\u2018\u2018Coming Closer\u2019 \u2013 Progress Continues as Indiana University Football Builds Towards Season Opener<\/strong> Football practice is over, work is not. Charlie Becker catches passes from a jugs machine in the Mellencamp Pavilion, ignoring the distraction efforts of fellow Indiana receiver Tyler Morris. Balls are fired at Becker from close range. Each time, Morris flashes a white towel across his face just as the ball arrives. Becker catches everything, sometimes even parts of the towel. Later, another receiver works on his one-hand catching skills, because you never know when that might play a crucial role as IU prepares for its quest to repeat as national champion. A few minutes later, head coach Curt Cignetti addresses the media in the Don Croftcheck Team Room on Merchants Bank Field at Memorial Stadium. Shortly after that, the Associated Press preseason poll is released, listing the Hoosiers at No. 6, the same position as the earlier coaches\u2019 poll. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Weeks away from the Sept. 5 season opener against North Texas and Cignetti remains focused on achieving top offensive and defensive form. \u201cAs a team, we\u2019re making progress,\u201d he says. \u201cEvery practice is a little cleaner. Guys are coming closer to meeting the bar play in and play out from an assignment-effort standpoint. They\u2019re finishing plays, but still a way to go. \u201cWe\u2019re not completely done with our installation. We still have a number of situations to practice before the first game, but we\u2019re on track.\u201d The defense had the edge over the offense last spring, and in some ways, still does. \u201cIt\u2019s gone back and forth,\u201d Cignetti says. \u201cIt\u2019s been pretty good competition. They\u2019ve both had their moments. \u201cOne thing about the defense, because we\u2019re deep on the defensive line, when the twos (reserves) go, we\u2019ve got young (offensive) linemen against older guys, but that\u2019s going to happen during the season if one of those guys has to step in. \u201cI\u2019d give defense the edge, but that\u2019s been pretty much the case every year I\u2019ve been a head coach since 2019 on. The defense has been ahead of the offense.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Receiver looms as a team strength with Becker and Nick Marsh, a Michigan State transfer, leading the way. The 6-foot-4, 207-pound Becker\u2019s strong final two months last season left with him 34 catches for 679 yards and four touchdowns. The 6-foot-3, 213-pound Marsh totaled 100 catches for 1,311 yards and nine touchdowns in two Spartan seasons. \u201cMarsh has made some really nice plays in fall camp,\u201d Cignetti says. \u201cHe made a great catch in the scrimmage. He\u2019s a big, long, strong guy. He\u2019s good after the catch. \u201cHim and Becker are two long guys who have a good track record. Now it\u2019s developing No. 3, 4 and 5 in that receiver room.\u201d That would include Morris, a Michigan transfer who missed all of last season with a knee injury, Tulane transfer Shazz Preston, second-year players Davion Chandler and Lebron Bond, and fifth-year player Jackson Wasserstrom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTyler Morris had a family situation and missed the scrimmage,\u201d Cignetti says, \u201cbut he has had his moments. He can play inside and outside. \u201cDavion has made good progress recently. He\u2019s got a lot of talent. He can play inside and outside. \u201cAfter that, we have to figure it out. Shazz Preston has talent, but he has to be locked in assignment wise and do the right thing, play in, play out. He can help us if he can do that. He missed the first three to four practices with a hip. He\u2019s gotten on the field recently. He\u2019s made some nice plays, but we have to eliminate the (missed assignments) with him. \u201cLebron Bond and Jackson Wasserstrom pretty much round out the group.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last Saturday\u2019s first camp scrimmage delivered \u201csome good, bad and ugly\u201d moments, Cignetti says. \u201cThere weren\u2019t quite as many penalties as there normally are or turnovers, but still a lot to clean up in terms of assignments and getting guys to do what they’re supposed to do.\u201d Overall, Cignetti adds, the Hoosiers have more depth than last year, impressive given their final 16-0 record, \u201cbut still, there are areas where we have to develop players. We might be counting on some younger guys at certain spots to fill in depth.