Indiana Hoosiers Women’s Volleyball is Featured in the Preseason AVCA Rankings<\/strong>   With just over a week until the start of the 2026 season, the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) unveiled its preseason top 25 rankings. Head coach Steve Aird’s Indiana squad was picked 16th by the voting coaches, the first time the program has opened the season in the national polls. During its record-breaking campaign in 2025, IU was ranked on 10 different occasions. That includes finishing the season ranked 13th nationally during its run to the regional semifinals. This is just the 15th week in program history that the Hoosiers have made the national poll. The Hoosiers are set to play 10 of the teams in this year’s preseason rankings. That includes top-10 non-conference tilts against Louisville (Aug. 28) and Texas A&M (Sept. 2). No. 1 Nebraska, No. 9 Purdue and No. 10 Penn State will all visit the friendly confines of Wilkinson Hall in the upcoming campaign. IU will begin its season at No. 7 Louisville on Friday, August 28th. It’s the earliest match of a season in program history where both IU and its opponent are ranked at the same time. Aird and his group will see three of the nation’s 22 best programs in the first two weeks of the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Indiana University Cross Country Announces the 2026 Season Schedule <\/strong> Indiana cross country head coach\u00a0Eric Heins\u00a0announces the Hoosiers’ 2026 cross country schedule including one home meet at the Sam Bell Cross Country Course and three road races before postseason competition. The Hoosiers will begin their season in Bloomington, Ind. on Sept. 4th<\/sup>\u00a0as they host the Sam Bell Invitational. Indiana will travel to their first away meet as Indiana State will host the John McNichols Invitational on Sept. 19th<\/sup>. The Hoosiers will take a week off from competition before heading north to South Bend. for the Notre Dame Joe Piane Invitational on Oct. 2nd<\/sup>. The cream and crimson will then travel back to Terra Haute, Ind. for Under Armor Pre-National Meet, Hosted by Indiana State on Oct. 16th<\/sup>\u00a0at the LaVern Gibson Championship XC Course. Up next, the Hoosiers will Begin postseason competition at the University of Wisconsin as they will host the Big Ten Championships on Oct. 30tht<\/sup>\u00a0from the Zimmer Championship Course in Madison Wisc. Following the conference championships, the NCAA Great Lakes Regional will be held in East Lansing, Mich. at the Forest Akers Golf Course on Nov. 13th<\/sup>. \u2018Whatever It Takes\u2019 \u2013 Aiden Sherrell Brings Winning Edge to the Indiana Hoosiers Men’s Basketball Team <\/strong> Aiden Sherrell rocks a Cook Hall practice like a kid celebrating Christmas, which means he’s having the time of his life cutting, hustling, defending and, yes, long-range shooting when he isn’t imposing his in-the-paint will. Watch the third-year forward move like a wing with the 6-foot-11, 255-pound frame of a center and imagine the possibilities. Imagination kicks in during Indiana workouts, during the 98-64 exhibition win over Team Canada, and then during the gold-medal-winning effort at the FISU American Games in Peru. It will surface again when the season begins, and this former Alabama standout shows what he can really do now that the days of a center-heavy Crimson Tide load have become Hoosier power-forward possibilities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I can do pretty much everything,” Sherrell says from the Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall locker room. “I’m very versatile. I can play inside, play outside. I can guard multiple positions.” If that sounds bold, Sherrell’s play backs it up. He proved it while totaling 16 points, six rebounds, and three blocks against Team Canada, which led coach Darian DeVries to say, “We want him to be that guy that just does everything. Get him to be in that position where he’s got the ball a lot on the perimeter; he’s got the ball inside; he can take advantage of mismatches. “I think you saw a little bit of it. He had a little fader in the paint. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He had a couple of 3s. He had a couple of blocks. There’s really not a lot he can’t do. “Our thing for him is just to be that dominant guy every night. That’s what we’re challenging him to be, is every night out we know that we’re going to be able to rely on him. He’s done such a great job and working incredibly hard at putting time into his game. And he’s grown a lot even from June till now. It’s fun to watch him approach it that way.” More fun came in Peru. Sherrell earned tournament most valuable player honors while totaling 58 points, 31 rebounds, seven blocks, and six assists. He shot 61.5% from the field and made 3-of-9 3-point attempts during Team USA’s four blowout victories. Even more impressive, that was in limited minutes because team dominance allowed DeVries to play younger players for long stretches. Through it all, Sherrell’s fitness stood out. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I think Aiden looks terrific,” DeVries says. “Give a big shout out to our strength and conditioning staff (led by head strength and conditioning coach Ryan Horn) for putting him in a really good spot, and also give a lot of credit to Aiden. He’s really made it a priority. “He’s got himself in great shape. He’s running well. He feels healthy. That’s a big part of it, too, and you can see it on the floor.” What you’re seeing, DeVries adds, is Sherrell becoming more comfortable in IU’s system. “He’s going to continue to grow in his confidence in the things we want him to do. We want him to have the ball. We want him to be versatile. We want him to showcase all his skill sets. “He did a great job of that (in Peru). He didn’t get a ton of time. We limited him in a lot of the second halves, but the minutes he had out there, he was incredibly productive.” <\/p>\n\n\n\n

That Sherrell plays forward rather than center isn’t a big deal, he adds, because he played it in high school. “I’m pretty used to it.” Then there’s this \u2026 “I’m just a guy who does whatever it takes to win.” Sherrell has done a lot of college winning. Alabama won 53 games during his two seasons there, including a run to the 2025 Elite Eight. Last year, Sherrell averaged 11.1 points, 6.2 rebounds, 2.2 blocks, and 1.1 assists while shooting 53.9% from the field. He ranked No. 2 in the SEC and No. 13 nationally in blocked shots. Sherrell twice blocked eight shots in a game, against Clemson and Arizona, and had 76 overall. For comparison, forward Sam Alexis led IU with 38 blocks last season. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Hoosiers had 86 as a team. Sherrell made a big jump from his freshman season in which he averaged 3.4 points and 2.8 rebounds. Is another big jump coming? Why not? “I’m willing to do whatever it takes to win,” he says. “Whatever is required, I’m going to do that.” Sherrell made 41 3-pointers at Alabama. He seems capable of more in DeVries’s free-flowing system. “It definitely helps me showcase my game a lot more and show what I have,” Sherrell says. “There are some things I showed flashes of at Alabama. With the confidence my coaches and teammates are giving me, I’m going to go out there and show that.” Second-year forward Trent Sisley vouches for Sherrell’s all-court potential. “His ability to stretch the floor as a big is important,” Sisley says. “He can pop out, hit shots and knock down three balls, but he can also punish mismatches down low. It’s just his versatility. Defensively, he’s really good, too.” <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is what DeVries saw when recruiting Sherrell. “There’s a lot there,” he says. “He can shoot. He can put the ball on the deck, so, he’s going to give us that spacing. It’s a little bit different than maybe what we had, but I also think that his ability, when he gets switches, he’s going to be able to take guards down into the post and really make you second-guess whether you want to switch or not, but he still creates enough of the spacing that we want to make sure that we have driving lanes and post-up opportunities.” Sherrell, a McDonald’s All-American coming out of Florida’s Prolific Prep High School, began his basketball journey in Detroit. He left for Florida just before entering high school. “I grew up on the east side of Detroit,” he says. “I went all the way to middle school. My brothers went to high school in New Haven (Michigan). I did my eighth grade-year there. As soon as I got to high school, I left the state of Michigan.” Sherrell says it was hard to leave his hometown, his parents and his friends, “but I had to take a risk. I want this. I want my life to be like this. I want to play basketball at a super high level. I’ve got to do whatever it takes. “At the end of the day, it worked out. I’m grateful for that.” <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sherrell was considered one of the nation’s top prospects coming out of high school, and then when he left Alabama. “A lot of schools reached out,” he says about deciding to transfer, “but most of the process was taking a lot of phone calls and having a lot of meetings. Ultimately, I came to this decision because I feel like this is a great place for me.” What was Sherrell looking for? “A place that was going to help me be the best player I could be, on and off the court. I was looking for a spot that was going to push me to play outside of my comfort zone and continue to build me as a player and help me reach my goals.” Sherrell says DeVries’s main recruiting pitch was what Sherrell could bring to the team. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The way he told me, giving me a role to have a lot more impact on the game, I appreciated that. It was mutual, for sure.”