The Portland Trail Blazers are hiring Micah Nori as their next head coach, the franchise announced Tuesday. Nori gets his first-ever head coaching job after spending five years as lead assistant for the Minnesota Timberwolves. The Middletown, Ohio native didn’t play for Indiana men’s basketball. But Nori played for IU baseball from 1994-97 and later returned in 2005 for a short stint as Indiana’s hitting coach, before eventually joining the Toronto Raptors as an assistant coach in 2009. This is the less shocking move of the two former Hoosiers to take over NBA teams. Monday saw Dusty May — former IU men’s basketball manager and eventual national title-winning head coach at Michigan — leave the reigning champions to become head coach of the Dallas Mavericks. Nori and May are the only current head coaches with IU ties. But they’re joined in the NBA coaching ranks by Mike Woodson, who’s currently associate head coach of the Sacramento Kings. Prior to his time with the Timberwolves, Nori worked as an assistant coach with four other NBA teams. He spent four years with the Raptors, then went to the Kings for two years. After that, he joined the Denver Nuggets for three seasons, and then he went to the Detroit Pistons for three more years. Nori became Chris Finch’s lead assistant in Minnesota after his time in Detroit.

Indiana University’s Memorial Stadium ranks among toughest places to play in new College Football Video Game The new reality of Indiana University football is almost unfathomable for longtime fans. Case in point: IU’s Memorial Stadium ranks as one of the top 25 “Toughest Places to Play” in the upcoming college football video game. The Hoosiers’ home field is the 17th toughest stadium for road teams, according to rankings released this week for “EA Sports College Football 27.” It’s hard to argue with that, given Indiana’s recent success at home. Since Curt Cignetti arrived for the 2024 season, the Hoosiers haven’t lost a home game and own some notable wins: 56-7 over Nebraska (’24 season), 20-15 over Michigan (’24 season), 63-10 over No. 9 Illinois (’25 season) and 56-6 over UCLA (’25 season).

The Hoosiers are, of course, coming off a national championship, the first in school history and one of the great underdog stories in college football history. Cignetti has changed IU’s fortune and upended the college football establishment. When he arrived in Bloomington, he had to beg fans to stay until the clock expired. Now, the advantage at Memorial Stadium is palpable. “We feed off of their energy,” Cignetti told the IndyStar after IU’s 31-7 dismantling of Wisconsin in last season’s home finale. “I really think that us playing at home is at least a 14-point advantage.”

Cignetti’s not wrong (you can Google it). The Hoosiers have won 15 straight home games, the longest active streak in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). The atmosphere at Memorial Stadium has certainly changed to reflect IU’s success. Before, few would consider it one of the top home fields in college football. In fact, IU’s stadium didn’t even crack the top 25 in last year’s edition of EA Sports’ college football game. Several Big Ten schools ranked among the top 25 toughest places to play: Ohio State’s Ohio Stadium (No. 2), Penn State’s Beaver Stadium (No. 3), Oregon’s Autzen Stadium (No. 6), Michigan’s Michigan Stadium (No. 12), Washington’s Husky Stadium (No. 15) and Iowa’s Kinnick Stadium (No. 19). LSU’s Tiger Stadium took the top spot. Notre Dame Stadium, home of the Fighting Irish, landed at No. 20. “EA Sports College Football 27” comes out on July 9, although early access is available for players who pre-order the game. The NFL’s decision came down to its right to decide whether to hold a supplemental draft, per the collective bargaining agreement, as league officials said they believed it would ultimately become a distraction to teams as they begin training camps. “His application carries with it a lot of issues,” an NFL source told ESPN. “Core of the game integrity issues.” Sorsby admitted to betting thousands of times on college and pro sports, bets that totaled upward of $90,000 and included 40 wagers on Indiana football while he was on the team.

Sorsby’s attorney, Jeffrey Kessler, told ESPN that the NFL’s decision to not hold a supplemental draft “is a violation of the CBA and the law. We will pursue this immediately with the NFLPA.” A union source told ESPN that the NFLPA has not made any determination on if, how or whether there are legal grounds to act on this. The league told Sorsby in a letter obtained by ESPN: “Your Petition — filed three business days before the deadline, without any supporting information or documentation, and only after abandoning your recent litigation efforts to avoid NCAA sanctions — does not provide a basis for the League to alter those plans.”