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That includes the offensive line, with players such as Adedamola Ajani, Austin Leibfried, Matt Marek, Baylor Wilkin and Sam Simpson positioned for significant action. \u201cThose young guys like Ajani, who has started a game or two and probably played in five to seven games in competitive situations,\u201d Cignetti says, \u201cand then Leibfried, Marek, Wilkin and Simpson, a true freshman who has done a nice job. I\u2019m probably forgetting somebody, but those are the guys next in right now.\u201d Fifth-year player Bray Lynch has taken over the center position from the departed Pat Coogan, now a rookie with the NFL\u2019s Tennessee Titans, although fellow veteran Drew Evans also has taken snaps there as well as others as offensive line coach Bob Bostad works to develop depth. \u201cBray has been taking 90 percent of the reps with ones (starters) at center,\u201d Cignetti says. \u201cEvans has played left guard. \u201cBob is always moving guys around because you can never have enough guys who can snap the ball. We probably work four or five guys at the center position because you can\u2019t get a play off if you can\u2019t snap the ball. Bray has done a nice job and so has Drew playing left guard.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHe loves the game\u201d: Indiana University Football Linebacker Rolijah Hardy staying humble amid All-American talk<\/strong> There may be no player on the Indiana roster who better epitomizes the staff\u2019s eye for talent. Coming out of his senior year at Lakeland H.S. (Lakeland, Florida), linebacker Rolijah Hardy was unranked and had no FBS offers. He had caught the eye of defensive coordinator Bryant Haines, but high school injuries left head coach Curt Cignetti wanting to see more. And so began a staggering three-year progression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Year one \u2014 Hardy plays at Naval Academy Prep and does enough to earn an offer from Cignetti.  He commits to IU in May of 2024. Year two \u2014 As a freshman in 2024, Hardy earns a role as Indiana\u2019s third linebacker playing primarily against two tight end personnel. Year three \u2014 Hardy started all 16 games for the national champion Hoosiers, leads the team in tackles, and earned second-team All-Big Ten honors.  His break-up of a late fourth quarter pass may have been the difference in Indiana winning the Big Ten championship game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And now entering his third of five seasons of college eligibility? Hardy is on several preseason All-American teams as he charts a course towards the NFL.  That\u2019s quite a ride since he committed to IU just over two years ago. After scratching and clawing just to be noticed, he knows better than to start patting himself on the back. \u201cI appreciate the recognition, but it is all preseason stuff,\u201d Hardy said earlier this month.  \u201cSo, you just try to take that, use that as confidence that you have that ability and then just going from there for the season.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are still questions surrounding Hardy\u2019s linebacker room heading into 2026. One of the biggest losses from the championship roster was Aiden Fisher, the team\u2019s leader on defense.  Part of the challenge for Hardy this year will be proving there will be no drop-off at linebacker after Fisher went to the NFL. \u201cAiden is a great player and I definitely learned a lot from him, the past two years,\u201d Hardy said. \u201cHe was a great leader. That leadership role between me and Isaiah [Jones] has to be bigger this year. Also, making more plays without him out there. Someone has to make those plays, so it may as well be me and [Isaiah] at the linebacker position.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now behind what many believe is one of the nation\u2019s best defensive lines, Hardy has an opportunity to put up massive numbers as his confidence peaks. Cignetti is reluctant to praise his players publicly.  Perhaps concerned they\u2019ll become complacent, he often defaults to saying a player is good but has to become more consistent. But in part because of the player Hardy has already become, and also because of how the linebacker is wired, the head coach isn\u2019t afraid to heap on the praise. \u201cHe\u2019s got instinct, initial quickness, explosiveness, ability to run,\u201d Cignetti said Monday.  \u201cHe loves the game. He\u2019s got really good ball skills. Early on in his career he had some nice interceptions. He\u2019s got a nose for the football and he\u2019s just a really good player. \u201cI\u2019ve mentioned a few other times before, in the big games he plays really well.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There\u2019s data to back up Cignetti\u2019s contention. In Indiana\u2019s early season defining win at Oregon, Hardy had 13 tackles.  