Smulders is the eighth signee of the program’s 2026 class alongside Elle Obenour, Helen Grahe, Jessie Mauro, Elise Eves, Gabriela Garayo Aranceta, Karly Redman and Agustina Gamonal. Smulders will arrive in Bloomington in August. She is a goalkeeper and is from Bilthoven, Netherlands. She attended school at Het Nieuwe Lyceum and played club for SCHC and coaches Arnoud Boersma and Albert-Kees Manenschijn. In the 2023-24 season while playing for the U16 team of her club, she conceded the least number of goals of all goalkeepers and had seven consecutive clean sheets. Her club team was ranked in at least the top four in the Netherlands in every season and included a second-place finish at the U14 and U18 National Championship Final. In U16, her team reached the semifinals. In indoor play, her U16 team made the quarterfinals and for U18 indoors, they made the semifinals. At IU, she is leaning toward majoring in criminal justice but is not sure yet. Her parents are Juliette Piree and Peter Smulders. She has two siblings in Rutger and Carlijn Smulders. Why She Picked IU: “I really like everything I’ve read and heard about IU and Bloomington, and the academics seem strong as well. I also really like the coaching staff, and I think playing in the Big Ten is an amazing opportunity to continue competing at a high level in field hockey.”

Indiana University Men’s Basketball Unveils the Uniforms they will Wear in Peru for the FISU America Games Indiana basketball will be sporting a new look in Peru later this month. And the computer model doesn’t see Indiana as the most likely team to win what would be a repeat national title. In fact, FPI says five teams have better championship odds that the Hoosiers. Here are the top six: 1. Ohio State, 2 Texas, 3. Notre Dame, 4. Oregon, 5. Georgia and 6. Indiana. FPI represents how many points above or below average a team is. Ohio State’s FPI score is 28.7, while Indiana is 23.1. FPI becomes the basis for ESPN’s week-by-week game predictions. The model predicts IU will win 10.1 games, has a 9.5% chance to go 12-0, and a 99.4% chance to win six games to become bowl eligible. FPI says IU has an 18.7% chance to win the Big Ten, a 57% chance to make the College Football Playoff, a 12.8% chance to reach the national title game, and a 6.6% chance to repeat as champions.

Indiana’s strength of schedule is ranked No. 33 by FPI. 10 Big Ten teams have more difficult schedules. Like most people, the preseason edition of the model has been way off vis-a-vis the Hoosiers recently. Here’s where IU was ranked by FPI ahead of the last two seasons: 2024: No. 77 overall / No. 18 Big Ten 2025: No. 31 overall / No. 8 Big Ten. Here is where every team on Indiana’s 2026 schedule is ranked based on FPI: North Texas (90), Howard (N/A), Western Kentucky (86), Northwestern (60), at Rutgers (67), at Nebraska (30), Ohio State (1), at Michigan (15), Minnesota (63), USC (13), at Washington (26) and Purdue (71).

Here are Big Ten Power rankings based on FPI: 1. Ohio State (1), 2. Oregon (4), 3. Indiana (6), 4. USC (13), 5. Michigan (15), 6. Penn State (17), 7. Iowa (25), 8. Washington (26), 9. Nebraska (30), 10. Illinois (39), 11. Wisconsin (43), 12. Northwestern (60), 13. Maryland (61), 14. Minnesota (63), 15. UCLA (64), 16. Michigan State (65), 17. Rutgers (67) and 18. Purdue (70).

FPI was developed in 2013 as a way to measure team strength and predict game and season outcomes going forward. ESPN says FPI is “a measure of team strength that is meant to be the best predictor of a team’s performance going forward for the rest of the season. Projected results are based on 20,000 simulations of the rest of the season using FPI, results to date, and the remaining schedule.

There are four components to the preseason rating: prior performance, returning starters, recruiting rankings and coaching tenure. Here’s how ESPN describes each: Prior performance is built off the framework of expected points added. The most recent year’s performance is by far the most important piece of information powering preseason FPI, but three more years are added to measure consistency and account for outliers in performance. The most recent year counts almost twice as much as the three years before it. Returning starters on offense and defense, with special consideration given to starting quarterbacks or transfer quarterbacks with starting experience, is the second piece of information powering preseason FPI. Because starters interact with other inputs, it’s not as simple as saying an extra returning starter is worth one point. Nonetheless, a starting quarterback is worth about 3.3 points per game to a team returning an average offense (all else equal), and a transfer quarterback is given half the weight of a starter.

FPI uses four recruiting services ESPN, Rivals, Scouts and Phil Steele to measure the talent on a team’s roster and add an additional piece of information about which teams are on the rise. The addition of recruiting has been a controversial piece of FPI, but it’s worth noting that it is a very minor component that helps with prediction accuracy. Coaching tenure is primarily a way to capture the addition of a new head coach. With all else equal, a team’s predictive offensive, defensive and special team’s ratings will regress slightly to the mean with the addition of a new coach.