\u00a0Impact includes tapping into his experience.\u00a0“Definitely leadership, I can bring that a lot here,” Sherrell says. “We’ve got a lot of young guys. I can help teach them the ropes. I’ve got teammates who came from programs that didn’t get to win enough. Helping them to bring what it takes to win — that leadership and continuous effort.”\u00a0As far as his impressions of DeVries, Sherrell says his coach is “super, super serious. Really basketball oriented.\u00a0“When he talked to me about coming here, it was all basketball. It was all focused-on basketball. That’s something that I appreciated. He’s trying to make me better on the court and as a young man.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Indiana University Swimming and Diving Unveils the 2026-27 Season Schedule<\/strong> The Indiana swimming and diving program on Tuesday announced its schedule for the 2026-27 season. Indiana will host three regular season home meets inside the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center. The Hoosiers will welcome Texas and Northwestern in its home opener October 9. USC and Kentucky will visit the CBAC on October 23, and IU will open the spring portion of its season January 8 against Michigan. IU will compete in the College Swimming League’s (CSL) inaugural season during the fall portion of its campaign. The neutral site, swimming-only meets will include two matches \u2013 September 24 against Louisville, Michigan and Ohio State, and October 16 versus Cal, NC State and Stanford \u2013 as well as wild card (Nov. 5) and championship meets (Nov. 6).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Indiana will split its squad for midseason. Swimmers will return to the Ohio State Invitational November 17-20, while the divers will travel to the highly competitive Tennessee Diving Invitational November 18-22. Ahead of championship season, IU will test itself in two road meets: at Purdue on January 23 and at Louisville on January 29. The 2027 Big Ten Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships will run February 17-20 in Iowa City, Iowa. The men will look to defend their five consecutive conference titles one week later, February 24-27, with location to be announced. Austin, Texas, will host both the women’s and men’s NCAA Championship meets March 17-20 and March 24-27, respectively. \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stephanie White details how the Indiana Fever have dealt with the outside noise this season<\/strong> The Indiana Fever have dealt with a lot of distractions this season. On Saturday alone, Caitlin Clark picked up her eighth technical foul, which would have caused her to miss a game. That technical has later been rescinded. Plus, Chicago Sky guard Dijonai Carrington committed a flagrant 2 foul on Sophie Cunningham in transition, with Carrington\u2019s left arm making contact with Cunningham\u2019s face. Despite all of the outside noise, the Fever have the best record in the Eastern Conference (20-12) and the fourth best record in the WNBA. Fever head coach Stephanie White shared what her and the team have learned about trying to minimize the distractions and just focus on basketball.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u2019re not going to ever minimize it,\u201d White said. \u201cNothing that any one of us does is ever going to please everyone all the time. I hope that the biggest thing that we learn is how to be responsive instead of reactive in certain situations. I think it\u2019s really easy, especially for young people or for those who aren\u2019t in it every day to react to everything that happens. It\u2019s also dangerous to react to everything that happens. I think just from a humanistic perspective and life lesson perspective, I think our group does a really good job of responding. I think our group does a really good job of pouring into one another, of keeping the main thing the main thing, of understanding that there are a lot of folks out there who want to divide us. That there are a lot of folks out there who want to create more challenges for us. In our locker room we do a really good job of keeping that outside the locker room and pulling for one another. You guys see it, the vibes are always pretty good in here. I\u2019m proud of them for that and I think outside of even just the sport and outside of the job it serves great life lessons for us as well.