Purdue University Wrestling to Compete on Aircraft Carrier Deck in South Carolina Purdue, The Citadel, and Air Force wrestling squads will complete in the third annual meet on the top deck of a decommissioned aircraft carrier in Charleston Harbor, South Carolina. Throwdown on the Yorktown will be Nov. 7-8. Tickets will go on sale Aug. 1. Purdue announced Tuesday it will be the second Big Ten men’s program to partake in the competition. Maryland previously participated in 2025. The USS Yorktown CV-10, an Essex-class aircraft carrier that operated during World War II and the Vietnam War, serves as the nation’s first aircraft carrier museum. It’s hosted other sporting events on the top desk, including college basketball matchups, sport fishing championships, and the Southern Atlantic League’s Home Run Derby. The Citadel, located in Charleston, will host the wrestling event.
In a news release, Purdue Head Coach Tony Ersland said, “We are honored and excited to give our guys the chance to wrestle at a once-in-a-lifetime setting like the Yorktown. It’s something they’ll always remember beyond their wrestling years. To be able to also celebrate America’s 250th anniversary in a patriotic way like this will be something they can tell their kids about someday. It will be a great opportunity for us to challenge ourselves against two strong Division I programs early in the season.” Purdue’s wrestling season will open with a home dual against Kent State on Nov. 1 in Holloway Gymnasium, with free admission. The rest of the 2026-27 wrestling season schedule will be finalized and announced in the coming weeks.
Man Faces Charges, Accused of Staking and Harassing Indiana Fever Guard Sophie Cunningham A 49-year-old Indianapolis man is facing criminal charges after being accused of sending threatening and explicit messages to Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham through social media, Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears said Wednesday. Mears announced that Kevin Singh has been charged with stalking, intimidation, and harassment for “allegedly sending multiple threatening and explicit messages” to Cunningham. Police arrested Singh on Tuesday, and the prosecutor’s office filed charges against him on Wednesday. He’s due in court Thursday morning for an initial hearing. “What you see in this case is, and hopefully what it sends a message to people in the community (about), is that there (are) real consequences to what you say online,” Mears said.
According to the probable cause affidavit, Singh’s online behavior began escalating in February. Prosecutors say his conduct grew increasingly threatening even after he was contacted by team security. The court documents said Singh sent several aggressive messages to Cunningham via Instagram and X, some sexually explicit. One said, “I’m going to marry you. I can’t wait.” Another said, “I wanna grow with you.” The Fever’s head of security, John Ball, ultimately sent Singh a Cease-and-Desist Letter. Singh responded to Ball with several aggressive messages, one saying, “your life is about to be ****ed with.” Cunningham told police she has never met Singh, and that since she became aware of his comments, she has been staying home more and even having nightmares. “Everyone has a right to feel safe at their workplace, and this compromised her ability to feel safe in the workplace,” Mears said.
The case carries added weight given Singh’s prior criminal history, according to Mears. Singh is on probation in Hendricks County following guilty pleas to two counts of invasion of privacy. In that case, the Hendricks County Prosecutor’s Office dismissed five felonies, including a stalking charge. This marks the second time a person has faced criminal stalking charges connected to a member of the Indiana Fever. In July, Michael Lewis pleaded guilty to stalking and harassing Caitlin Clark and was sentenced to nearly 2-1/2 years in prison. Mears credited law enforcement for their response. “We commend Marion County Sheriff Kerry Forestal and the Marion County Sheriff’s Office for their swift and decisive work on this investigation that led to this arrest.”
Former WNBA President Val Ackerman to be Honored at Saturday’s Indiana Fever Home Game The Indiana Fever are in the middle of a three-game homestand. The Fever beat the Phoenix Mercury 86-77 on Monday night and Lost the Mercury on Wednesday night inside Gainbridge Fieldhouse. They will then take on the Los Angeles Sparks on Saturday night. During the matchup against the Sparks, the Fever will recognize founding WNBA President Val Ackerman with the Lin Dunn Inspiring Women Award. The presentation will place at halftime of the Fever’s Inspiring Women Night.
“As we celebrate the WNBA’s 30th season, it’s especially meaningful to recognize someone whose vision helped make this league possible,” Fever President of Basketball and Business Operations Kelly Krauskopf said in a news release. “Val’s leadership helped build the WNBA from the ground up, creating opportunities for generations of women across our sport. I had the privilege of beginning my WNBA career alongside her during the league’s earliest days, and I saw firsthand how her leadership shaped not only the league but the people who helped build it. Her legacy of breaking barriers and lifting up others perfectly reflects the spirit of the Lin Dunn Inspiring Women Award.” Ackerman is currently the Big East Conference commissioner. She will retire from the role on Aug. 31. Ackerman was the WNBA’s first president from 1996-2005. She also was a past president of USA Basketball.
She is a member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame (2021), the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame (2011) and the Sports Broadcasting Hall of Fame (2023). “I remember vividly when the Fever joined the WNBA in 2000, and it’s been a thrill to see how far the team has come under the leadership of Herb Simon, Kelly Krauskopf, Tamika Catchings and the entire Pacers Sports & Entertainment organization,” Ackerman said in the news release. “I’m deeply honored to receive an award named for the legendary Lin Dunn and to have played a role in providing women’s pro basketball players and their fans with the platform they so richly deserve.” Dunn, who is a senior advisor for the Fever, previously has served as both the Fever’s head coach and the franchise’s general manager. Dunn was the inaugural recipient of the team’s Inspiring Women Award in 2025. It was renamed after her.
Indianapolis 500 Champion Felix Rosenqvist leaving Meyer Shank Racing at the End of the Indy Car Season The current Indianapolis 500 champion will drive for a new team during the 2027 NTT IndyCar Series season. The South-Central Indiana News Network has confirmed that Felix Rosenqvist has let Meyer Shank Racing (MSR) know that he will be leaving the team at the end of the 2026 season. Rosenqvist won the 2026 Indianapolis 500 in the closest finish in the event’s history. He beat Team Penske’s Davis Malukas by just 0.0233 seconds. “It’s unfortunate that Felix has decided to move on from MSR at the end of the season, particularly given everything we’ve accomplished together, including this year’s Indy 500 victory,” MSR owner Mike Shank said. “Over the past several years, Felix has played an important role in helping build this program into what it is today, and we’re grateful for his contributions both on and off the track. There are still eight races left on the schedule, and everyone at MSR remains fully committed to achieving the strongest results possible in the championship and delivering for our partners.”
Rosenqvist has driven for MSR since the 2024 season. “While we wish Felix nothing but success in the next chapter of his career, our focus at MSR is on the future and ensuring we have the right driver in place for the 2027 season,” Shank said. “As a team, we’ve made tremendous progress over the last few years, and maintaining that momentum is a top priority. We’re actively evaluating our options and hope to have an announcement to make in the coming months, so stay tuned.” Rosenqvist is currently sixth in the IndyCar standings. The next race in the 2026 NTT IndyCar Series season will take place on Sunday, July 5 at Mid-Ohio.