He had 12 at Penn State and 10 more against Ohio State. The sky\u2019s the limit for Hardy this season, but he doesn\u2019t look at it that way.  And of course, that\u2019s part of the reason he has been so successful to this point under Cignetti.  He sounds like a player fully bought in to the program culture. \u201cI always try to stay levelheaded. I try to stay humble,\u201d Hardy said.  \u201cI try to just go day-by-day with how I do things, try to be that same person that I came in as \u2014 just someone that\u2019s going to work hard, stay levelheaded, and just put in work.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Indiana’s Collins Oduro an Early Candidate for the Nation\u2019s Top Soccer Honor<\/strong> Indiana men’s soccer forward Collins Oduro was one of 27 players featured in the 2026 MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List, United Soccer Coaches announced on Wednesday. The Hermann Trophy is presented annually by the Missouri Athletic Club and is the nation’s highest individual honor recognizing the National Player of the Year as determined by voting of Division I head coaches who are members of United Soccer Coaches. It is named in honor of the late Robert Hermann, the legendary St. Louis, Mo., businessman and soccer executive who founded the National Professional Soccer League, the first pro soccer league in the United States which became the North American Soccer League. He was inducted in the U.S. Soccer Hall of Fame in 2012.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 2026 watch list was compiled by members of the Division I Men’s All-America Council from a list of returning 2025 All-Americans and First Team All-Region players. A total of 15 players will be named 2026 Hermann Trophy semifinalists on December 4 at the conclusion of NCAA Division I All-American voting. From that list, head coaches will cast votes, and three players will be named finalists. The 2026 recipient will be announced January 8, 2027, in a ceremony at the historic Missouri Athletic Club in downtown St. Louis, Mo. Oduro enters his fourth year at Indiana, where he has totaled 12 goals, 13 assists and 27 points. Top Drawer Soccer ranked him at No. 57 in its preseason Top 100 list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Indy Ignite growing support for youth sports with IU Health High School Match of the Week<\/strong> One of the freshest professional sports teams in the Hoosier state is continuing to commit to its investment in growing high school volleyball. On Sept. 10, the Indy Ignite will bring back its IU Health High School Match of the Week when the Hamilton Southeastern Royals take on the Fishers Tigers in Fishers. In its third year, the IU Health High School Match of the Week will be hosted by the Indy Ignite for five consecutive weeks to highlight central Indiana girls volleyball. Like usual, Ignite staff and mascot Pepper will be at the games to “amp up the energy level with giveaways, activations, social media engagement and more,” according to the Ignite’s press release. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Atlanta Falcons Dismantle the Indianapolis Colts 34-6 in a Preseason Game at Lucas Oil Stadium <\/strong> For the first time in more than seven months, the Indianapolis Colts returned to Lucas Oil Stadium for Indy\u2019s second preseason game. The return home meant a matchup against the Atlanta Falcons for the second of three preseason games. Quarterback Riley Leonard started the first half, and Anthony Richardson started the second half. Leonard finished 7-of-14 for 62 passing yards in a first half that was filled with penalty flags and defensive miscues. The Colts recorded five first-half penalties that cost them 66 total yards. The Colts defense allowed Atlanta quarterbacks Cooper Rush and Jack Strand to complete 14 of 15 passes for 137 passing yards. Indy\u2019s rushing defense wasn\u2019t much better. Atlanta ran for 92 yards in the first half with two rushing touchdowns. By halftime, Atlanta had a commanding 24-6 lead. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the second half, things didn\u2019t get much better for Indianapolis. Atlanta opened the third quarter with a four-play, 73-yard drive that ended in a 16-yard rushing touchdown by Strand to make it 31-6 early in the second half. In the end, Richardson finished 3-of-9 for 24 passing yards. As a team, the Colts allowed 461 total yards while recording just 164 total yards of their own. Indianapolis also finished 1-for-11 on third-down conversions. Next up, the Colts will host the Detroit Lions on Saturday, August 29, for the third and final preseason game. The Colts begin Week 1 of the regular season at home against the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday, September 13.