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite Tyrese Haliburton’s return the Indiana Pacers’ Christmas snub continues<\/strong> The return of All-Star\u00a0Tyrese Haliburton\u00a0to a team that still includes most of the key pieces from the 2025 Eastern Conference champions wasn’t enough to get the\u00a0Pacers\u00a0a slot in one of the prime dates in the NBA’s early-season television calendar. The NBA is rolling out its schedule this week and started on Tuesday, announcing its season-opening nationally televised games and its Christmas Day games. The\u00a0Pacers\u00a0were not part of the Christmas Day schedule and have been kept off of that marquee date since 2004, the third-longest drought of any NBA team behind the\u00a0Sacramento Kings\u00a0who haven’t played on Christmas since 2003 and\u00a0Charlotte Hornets, who have never played on the holiday. The Pacers are also not part of the collection of games that will be nationally televised in the season’s opening days. The full schedule was released at 3 p.m. on Thursday. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The regular season opens on Tuesday, Oct. 20 with three games televised on NBC and Peacock including two featuring Eastern Conference teams, but not the Pacers. The\u00a0Celtics\u00a0and\u00a0Pistons, who posted the two best regular-season records in the East, will play in\u00a0Detroit\u00a0at 3 p.m. The defending NBA champion\u00a0Knicks\u00a0host the\u00a076ers\u00a0— who added stars\u00a0LeBron James\u00a0and\u00a0Jaylen Brown\u00a0in the offseason — at 7 p.m. The Spurs host the Thunder in a Western Conference Finals rematch at 9:30 p.m. ESPN will show nationally televised games on Oct. 21 and 22. The Heat, who traded for\u00a0Giannis Antetokounmpo\u00a0in the offseason, host the\u00a0Timberwolves, who added\u00a0LaMelo Ball, at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 21. The Warriors play the\u00a0Lakers\u00a0in\u00a0Los Angeles\u00a0at 10 p.m. that night. The 76ers host the\u00a0Cavs\u00a0at 7 p.m. on Oct. 22 and the Thunder host the Nuggets at 9:30 p.m. that night. Prime gets its first games on Oct. 23 as the Celtics host the Knicks at 7 p.m. and the Spurs host the Rockets at 9:30 p.m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Christmas Day schedule opens with an NBA Finals rematch between the Spurs and Knicks at Madison Square Garden at noon. The Celtics host Antetokounmpo and the Heat at 2:30 p.m. James and the 76ers visit the Lakers in Los Angeles at 5 p.m. The Thunder face the Timberwolves in\u00a0Minnesota\u00a0at 8 p.m. and the Nuggets face the\u00a0Golden State Warriors\u00a0in San Francisco at 10:30 p.m. All games will be televised on ABC and ESPN. The Pacers reached their first NBA Finals in 25 years in the 2024-25 season but lost to the Thunder in seven games with Haliburton tearing his right Achilles tendon in Game 7. He missed all of the 2025-26 season as the Pacers finished 19-63, the worst record in franchise history. However, the Pacers acquired center\u00a0Ivica Zubac\u00a0in February and wing\u00a0Kelly Oubre Jr.<\/a>\u00a0in July and return most of the key pieces from the Finals squad, so they have realistic hopes of returning to title contention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

‘Doing some due diligence’ Chicago Bears chairman shares update on Indiana stadium efforts<\/strong> \u00a0 As the Chicago Bears begin preparing for the upcoming NFL season, all eyes remain on the team’s search for a\u00a0new stadium site in Indiana. Bears Chairman George McCaskey spoke brief with the media, including\u00a0NBC 5 Chicago, on Monday as the team gathered for a walk-through practice. The Bears have said they remain focused on efforts for a new stadium in Indiana, and McCaskey told reporters there could be new information coming out soon about the location of the proposed project. “We’re doing some due diligence on a second site in Hammond,” McCaskey told reporters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As 13News and NBC 5 Chicago have previously reported, after a so-called “PILOT” bill failed to pass the Illinois General Assembly before the end of the legislative session, the Bears announced they were focusing their stadium efforts on northwest Indiana. In early June,\u00a0Indiana Gov. Mike Braun asked Hoosiers to help him “welcome the Chicago Bears to our great state!”\u00a0after the team’s board of directors voted to advance its stadium development project in Hammond. “Barring anything very strange, it’s a done deal,” one source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter at the time. Indiana officials have promised up to $1 billion and several other incentives to convince the team to move across the border and build a new stadium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NBC Chicago\u00a0reported in July that the Bears were looking at a site known as Wolf Lake Terminals in Hammond, which is located just east of the Illinois-Indiana state line. “I\u2019d say we\u2019re in the red zone. I\u2019ve done so much real estate in my career. Until you ink it, it\u2019s not done, but it\u2019s moved a long distance in a short period of time,” Gov. Braun said during a recent event at Valparaiso. On Monday, McCaskey was asked if there was any movement in Illinois, with the team still owning property in Arlington Heights. “No,” he responded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
