Indiana’s Avery Parker powered the Hoosiers to victory over Rutgers with a walk-off home run in the bottom of the fifth frame. The Hoosiers have won four in a row and are now 20-5 on the year and 3-1 in Big Ten play.

The Hoosiers went 1-2-3 at the top of the first inning with a ground out to Alex Cooper at shortstop, a strikeout by pitcher Taylor Hess and a flyball to right fielder Hannah Haberstroh. A leadoff double by Aly VanBrandt put the Hoosiers in scoring position early. A sac-fly to the warning track of centerfield gave VanBrandt plenty of time to find home plate and put Indiana on the board with a 1-0 lead at the end of the first frame. Indiana’s defense worked efficiently at the top of the second inning, recording three outs in three at-bats for the Scarlet Knights. Haberstroh stole second base, drawing a pick-off attempt from home to second by Rutgers’ backstop. The throw to second allowed pinch runner Neveah Nash to score from third base to put IU up 3-0 to end the second inning.

Senior Ellie Goins sent a no-doubter three-run homer to center field on the first pitch of the at-bat. Runs from Madalyn Strader, Josie Bird and Goins moved the Hoosiers to a 6-0 lead. Samantha Delhoyo hit a two-run homer to center field in the top of the fifth frame. The homerun put the Scarlet Knights on the board and moved the score to 6-2. Despite the two runs scored by Rutgers in the fifth, the Hoosiers maintained momentum. Alex Cooper grounded out to second base and advanced runners around the bags for one run batted in. After three consecutive balls, Avery Parker sent a home run deep into right center field. The three-run, walk-off homer sealed the run rule in the fifth frame of play. Indiana has won four games in a row dating back to the Saturday (March 7) won over Minnesota in their Big Ten opening series. Three Hoosiers had a multiple RBI game: VanBrandt (2), Parker (4), Goins (3). Ellie Goins’ home run marked her first in the cream and crimson. The longball was her third of the season and Goins’ career. Junior Taylor Hess improved her pitching record to 6-1.

Indiana University Baseball Drops Series Opener at Oregon Despite a great pitching performance from a trio of arms, the Indiana Baseball team (7-10, 1-3 B1G) couldn’t find a way to win the series opener on Friday evening against Oregon. IU’s offense stalled after the fourth inning as Oregon tied the game in the sixth and took the lead in the seventh in a 3-2 victory at PK Park. The Hoosiers were just 1-for-15 with runners on base in the contest. IU moved its top two starting pitchers back a day, handing graduate student right-handed pitcher Reagan Rivera the ball on Friday evening. The veteran delivered four scoreless innings, allowing just one hit with three strikeouts. Graduate student relievers Conner Linn and Gavin Seebold (L, 1-1) gave up just three runs in the final four frames. It’s the 10th time this season that IU has allowed five-or-fewer runs.

Redshirt freshman designated hitter Brayden Ricketts got the scoring started in the first inning. He doubled to dead center and scored after a pair of wild pitches. Freshman second baseman Landen Fry added to the lead in the fourth inning with an RBI single up the middle to score sophomore first baseman Jake Hanley. IU stranded runners on base in each of the final four frames without bringing them home. The tying run was left at second base in the ninth. The Trojans’ season ends at 17-13, while the Tigers (23-8) advance to the second round. Kaycie Warfel led Taylor with 20 points to go with five steals. Warfel finished her freshman campaign with 699 points, a Taylor single-season freshman scoring record. Madi Allen added 10 points and a team-high 10 rebounds for the double-double, while Emma Fohl contributed eight points and three assists off the bench. Marissa Trout finished with seven points and four rebounds, and Kendall Sietsema chipped in five points in reserve minutes.

Georgetown jumped out to a commanding start, racing to a 12-0 lead as Taylor opened 0-for-9 shooting from the field. The Tigers shot 50 percent in the opening quarter behind 10 first-quarter points from Kayra Freeman, who knocked down a pair of threes and added a layup as Georgetown built the early cushion. Trout finally got the Trojans on the board with a layup at the 5:17 mark, but the Tigers continued to push the advantage, stretching it to as many as 17 at 21-4.

Taylor found some life late in the period as Trout and Sietsema each connected from beyond the arc to trim the deficit to 23-11 before a Georgetown bucket made it 25-11 after one quarter. The Trojans showed improved fight in the second period, outscoring the Tigers 16-15 in the frame. Fohl drilled a three-pointer from the top of the key to cut it to 30-15 at the 7:40 mark, and Warfel strung together a mid-range jumper and a three-pointer to pull Taylor within 13 at 35-22 heading into the under-five media timeout. Warfel then picked up a steal and converted a fastbreak layup with the foul to make it 35-25, but Georgetown answered down the stretch to take a 40-27 lead into the half.