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Indiana Fever fall to the New York Liberty on the Road <\/strong> The Indiana Fever (24-14) fell to the New York Liberty in the first game of a back-to-back. The Fever closed their five-game road on Sunday evening, facing the Chicago Sky. Indiana found themselves facing a seven-point deficit despite nine points from Kelsey Mitchell in the first quarter, down 33-26. The Fever began to cut into New York\u2019s lead, outscoring the Liberty 23-30 in the second quarter, to make it a four-point game. Despite a high-scoring third quarter for Indiana, New York was able to extend their lead once again, taking an 85-78 advantage. The Fever were able to make it a tie game with 1:45 left, but the Liberty kept Indiana from completing the comeback, holding on for the win.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The trio of Aliyah Boston, Caitlin Clark and Kelsey Mitchell recorded their ninth game in which they scored 20+ points apiece, extending their lead for the most 20+ point games by a trio in WNBA history. The game also marks the fifth time they\u2019ve done so this season, also a league record. Kelsey Mitchell extended her WNBA record for longest streak of 20+ point scoring games, doing so in her 22nd consecutive game, all this season. Kelsey Mitchell\u2019s 20+ point scoring game marked the 30th\u00a0for her this season, now in sole possession of the second-most 20+ point games in a single season in WNBA history, four off the record of 34 games set by A\u2019ja Wilson in 2024 with six games remaining.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Additionally, the game marked Kelsey Mitchell\u2019s 140th\u00a020+ point scoring game of her career, breaking her previous tie with Lauren Jackson for the 10th\u00a0most in WNBA history. With 25 points tonight, Kelsey Mitchell has now scored 937 points this season, tying A\u2019ja Wilson for the third-most points in a single season in WNBA history. Kelsey Mitchell recorded her 53rd\u00a0consecutive double-digit scoring game, tying A\u2019ja Wilson for the 12th\u00a0longest streak in WNBA history. With her three pointer at 6:35 in the third quarter, Caitlin Clark moved into fourth in franchise history for three pointers made, passing assistant coach Briann January (242). Clark now has 243 made three pointers in 87 games played. With four assists, Kelsey Mitchell eclipsed 900 assists, just the third player in franchise history to do so, joining Tamika Catchings and Briann January. The team scored 100+ points for the 17th\u00a0time this season, extending their record for the most 100+ point games in a single season in WNBA history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Indy Eleven Take Down their Rivals Louisville City FC <\/strong> Indy Eleven midfielder Jack Blake scored his 45th USL Championship goal to give the Boys in Blue a 2-1 victory over Eastern Conference rival Louisville City FC in front of 9,542 fans at Carroll Stadium. Captain Aodhan Quinn started the game-winning sequence with the match tied 1-1 in the 60th minute, creating some space in the midfield to curl a through ball between two defenders to Blake.\u00a0 Blake played a quick touch to forward Edward Kizza who gave it right back and Blake took a touch to his right to create space for a 25-yard strike that tucked inside the left post.\u00a0 It is Blake\u2019s franchise-best 29th Indy Eleven goal, his third in USL-C play this season, and the fourth in all comps in 2026.\u00a0 Kizza recorded his second assist of the campaign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bruno Rendon put the Boys on Blue on top in the 31st minute off an assist from Quinn.\u00a0 Midfielder Cam Lindley started the play by sliding to deflect a pass in the center circle to Quinn.\u00a0 Off the bounce, Quinn one-timed a through ball to Rendon on the right side.\u00a0 Rendon headed it down and with a defender closing on him, fired a sharp-angle shot low and hard inside the far post to give his team a 1-0 lead.\u00a0 It is Rendon\u2019s team-high eighth goal in USL-C play and his 10th in all competitions this season.  It is Quinn\u2019s team-best fourth assist in league play, his fifth in all comps in 2026, and the 65th of his USL Championship career.  He is now one assist behind all-time leader Kenardo Forbes (66).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Boys in Blue goalkeeper Eric Dick matched his season high with seven saves to increase his career total to 307 in USL-C regular-season play, good for 18th on the league all-time list. Indy Eleven takes its two-game winning streak to Phoenix Rising FC on Sat. August 29 at 10:30 p.m. ET on ESPN+.
