Smith handled pre-game, halftime, and post-game radio duties for IU football and men\u2019s basketball from1983 to 2023.\u00a0 He stayed through 2023 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Don Fischer\u2019s play-by-play career.  The news was confirmed by IU, and in a statement from his radio station in Bloomington.  \u201cJoe touched people in the way great broadcasters do, by being there again and again and again. For almost 60 years Joe answered the bell in Bloomington, and never once cheated his listeners. He was a miracle of consistent professionalism and boundless joy,\u201d the statement said.  \u201cHe never took being on the radio for granted and embraced every opportunity to bring listeners into an event through his energy and precise description of every play.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Smith was the sports director of WGCL-AM 1370 in Bloomington, now 98.7 The Zone. He was in his 57th overall year of radio broadcasting. He began his career in 1969 at WAIK Radio in Galesburg, Ill. From 1973-89, Smith worked on \u201cRFD4 Agri-Business Show\u201d on WTTV-4 with the late Bob Cook. In 1998, Smith was named Indiana Sportscaster of the Year; in April 2003, he was inducted into the Indiana Sportswriters\/Sportscasters Hall of Fame; and in Aug. 2021, he was welcomed into the Monroe County Sports Hall of Fame.   Smith handled the IU TV Warmup Shows from 1978-82 and hosted several IU Coaches Shows from 1983-96 and again from 2002-04.  He received the J.W. Bill Orwig Medal that goes to non-alumni for distinguished service to the University in June 2004. In March 2020, Smith was given the IU Bicentennial Medal by President Michael A. McRobbie, awarded to organizations and individuals who, through their personal, professional, artistic or philanthropic efforts, have broadened the reach of Indiana University around the state, nation, and world. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Record 119 Indiana University Hoosiers Make the Big Ten Distinguished Scholar List<\/strong> \u00a0                                                                                                                     The Big Ten Conference announced Monday that\u00a01,912\u00a0students on varsity rosters have earned the Big Ten Distinguished Scholar Award. The list includes students from all 18\u00a0institutions, plus Johns Hopkins and Notre Dame and 41\u00a0sports who have recorded a minimum grade-point average (GPA) of 3.7 or higher for the\u00a0previous\u00a0academic year.\u00a0  The 2025-26 class of Distinguished Scholar Award Recipients includes\u00a0344<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>students who\u00a0maintained\u00a0a perfect 4.0 GPA during the\u00a0previous\u00a0academic year, represented in bold on the official list.\u00a0A school record 119 Indiana University student-athletes from earned Big Ten Distinguished Scholar honors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I am incredibly proud of the dedication shown by our record-breaking group of 119 Big Ten Distinguished Scholars this year,&#8221; said IU Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics\u00a0Scott Dolson. &#8220;Achieving this level of academic success while competing at the highest level of collegiate athletics is a testament to the commitment, work ethic, and focus of our student-athletes. Volleyball-Ella Boersema, Avery Daum and Luca Fickell. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Indiana University Volleyball&#8217;s Sade Illawole and Jaidyn Jager along with Head Coach Steve Aird to Appear at Big Ten Media Days in Chicago\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0                                         A trio of Hoosiers will join the rest of the conference to kick start another anticipated season of volleyball in the Big Ten. The network studios will play host to the fifth-annual Big Ten Volleyball Media Day on Monday, August 3rd in Chicago, featuring appearances from coaches and student-athletes of all 18 schools.  Head coach\u00a0Steve Aird\u00a0will be joined by junior setter\u00a0Sade Ilawole\u00a0and sophomore outside hitter\u00a0Jaidyn Jager\u00a0as representatives of Indiana. The Hoosiers are coming off a record-breaking 25-win season and a trip to the NCAA regional semifinals for the first time in 15 years. Both players will be team captains during the upcoming campaign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jager was one of the standout freshmen in a league full of talented newcomers in 2025. She finished second on the team with 383 kills (3.39 per set) and led all Hoosiers with 249 digs (2.20 per set). On the year, Jager was the only freshman in the country to finish with at least 380 kills, 200 digs, 50 blocks and 30 aces. Of returning conference players in 2026, she brings back the sixth-most kills (383).  