Indiana University Football Coach Curt Cignetti has heard the whining and complaining from the SEC hype machine<\/strong> Indiana coach Curt Cignetti likes to poke the SEC. A year ago, the former Alabama assistant coach mocked their eight-game conference schedule.\u00a0 The SEC changed that a month later. With a 38-3-win Indiana over Alabama at the Rose Bowl and a third straight Big Ten national title since that comment, this year Cignetti has the bully pulpit. He targeted what has at times seemed like incessant yapping by leaders from the SEC.\u00a0 Cignetti slipped in his latest jab from the podium at Big Ten media day in Chicago on Thursday. \u201cThe Big Ten is the best league in football, and a lot of really good football teams, it\u2019s hard to win on the road, very physical football teams, very well-coached,\u201d he said.\u00a0 \u201cIt definitely prepares you for the playoffs. There\u2019s no doubt about it, the numbers speak for themselves. We don\u2019t run a hype machine up here in the Midwest.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cignetti\u2019s remark was in response to a question \u2014 whether the grind of the Big Ten schedule prepares teams for the postseason. He knew what was really being asked. \u201cI think that\u2019s a loaded question,\u201d he began in response. But the hype machine in the South had Cignetti riled up. At his own media day this month, SEC commissioner Greg Sankey touted the league\u2019s move to nine conference games this year, without mentioning it came 10 years after the Big Ten went to nine. \u201cWhen you look at our schedule, no one has created the kind of weekly competition that exists in the Southeastern Conference,\u201d Sankey said. \u201cIt\u2019s competition that our fans will experience every week because we believe we\u2019re the best conference in college football.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the numbers support Cignetti at the moment. The three straight national titles headline the argument in favor of the Big Ten. But there\u2019s more. Earlier this week Big Ten commissioner Tony Petitti noted the conference\u2019s 11 wins by seven different teams in the 12-team CFP era over the past two years, noting that is \u201cmore than double the next best league.\u201d Last season, the Big Ten went 11-5 in bowl games while SEC went 4-10.\u00a0 The Big Ten is 8-2 in bowl games against the SEC during the 12-team CFP era. Those are fairly convincing numbers. The rest is just Southern talk. \u201cWe believe everything is earned, not given,\u201d Cignetti said. \u201cWhen we fall short, we say: We fell short. We don\u2019t cry a river, whine and complain. That\u2019s why we\u2019re the best.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Indiana University Volleyball’s Talented Sophomores Named to the All-Big Ten Preseason Team<\/strong> As the 2026 volleyball season inches closer, the conference office released its All-Big Ten Preseason Team and Preseason Poll on Thursday afternoon. Each of the league’s coaches submitted a ballot to pick this year’s preseason honors. Defending conference champions Nebraska were a unanimous first place choice by all 18 coaches. Indiana, one of five Big Ten teams to make last year’s NCAA regional semifinals, is represented by a pair of talented sophomore standouts. Outside hitter\u00a0Jaidyn Jager\u00a0and setter\u00a0Teodora Krickovic\u00a0were named to the All-Big Ten Preseason team. In total, nine teams earned a nod on the list with eight programs placing multiple players. Nebraska and Purdue led the way with three selections each.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Krickovic is fresh off of winning a silver medal with Serbia at this summer’s CEV U22 Women’s European Championships. She contributed 10.73 assists per set (1,212 overall) in 33 matches last year. The young setter added 201 digs, 54 kills, 50 blocks and 38 aces. As a team, IU hit .281 with Krickovic running one of the nation’s fastest offenses. One of the main benefactors of IU’s fast offense last season was Jager. She blossomed into an elite six-rotation player and finished second on the team with 383 kills (3.39 per set). The young California native led the program with 249 digs (2.20 per set). Jager was a Second Team All-Big Ten selection and returns the sixth-most kills of any Big Ten player this season. As a team, IU was picked sixth by the league’s coaches. Nebraska, Wisconsin, Penn State, Purdue and Minnesota combine to make up the top five of the preseason poll. The Hoosiers will begin their 2026 campaign with a trip to perennial power Louisville on Friday, August 28th.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Edgewood Graduate Luke Hayden Picks Up his Third Win of the Season for the Dayton Dragons <\/strong>Dayton starting pitcher and Edgewood HS Graduate Luke Hayden struck out a career-high eight batters and combined with two relievers on a six-hit shutout as the Dragons defeated the Quad Cities River Bandits 3-0 on Wednesday night. The win was the sixth shutout victory of the season for the Dragons but their first since May 23. John Michael Faile and Peyton Stovall each hit solo home runs for the Dragons. Hayden looked dominant from the beginning. He started his outing with back-to-back strikeouts, using fastballs in the 96-98 mph range to get ahead in the count, and then utilizing his change-up to end the at-bats. He had at least one strikeout in every inning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