Sorsby had initially been issued a temporary injunction to clear his path to play at Texas Tech this season. But when the Big 12 filed in federal court with aims to punish Sorsby and Texas Tech, Sorsby withdrew his suit and declared for the supplemental draft. The league’s letter to Sorsby said that the “sole reasons” he sought entry in his petition were that he’d been declared ineligible. “The Petition provides no information regarding the basis for, or timing of, the NCAA’s decision,” the letter states. “Public sources, however, indicate that in May 2026 the NCAA issued a determination declaring you permanently ineligible from participation in college athletics, based on a sustained pattern of improper gambling activity during your collegiate career at three different universities.”

The letter, signed by Larry Ferazani, the general counsel of the NFL management council, adds that Sorsby’s petition does not “demonstrate accountability for your conduct or indicate whether, or how, you would adhere to the League’s rules and policies governing the integrity of competition. “Instead, even after receiving notice of the NCAA’s decision rescinding your college eligibility in May, you sought to avoid the consequences of that determination through litigation rather than accepting responsibility for your actions, and you pursued entry into the NFL only after abandoning those efforts.”

A player hasn’t been selected in an NFL supplemental draft since 2019. Sorsby would potentially be able to play in the CFL. He’s currently ineligible to play collegiately under NCAA rules. “As Commissioner Goodell has emphasized, participation in the NFL is a privilege that carries with it significant responsibilities, including accountability,” Ferazani says in the letter. “By all accounts, you are a talented player with the potential for future success. We encourage you to focus on preparing for possible entry into the NFL through the 2027 NFL Annual Draft.” Sorsby was ESPN’s No. 1 player in the NCAA transfer portal this offseason, and his admission to gambling and subsequent trip to an in-house treatment facility loomed as the biggest football story of the offseason. The NFL source added of Sorsby’s late filing: “It’s an avoidance of that distraction [to teams] caused by his own timing.”

Taylor University Baseball Collects School-Record Five CSC Academic All-America Honorees The Taylor University baseball program placed a school-record five student-athletes on the 2026 Academic All-America® baseball teams announced Tuesday by College Sports Communicators (CSC), the most CSC Academic All-America selections in any sport in school history. The five honorees led the NAIA and topped every NCAA division as well. First-team recognition went to Sam Gladd, Ben Kennedy and Fletcher Roemmich, while Jake Boyer and Nathan Frady earned second-team honors. The group anchored a Trojan squad that finished as the 2026 NAIA national runner-up with a program-record 56 wins. The five selections break the previous high of four in a single sport, total TU athletics had reached four times: women’s track and field/cross country in 2025, men’s at-large in 2023, football in 2015 and women’s track and field/cross country in 2012. The latest CSC Academic All-America recognition continues a sustained run of classroom success across the department. TU athletics has produced double-digit CSC Academic All-America selections in four of the past five years. Baseball has now landed at least one Academic All-American in five straight seasons, with multiple selections in four of them.

Boyer, a senior finance major, became the fifth player in TU baseball program history to earn multiple CSC Academic All-America honors after earning a second-team nod last season. He picked up another CSC All-America honor with a cumulative GPA of 3.87 in his final campaign. The right-hander was a key reliever for the No. 1-ranked Trojans this season, earning Crossroads League Pitcher of the Week twice. Boyer led the team in saves (5) and tied for the team lead in wins (8-2) and appearances (22). The Fort Wayne native recorded 55 strikeouts and just six walks in 47.1 innings. Gladd, a senior exercise science major, earned his first career CSC Academic All-America recognition with a cumulative GPA of 3.88. After being tabbed as an NAIA Preseason All-American selection, the designated hitter went on to earn First-Team All-Crossroads League honors and a spot on the NAIA World Series All-Tournament Team. Gladd smacked 10 home runs and 10 doubles with a .315 batting average and 54 RBIs. The Columbia City native finished his career ranked second all-time in TU baseball history for most home runs (46).