Ilawole has played every role that the Hoosiers have asked of her over two seasons. She has appeared in 27 career matches and has tallied 31 assists and 54 digs during her time in Bloomington. After being a unanimous team selection, Ilawole will serve as a team captain for the second-straight year in 2026.  Aird and his student-athletes will spend the day going through select media stations. Featured stops will include a press conference, a live studio hit with BTN hosts, photo shoots and sit-down interviews. The conference will host a dinner for coaches and players following the day&#8217;s proceedings. IU&#8217;s full team will gather the next day (August 4) to begin official fall practices in Bloomington.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Indiana University Wrestler Hunter Sturgill Takes Silver at U20 Pan-American Championships<\/strong>                                                                                                    Indiana Wrestling&#8217;s\u00a0Hunter Sturgill\u00a0competed and became a silver medalist in the U20 Pan-American Championships on Saturday. Sturgill competed in the Greco-Roman division at 72 kg for the USA. After winning his opening couple matches, Sturgill defeated Jostyn Salvatierra of Ecuador in the semifinals to advance to the championship bout.  He faced Jorge Gomez Garcia in the finals but lost the match. Despite the loss, Sturgill went home on the podium and with a silver medal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Indiana University Baseball&#8217;s Hogan Denny Scores a Run as Team USA Beats Japan <\/strong>                                                                                                             Highlighted by four hitless innings out of the bullpen by\u00a0Easton Hawk, the Collegiate National Team (2-0) defeated Japan (1-1) 3-2 on Monday afternoon at Intercontinental Stadium at the World Collegiate Baseball Championship in Taichung City, Taiwan.  The U.S. plated all three of its runs in the second and third innings, but Japan slowly chipped away by scoring in the fourth and sixth innings to make it a one-run game. Hawk was backed by the timely hitting early on and strong defense through the final frames. He took over in relief in the sixth inning with runners at the corners and no outs and managed to retire all 16 batters he faced while picking up the save.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Team USA plated a pair of runs in the second to get ahead early in the contest.\u00a0Nico Partida\u00a0and\u00a0Kolby Branch\u00a0led off with back-to-back outfield singles and started the threat when\u00a0Anthony Pack Jr.\u2019s sacrifice bunt moved them into scoring position.\u00a0Ryker Waite\u00a0delivered with an infield single to bring home Partida, and\u00a0Derrick Pitts\u00a0followed up with another run-scoring single to plate Branch.  The stars and stripes extended their lead to 3-0 in the third thanks to Pack Jr.\u2019s sacrifice fly to left field. Pack Jr. scored\u00a0Indiana Hoosier Hogan Denny\u00a0after he reached on a fielder\u2019s choice, advanced to second on Partida\u2019s single, and to third on Branch\u2019s walk to load the bases. Denny went 0-5 at the plate with a run scored and started in Left Field.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Japan got on the board in the fourth thanks to Takara Yamasoto\u2019s RBI single to eft field with runners in scoring position. With the bases loaded on one out, Waite caught a line drive and doubled up the runner at second to end the side.  Japan made it a one-run game in the sixth. Back-to-back singles by Kai Watabe and Yoshinobu Kuroda started the side, and Yamasoto tallied his second RBI of the game with a sacrifice fly to center field to score Watabe.  Hawk kept Japan at bay after it scored its second run of the game with his dominant performance of four hitless innings, allowing the U.S. to come away victorious. The win snapped a seven-game loss streak against Japan.  Pitts turned in a three-hit game to lead all players, while Partida tallied two hits in the contest. Five other players contributed to the 10 hits Team USA had in the game, marking the second consecutive game with double-digit hits.  Jackson Sanders\u00a0was credited with the win after surrendering one run on three hits in 1.2 innings pitched, while Hawk picked up the save.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Former Indiana Hoosier Kyle Schwarber falls to the Final Round of the Major League Baseball Home Run Derby to Jordan Walker <\/strong>                                       Jordan Walker&#8217;s breakout season may have hit a new high in the Home Run Derby on Monday.\u00a0 Despite entering with the third-longest odds to win it, Walker epically took the Derby, beating the\u00a0Phillies&#8217;\u00a0Kyle Schwarber\u00a012-11 in the final round at Citizens Bank Ballpark.  