The Indiana Pacers Win their Las Vegas Summer League Opener Against the Cleveland Cavaliers The Indiana Pacers were back in action on Friday as the Blue and Gold opened Las Vegas Summer League action against the Cleveland Cavaliers. Indiana opened its Summer League slate with a win, 99-93. Taelon Peter and Jalen Slawson served as veterans in the Pacers’ starting five, Braden Smith and Tamin Lipsey joined forces in the backcourt, and Rienk Mast rounded out Indiana’s starting lineup. Indiana was loose with the basketball early in the contest and committed six first quarter turnovers. Cleveland leveraged those extra possessions into a lead after the first quarter of action, 13-10. The Pacers recovered in the second quarter as they settled in and found a rhythm. Indiana logged 32 points in the second frame as Taevion Kinsey caught fire from deep. Smith broke a press in the backcourt in the final 30 seconds of the half and darted a pass under the basket to Kinsey, who was fouled. Kinsey knocked down his free throw – one shot worth two points – and the Pacers led, 43-41 heading into the halftime break. “We’re fast and unselfish, and we’re doing some good things right now,” coach Rick Carlisle said of Indiana’s Summer League showing.

Kinsey was a spark off the Indiana bench in the first half as he shot 3-for-3 from deep and led the Blue and Gold in scoring with 11 points. Mast recorded nine points and eight rebounds. Slawson executed a volleyball spike of a block early in the third as he rejected Riley Minix’s shot. He then converted a free throw, swiped a steal, and completed an alley-oop pass to Peter for the slam. The second-year player exhibited a sturdy grasp on the pace of the NBA game in Indiana’s Summer League opener. The Pacers pulled away in the third quarter and led heading into the fourth, 75-56. Meleek Thomas, Cleveland’s 34th overall pick, came to life in the fourth quarter. Thomas had 10 points in the frame with five minutes to go, and the Cavaliers cut into Indiana’s lead. The Pacers led by four points with under four minutes to play. Mast drove hard to the rim in the waning minutes of the fourth and converted a layup through a foul. Indiana led by six following Mast’s made free throw, and Peter hit a dagger 3-pointer to seal the win for the Pacers with under a minute left, 96-89.

Indiana had five double-digit scorers in the victory – Keion Brooks Jr. (11), Peter (13), Mast (16), Kinsey (16) and Slawson (15). Smith struggled to find his shot early in the contest, but found a groove in the second half. He finished with five points, eight rebounds, and four assists. Mast recorded 11 rebounds alongside his 16 points. “[I] try to help the team win,” Mast said postgame. “…I’ve got to do my job; I’ve got to work hard.” Thomas finished with 20 points for Cleveland, as did Nae’Qwan Tomlin. Braden Smith, Indiana’s No. 38 overall pick, recorded five points, eight rebounds, four assists, and three steals in his Summer League debut. Rienk Mast, former Nebraska Cornhusker, recorded a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Jalen Slawson recorded five blocks. The Pacers recorded 21 assists on 31 made field goals.

Indianapolis Indians Take Down the Toledo Mud Hens 6-3 at Victory Field Jhostynxon Garcia and Termarr Johnson each hit two-run home runs, in the third and eighth innings, respectively, as the Indianapolis Indians defeated the Toledo Mud Hens, 6-3, on Friday night at Victory Field. The Indians (10-6, 41-50) opened with four runs in the first three frames. Garcia plated the first of the game with a bloop single in the first inning. With two outs in the third, Ronny Simon started a rally with a single and stole second base, his 24th swiped bag of the season. Enmanuel Valdez crushed a double off the wall for a 2-0 lead and Garcia hit a towering ball down the left field line to break it open, 4-0. Toledo (9-7, 43-47) turned things around with three runs in the seventh inning, cutting the deficit to one run. Max Clark hit his eighth homer of the season, a two-run shot, and Gage Workman hit a sacrifice fly. The Mud Hens offense for the night ended there. Johnson then blasted a baseball for two insurance runs in the eighth. Jaden Woods started a bullpen game for Indy and tossed 2.0 scoreless frames with four strikeouts. Derek Diamond (W, 2-0) then followed with 2.0 shutout stanzas and Nick Dombkowski tossed the next 3.0, allowing three runs. Justin Meis blanked Toledo in the eighth inning and Beau Burrows (S, 5) recorded the final three outs to seal the win. Troy Watson (L, 3-3) allowed four runs across 5.0 innings for Toledo.

Ball State’s Scheumann Stadium to Serve as Site for Historic Monon Bell Football Game Between DePauw and Wabash For the first time in 104 years, the football rivalry between DePauw University and Wabash College will be played at a neutral site as the 132nd game in the series and 94th for possession of the Monon Bell will be contested at Ball State’s Scheumann Stadium on Saturday, Nov. 14, 2026, with kickoff slated for just after 1 p.m. The venue change is necessitated by the demolition of DePauw’s Blackstock Stadium and the construction of the Blackstock Stadium and Athletics Performance Center which will open in fall 2028.