John Michael Faile gave the Dragons the lead in the top of the third with a home run to right field, his second homer in two games in the series and his fourth of the year. In the sixth, Peyton Stovall launched a home run to right field, his ninth homer of the year, to make it 2-0. Meanwhile, Hayden reached his pitch limit in the bottom of the sixth and left the game with one out and runners at first and second. Victor Diaz replaced Hayden and retired the next two hitters to work out of the mild jam. Hayden finished his night working five and one-third innings, allowing three hits and no runs with two walks and eight strikeouts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Diaz pitched a scoreless seventh inning before allowing the first two batters in the eighth to reach base. Trent Hodgdon replaced him and notched two straight strikeouts and a grounder to the mound that ended the inning. The Dragons had added a single run in the top of the eighth, keyed by a hit by Julio Carreras and an infield single by Victor Acosta that brought in the run. Hodgdon worked the bottom of the ninth, allowing a pair of singles in the inning that brought the tying run to the plate, but he got a game-ending strikeout, his fourth in two innings, to record his seventh save. The Dragons finished with six hits. Carreras went 2 for 4.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Detroit Tigers call up Franklin High School Graduate Max Clark following a strong July<\/strong> Former Franklin Community High School baseball superstar and the No. 3 overall pick in the 2023 MLB Draft, Max Clark, is heading to the big leagues. Clark was drafted by the Detroit Tigers right after his senior year of high school at just 18 years old and has spent his last three summers climbing the minor league ranks. This season in Triple-A with the Toledo Mud Hens, Clark is batting .276 with a .368 on-base percentage, along with 11 home runs and 42 RBI. Through July, Clark has found his stride. Clark is hitting .338 this month with five home runs and a 1.086 OPS. After his monster month at the plate, Detroit decided to bring the 21-year-old to the show. Clark is one of baseball\u2019s most talented prospects, ranked No. 13 overall by MLB. Clark will join a Tigers team that is 51-58 on the season and is 4.5 games behind the Cleveland Guardians for the final Wild Card spot. Clark is an outfielder who primarily plays center field. The Franklin product made his MLB debut Friday Night in a road game against the Athletics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NFL FLAG Championships draw record crowd to Westfield<\/strong> One of the nation\u2019s fastest-growing sports wrapped up a record-setting weekend. The NFL FLAG Championships brought a record crowd to DROPLIGHT Grand Park and record viewership over the three-day tournament (July 24-26). More than 45,000 fans made their way to DROPLIGHT Grand Park and reached a record 14.3 million fans across the 30 televised games. The third annual tournament featured the nation\u2019s top Boys\u2019 Under-14 and Girls\u2019 High School teams, as well as an international division for the first time. Viewership increased by more than 50 percent from last year. On Championship Sunday, the Girls\u2019 High School Championship averaged a record 1.12 million viewers, a 46 percent increase from last year. The Girls championship was the most-watched NFL FLAG game in history. The Boys\u2019 Under-14 Championship game averaged 631,000 viewers. Over 350 teams from across the globe traveled to Westfield for the championships. It was the first time the NFL Flag Championships were in an NFL club market, which was partnered with the Indianapolis Colts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Indiana Pacers announce return of iconic gold pinstripe uniforms for upcoming season<\/strong> The Indiana Pacers announced Thursday the return of the iconic gold pinstripe uniforms, a throwback jersey made popular during the Reggie Miller era. The classic pinstripe uniform was first introduced in 1997 and will return to the hardwood once again for the 2026-2027 season. The new statement edition threads host a gold base with black pinstripes and dark blue lettering. \u201cGold has always signaled the biggest moments in Pacers basketball,\u201d the Pacers said in a\u00a0statement. \u201cNow it takes center stage on a new Statement Edition, bringing with it the return of an icon. The pinstripes that defined one of the greatest eras in franchise history are back, reimagined for today\u2019s team and the next generation of Pacers basketball. A new statement, built from an unmistakable part of who we are.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The throwback uniforms will also pay tribute to the late Bobby \u201cSlick\u201d Leonard and will include his iconic \u201cBOOM BABY\u201d catchphrase at the bottom of the jersey. The Pacers fan favorite coached the team from 1968 through 1980 and worked for the team as a radio analyst from 1985 to 2021. The new uniforms hit the market on September 1. Taylor University Men\u2019s Basketball Set to Host Elite Prospect Camp<\/strong> The Taylor University men’s basketball program is set to host an elite prospect camp inside Odle Arena on Saturday, September 19. The camp is open to boys entering grades 9 through 12, and will take place from 1:00 pm until 5:00 pm, with check-in for the camp beginning at 12:30 pm. The total cost for the camp is $95 per participant, each of whom will receive top-notch instruction from the TU coaching staff, along with demonstrations from TU players and the opportunity for five-on-five live competition. Participants will receive a tour of campus, including Taylor\u2019s athletic facilities.
