Indiana (42-15) took the early lead in the game, but Virginia (39-13) tied the game on three separate occasions, 3-3, 5-5 and 7-7. The Cavaliers then took their only lead of the game with the walk-off RBI single with two outs in the eighth inning.

Indiana got off to a quick start with three runs in the opening frame. After Alex Cooper walked with one out, Avery Parker followed with a two-run home run to straight-away center field. With two outs, Madalyn Strader reached on an error, stole second base and a pair of errors allowed her to score. A three-run second inning tied the game for Virginia as Jade Hylton hit a three-run home run to right field with two outs. Parker started the third inning with a hit-by-pitch before a pair of quick ground outs. Ellie Goins followed with a home run to center field to make it 5-3. A pair of fourth-inning solo home runs pulled Virginia even the score at five-all.

Goins posted just the second multi-home run game in IU’s NCAA Tournament history with a two-run shot in the fifth inning to push IU back into the lead, 7-5. The Cavaliers answered again with two runs in the sixth inning thanks to a bases loaded walk and an RBI ground out. After Indiana left the bases loaded in the top of the seventh, Virginia put runners on first and second with two outs in the top half of the frame. A single up the middle looked to score the game-winning run, but a perfect throw from Goins in center field and a nice tag by Parker sent the game to extra innings. A leadoff walk came around to score in the bottom of the eighth inning on a Reagan Hickey two-out single to right-center field. Goins crashed into the walk trying to make the leaping catch at the wall, but with the runner going on contact, the winning run crossed the plate.

IU is now 2-2 all-time against Virginia with wins in 2001 & 2019 and losses in 1995 and 2026. Her four RBIs are also at least tied for the most in an NCAA Tournament game, as no Hoosier has ever had five RBIs in an NCAA postseason contest. With her throw to home plate in the seventh inning to cut down a run, Goins produced just her second outfield assist of the season. She now has five career outfield assists, with three coming over three seasons at NC State. Alex Cooper extended her reached base streak to 19-game with a walk. She also scored one run. Avery Parker reached base three times in the game. She hit her 54th career home run in the first inning and was hit-by-pitch twice in the game. The home run from Parker was the 20th of the season. John Colquitt was the first to advance, running the fourth fastest qualifying time in the men’s 400-meter hurdles. Trelee Banks-Rose followed with the second fastest qualifying time in the 200-meter sprint, advancing to Sunday’s final. Lily Myers closed the prelim events with the final qualifying time for Sunday’s 1,500-meter final. Claire Overfelt closed the day in the women’s 10k race. Trailing only Washington (7:45.642) and Ohio State (7:52.599) – two ranked programs – the Hoosiers got their bowball over in 8:00.271, just ahead of Iowa’s 8:00.445. Indiana trailed Minnesota at the halfway mark of the V8 race by 1.4 seconds but rallied in the back half to capture the final qualifying place by about the same margin. Rutgers (6:50.579) and Ohio State (6:55.935) took the two leading spots, but the Hoosiers were not far behind with a time of 6:58.023, as Sunday promises an exciting final race. IU finished with a three-seat advantage over the Golden Gophers, who timed a 6:59.339. Indiana and Iowa battled it out again in the 3V8 race, as Indiana erased a 1.1-second deficit at the 1,000-meter mark to outpace the Hawkeyes by 2.9. The Hoosiers earned the third place finish with a time of 7:59.891, as Iowa just kept in touch with a time of 8:02.868.

RESULTS

V8
1. Illinois (28-25, 14-15 B1G) scored a pair of runs in the extra inning without a hit. A series of free passes – part of 13 on the night from IU’s pitching staff – provided the necessary scoring to even the series. Sophomore utilityman Hogan Denny did his best to try and win Friday’s contest. A three-hit day was capped off by a game-tying three run home run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth. It was his 22nd multi-hit effort of the year and team leading 14th long ball of the campaign. He did all of that while splitting time on defense between third base and catcher as IU continues to struggle with injuries.

Sophomore outfielder Caleb Koskie ensured that IU had some early run support. He provided RBIs on a groundout, double and sacrifice fly in three of the first five innings to even the score at three. Sophomore shortstop Will Moore had a solo home run in the bottom of the ninth inning that began the rally in that frame. He and Denny had the only multi-hit efforts for the Hoosiers. A group of six seniors on the mound tried to will the game to the finish on Senior Day in Bloomington. Graduate student right-handed pitcher Reagan Rivera (L, 0-5) put the first two runners on in extra innings as Illinois quickly regained the lead.