Kennedy, a senior majoring in human physiology and preventative medicine, received his first CSC Academic All-America honor with a cumulative GPA of 3.68. The shortstop posted a career season, earning Second-Team All-Crossroads League recognition and was twice named the CL Player of the Week. Kennedy tallied 12 home runs, with four of those during a six-game stretch in postseason play. The Evansville native tied for the team-lead in doubles (19) and triples (3), while hitting .366 overall with 64 RBIs. Roemmich, a senior also majoring in human physiology and preventative medicine, garnered his first career CSC Academic All-America award with a cumulative GPA of 3.95. Hitting leadoff for arguably the nation’s best offense, Roemmich earned First-Team All-Crossroads League honors and posted career numbers while hitting .347 with 11 home runs, 13 doubles and 62 RBIs. The Elmhurst, Illinois native broke the TU single-season record for most runs scored (85). At one point, Roemmich had reached base safely in 61 consecutive games dating back to the 2025 season. Frady, a junior politics and law major, earned his first CSC Academic All-America recognition with a cumulative GPA of 3.95. The right-hander was selected First-Team All-Crossroads League and picked up one CL Pitcher of the Week award as the primary reliever on the top-ranked Trojans. The Bloomfield native made four appearances in six games at the NAIA World Series. Frady finished the year 6-1 with a pair of saves, totaling 58.2 innings of work, 52 strikeouts and 3.53 earned-run average.

The 2025-26 Academic All-America® Baseball Teams, selected by College Sports Communicators, recognize the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances on the court and in the classroom. The CSC Academic All-America® program separately recognizes honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA. Mississippi State’s Noah Sullivan, Dagen Brewer from Pittsburg State University, The University of Olivet’s Bryan Carney, and Alex Johnson of Concordia University, Nebraska were recognized as the Academic All-America® Team Member of the Year award winner for their respective divisions.

The Trojans have piled up several awards and honors for the 2025-2026 year. The Division I Cabinet approved the change from the longstanding tenet of college sports that gave athletes five years to complete four seasons of competition with their eligibility clock starting at the time of enrollment, regardless of age. The move will all but eliminate waivers or resdhirt years for extended eligibility except for religious missions, maternity leave or active-duty military service. No longer will extensions be considered for athletes who are injured. The rules are set to take effect this fall. Division I includes more than 350 schools, some 200,000 athletes and, with football and basketball leading the way, is by far the most lucrative of the three in the NCAA.

The five-in-five language also is included in Senate legislation intended to address numerous concerns across college sports and comes after a wave of lawsuits from athletes seeking to extend their college careers and ability to earn money through revenue sharing and name, image and likeness deals. Still to be seen is whether the new rules will withstand legal scrutiny alongside the existing challenges. Heisman Trophy runner-up and Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia remains the lead plaintiff in a lawsuit challenging an NCAA rule counting seasons spent at junior colleges against players’ Division I eligibility time. That case is slated for trial in February. “I wouldn’t say that the rule change itself will slow lawsuits down,” said Sam Ehrlich, a Boise State assistant professor of legal studies in business and management who tracks litigation against the NCAA. Ehrlich said athletes very well could continue to petition courts for extended eligibility based on antitrust arguments, but appellate courts recently have delivered wins for the NCAA by overturning preliminary injunctions in several cases.

The new eligibility model will affect all athletes who enroll in 2027-28. Currently enrolled athletes with eligibility after the 2025-26 academic year, and those who are incoming freshmen this fall, can apply the age-based model or continue under previous eligibility rules. For schools with current athletes who may be eligible for hardship waivers or extensions of eligibility under current rules, the D-I Cabinet indicated the deadline to submit requests to the NCAA is July 31. After that date, waivers would no longer be available.

Attorney Mit Winter, who specializes in sports law, has called the five-year proposal and age limit “a very sensible rule” in offering a “more black and white” evaluation to player eligibility, particularly for schools navigating a complicated waiver process determined on a case-by-case basis.
