Scrappy defense and clean transition offense allowed Indiana to record 70 points by halftime as they led by 41 points at the break. Indiana amassed 100 points by the four-minute mark of the fourth quarter, and defeated Nigeria, 105-57.

Aliyah Boston played her first preseason minutes on Saturday and excelled as Indiana’s offensive hub in the post. She recorded six assists in her 10 minutes along with four points on 2-for-3 shooting. Indiana added a new wrinkle to its offense as both Caitlin Clark and Kelsey Mitchell set screens for Boston as the ball handler. One instance of the action resulted in a wide-open drive to the rim for Boston. “AB’s game has expanded,” White said. “She played point forward for us last year, and when you have two playmakers that are screeners, it makes defenses make a choice. “I think that we’ve got to be creative in ways that we can get one another shots and create space. I think that we have an opportunity with those three on the floor to do a lot of different things.”

Clark followed a 21-point performance against the Wings on Thursday with 12 points in just 13 minutes on Saturday. She shot 2-for-3 from long range, and dished out four assists. Mitchell’s 17 points led the Fever in scoring, and she knocked down all three of her 3-point attempts in her 14 minutes. Raven Johnson had another stellar preseason showing – she snuck a crafty pass through two defenders to Mitchell for two points in the first half, and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds over the course of the game. She scored another nine points on Saturday, bringing her preseason scoring average to six points per game. Three Fever players had scored in double figures by halftime – Clark, Mitchell, and Makayla Timpson. Timpson was a strong presence down low as she blocked two shots, grabbed five rebounds, and scored 12 points.

Of Indiana’s regular rotation players, only Lexie Hull remained sidelined with an injury on Saturday. A lingering hamstring issue kept her out of all three preseason contests. “She seems to be doing really well,” White said of Hull on Saturday. “…With some of those nagging things, if it’s not necessary then we’ll take our time. Now she’ll have a whole other week before we have to play again.” Indiana got contributions from players up and down the roster in its preseason finale. It culminated in a 48-point victory and momentum that the Fever can carry into the week preceding their regular season opener next Saturday. The Fever are set to host Paige Bueckers and the Dallas Wings on Saturday, May 9 at 1:00 PM to kick off their regular season slate.