Taylor came out with energy in the third quarter, trimming the deficit to single digits for the first time since trailing 9-0 near the start of the game. An Allen jumper at the 7:59 mark made it 40-31, and a Kelly basket at 6:11 cut it to 44-33 as the Trojans hung around. Georgetown, however, responded each time Taylor made a push. Daysha Reid hit a pair of third-quarter threes, and Daisy Gale worked her way to the free throw line to help the Tigers rebuild the lead to 59-42 entering the fourth.

Georgetown pulled away in the final period behind continued production from Gale and Freeman. Gale finished with a game-high 20 points and 14 rebounds, while Freeman matched her with 24 points on 9-of-15 shooting to go with four assists and four steals. Reserve Laisha Lazu added 10 points and nine rebounds while going a perfect 5-for-5 from the field. The Tigers shot 46.3 percent for the game and held a 42-24 advantage in points in the paint. Taylor shot 30.4 percent from the floor and 21.7 percent from three-point range while committing 17 turnovers that Georgetown converted into 19 points. Contributions at the plate came across the board and were headlined by senior Kaylee Larkin, who blasted a pair of home runs and collected six RBI. Lizzy Sinders continued her penchant for crossing the plate, scoring five runs for a Crossroads League-leading 19 in 16 games. Five Trojans had an extra-base hit, and six produced an RBI in the blowout win.

TU opened the scoring in the first, plating a trio of runs with two outs. Larkin, Grace Mullins, and Ava Everman each delivered a two-out RBI for the early advantage. The Cougars got one back in the top of the third, but the Trojans answered with six in the bottom half to balloon the lead to 9-1. Madisyn Standridge delivered the key hit in the inning, a bases-clearing double with one out and the bases loaded. TU continued the offensive momentum in the next frame, plating five more in the fourth. Another bases-clearing double, this one rocketed off the bat of Bella Browning highlighted the inning as the Trojans cruised to a run-rule victory. Sinders (4-3) picked up the win inside the circle, tossing five innings of three run ball. Only two runs were earned, and the freshman fanned five in another solid outing as she has established herself as the Trojans number on option.

A tighter scoreline in the nightcap, a 9-6 victory, was the result of one key hit from the Cougars. The Trojans scored in the first five innings to take a commanding lead and despite a Grand Slam off the bat of Kiera Mayer for MVNU, the Purple and Gray never trailed. Larkin belted a two-out two-run home run to open the scoring and repeated the feat two innings later to push the lead to 5-0 after three innings. Kaylyn Applegate was cruising through three innings, extending her scoreless streak to eight innings after a five-inning shutout on Tuesday. The freshman hurler faced trouble in the fourth, allowing the first three runners to reach before a grand slam cut the lead to 5-4 and forced sophomore Claire Cullen to enter the game. Mullins delivered a clutch two-RBI single in the bottom of the inning to push the lead back to a four-run advantage. Sinders had a sacrifice fly in the following inning before the Cougars scored in the sixth and seventh to get within three. Cullen (3-2) had one of her best outings out of the bullpen, firing four innings inside the circle and picking up her third win of the season. The sophomore allowed two hits, two runs, and struck out one in harsh conditions. Malott led the onslaught at the plate with three hits and three runs scored, with Manning going 2-4 with three runs, Frickel going 2-5 with five RBI and two runs and Ben Kennedy going 2-5 with two runs and two RBI. Each of the four Trojans swatted a home run in the game, in addition to a pinch-hit shot from Rylee Singleton, with Frickel clearing the batter’s eye in dead-center and Malott blasting a ball nearly 460 feet to right-center.

It was more of the same in the second game, with Malott staying white-hot with a 4-5 showing that included a trio of doubles and three more runs batted in. Manning went 2-2 with his second home run of the day and four runs scored and Fletcher Roemmich, Frickel and Quinn Kunkel all adding multi-hit performances. The knockout blow came via an eight-run outburst for TU in the third inning, as the first nine Trojans reached safely in the inning. Two-run doubles off the bats of Sam Gladd and Malott fueled the game-sealing rally. The duo of Gage Gongwer and Luke Klunke helped close the game down, teaming for four innings with just one earned run in relief. Gongwer took the win on the hill, moving to 4-0 on the season with just one earned run allowed over his three innings of action on Friday.