Walker became the first Cardinal to win the event while silencing Phillies fans who thought Schwarber would run away with the title.  They were cheering every time a Walker ball did not leave the park. They booed everyone except Schwarber and\u00a0Bryce Harper.  &#8220;I was once told you don&#8217;t boo nobodies,&#8221; Walker said. &#8220;So, it feels pretty good.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Cardinals star needed to hit six home runs in a row, with just one swing left, and did just that.  He hit three home runs in the bonus round to clinch the victory.  Hitters can keep swinging until they make an out on their final attempt.  &#8220;He earned it,&#8221; Schwarber said.  Walker tied\u00a0Willson Contreras\u00a0for the lead with 13 home runs in the first round before hitting six home runs on eight swings in the semifinals, advancing while still leaving seven swings on the board.   The Cardinals star used an Iron Man-themed bat for the Derby, and he&#8217;s enjoying a career-best season after struggling to begin his career. The 24-year-old is hitting .294 with 22 home runs and 74 RBI, and he has helped guide the Cardinals to a surprising 50-45 start despite low expectations.\u00a0Walker&#8217;s breakout campaign comes just a season after he hit a woeful .215.  &#8220;That was impressive,&#8221; Schwarber said. &#8220;That was impressive what he did.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Indiana Pacers fall to the Toronto Raptors in the NBA Las Vegas Summer League <\/strong>                                                                                                                     The Indiana Pacers dropped to 1-2 in Las Vegas Summer League on Monday despite their rally from down 18 points early in the contest, 94-93.\u00a0Alex Reese and Taevion Kinsey joined Braden Smith, Taelon Peter, and Jalen Slawson as Indiana\u2019s first five on Monday.  Taelon Peter opened the scoring with a strong drive and dunk at the rim, but Toronto responded with an 11-0 run to take a nine-point lead less than three minutes into the contest. Indiana crawled back into it before the buzzer, but still trailed by 10 after the first quarter.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rienk Mast came off the Pacers\u2019 bench to lead the Blue and Gold in scoring through the first frame \u2013 he notched seven points and two rebounds in his initial seven minutes. He knocked down his second 3-pointer of the afternoon midway through the second quarter as he brought the Pacers back within five points of Toronto\u2019s lead, 39-34.\u00a0 Mast drilled his third triple of the contest to give the Pacers their first lead since they led 2-0 in the first quarter.\u00a0After trailing by as many as 18 points, Indiana was tied with Toronto at halftime, 45-45. The Pacers outscored the Raptors 29-19 in the second quarter to knot the game before the halftime break. Mast led the Blue and Gold with 13 points and six rebounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Indiana fought through a tightly contested third quarter, but entered the fourth trailing, 70-69.\u00a0The Pacers recaptured the lead just 90 seconds into the fourth as Gabe McGlothan converted a tough layup to put Indiana ahead of Toronto, 73-72. McGlothan took a fastbreak pass from Braden Smith on the following possession and knocked down a triple that forced a Raptors timeout.\u00a0 Allen Graves minimized Indiana\u2019s four-point lead with just under four minutes to play as he connected from 3-point range for Toronto. The Pacers led, 87-86, heading into crunch time.\u00a0Slawson drove from the wing and detonated on the rim as he threw down a dunk to put Indiana up five points with two minutes to play, 93-88. Seth Lundy responded from range for the Raptors, however, and Toronto was back in it, 93-91.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Untimely Pacers fouls allowed the Raptors to go up a point at the free throw line, but Indiana had 12.5 seconds on the clock and possession of the basketball. Smith drove to the block, faked a shot, and dumped a pass off to Mast. Mast went up for the game-winner, but found Lundy, who blocked his shot into the backcourt. Indiana fell to Toronto, 94-93.\u00a0\u00a0Mast recorded his second double-double of Summer League with a game-high 23 points and 10 rebounds, while Smith notched a game-high nine assists. Slawson also eclipsed the 20-point mark as he scored 21 points to go along with his eight rebounds. Lundy led the Raptors in scoring with 22 points and two steals.\u00a0 The Pacers return to Summer League action this afternoon as they take on the Minnesota Timberwolves at 3:30 PM ET which is 12:30 PM Las Vegas Time. Indiana shot 39 percent from the field, including 26 percent from 3-point range.\u00a0The Pacers forced 21 Toronto turnovers.\u00a0Rienk Mast led all scorers with 23 points.
