The Illinois high school basketball coaching great worked for 14 years as an assistant coach under IU basketball legend Bob Knight. He was hired by Knight ahead of the 1985-86 season when Jim Crews left his assistant post to take the Evansville job. Felling was part of one national title, four Big Ten titles, and the Hoosiers made an NCAA Tournament appearance every season he was on staff. In 1997 Felling moved from an assistant coaching role to an administrative position. On Dec. 4, 1999, Knight released a statement indicating Felling had decided to step away from the program to pursue other interests outside of basketball.

Later reports indicated Felling was fired following a series of incidents, culminating with an altercation with Knight. Felling is best known for his 16-year run at Lawrenceville H.S. (Lawrenceville, Ill.), where he led the school to four state championships in 1972, 1974, 1982, and 1983, including back-to-back undefeated 34-0 seasons in 1982 and 1983. He is in the Illinois Basketball Hall of Fame for his coaching prowess. IU player Marty Simmons played for Felling in high school and was the star of those 1982 and 1983 teams.

College Football coaches want expanded College Football Playoff; elimination of conference title games College football coaches want to follow in the path of college basketball and expand the postseason tournament. But they also want to shorten the season, by removing the conference championship games and making other adjustments to condense the overall college football calendar in the process. Here is a statement published by the American Football Coaches Association on the topic following their meetings last week:

The American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) has identified the length of the college football season as a critical issue that needs to be addressed. As we modernize our game to better serve student-athletes, we have fallen short in structuring a season that concludes in a timely and sustainable way.

The AFCA recommends that the season be completed by the second Monday in January, and that this date serve as an organizing principle in shaping the future of college football. To achieve this, we propose the following changes: Eliminate conference championship games Reduce scheduled bye weeks from two to one Preserve a dedicated window for the Army-Navy game, while allowing flexibility for other games to be played on that day outside the window Reduce the minimum number of days between contests to no fewer than six

In addition, future playoff models should maximize the number of participants while honoring the proposed completion date. Structuring the season in this way will better support student-athletes by more closely matching the academic calendar and aligning with the single transfer portal window. It also elevates the quality of play during the most meaningful stretch of the season by removing unnecessary breaks and preserving competitive rhythm.

The AFCA board has no authority within the NCAA or College Football Playoff governance structure, but it does include coaches with influence over decision-makers. And they represent the latest voice encouraging expansion of the College Football Playoff (CFP). Currently, a 16-team CFP is supported by the SEC, and a 24-team tournament is preferred by the Big Ten. Those two parties need to come to an agreement before expansion moves forward. Conference commissioners and the CFP governance committee have been having discussions on a potential restructuring of the CFP in recent weeks.

The 24-team approach has more momentum at the moment, and is the likely approach if the financial considerations, including the elimination of the conference title games, make sense. Indiana made its first CFP in 2024 and won it in 2025. IU coach Curt Cignetti has said he supports the Big Ten position.

Indiana Wesleyan Third Baseman and Mitchell HS Graduate Ben Setizinger Earns Second Team Crossroads League Honors Indiana Wesleyan had six players named to the All-Crossroads League Baseball team for the 2026 season including Mitchell HS Graduate Ben Setizinger. In his first season with the Wildcats Seitzinger led the team with a .401 batting average which ranked third in the Crossroads League. On Tuesday, May 5, four of Indy’s brightest stars were named to the team of seven: middle blocker Lydia Martyn, libero Elena Scott, opposite hitter Azhani Tealer and setter Mia Tuaniga. “We’re very proud to have players on the MLV first team,” Ignite head coach Lauren Bertolacci said. “It’s a big honor for them and extremely well-deserved. None of them are really a surprise for me, and I think they’ve been consistent performers throughout the whole season.”

This is Tealer’s second straight year being named to the first team. This season, the star opposite hitter finished fifth in the league in kill percentage (45.1%), ninth in points (338) and 10th in kills (302). For the rest of the group, it’s their first time being named to the first team. Tuaniga guided the team throughout the season while also earning some points of her own. She finished second in assists per set (11.49) and second in aces (25). While Tuaniga played in just 18 of the team’s 28 matches, Martyn anchored the Ignite at the net. She finished second in kill percentage (49.8%), fourth in efficiency (35.5%) and sixth in blocks (49). The Ignite may have paved the way to victory throughout the season with their high-level offense, but that wouldn’t be possible without a strong defense. Scott orchestrated the team’s defense this season, finishing fourth in digs (36) and helping the Ignite lead the league in opponent hitting efficiency (20.7%).

Indiana Fever Waive a Trio of Players Before Saturday’s Season Opener The Indiana Fever announced on Wednesday that they have waived three players ahead of Saturday’s regular season opener against the Dallas Wings.
