They\u2019re back (again) \u2014 New court order restores eligibility for Indiana University Football\u2019s Stephen Daley and Kellan Wyatt<\/strong> Guess who\u2019s back, back again. Stephen Daley\u2019s back. And Kellan Wyatt. According to a report by Pete Thamel, Indiana\u2019s star edge rushers are both cleared to play against North Texas on Saturday. \u201cAn Indiana circuit court has issued a temporary restraining order for NCAA eligibility that includes Indiana defensive stars Stephen Daley and Kellen Wyatt, per me and Mark Schlabach,\u201d Thamel wrote on X Friday afternoon. Daley and Wyatt were initially cleared to play by a federal injunction that broadly covered all class of 2022 athletes, but the NCAA obtained a stay on that injunction until its appeal could be heard. That procedure caused them to lose their eligibility \u2014 until Friday. The Indiana temporary restraining order clears Daley and Wyatt, at least at the moment. But like safety Louis Moore\u2019s case a year ago, the pair will have to contend with legal matters during the season. A hearing for a temporary injunction for the plaintiffs is set for Sept. 11.\u00a0 While they\u2019re eligible for the moment, the temporary injunction would put Daley and Wyatt on more solid footing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The legal wranglings come after the NCAA did not extend its new five-year eligibility rule passed this summer to members of the class of 2022 who had just exhausted their eligibility in four years in the 2025-26 academic year. The NCAA\u2019s primary reason for not allowing class of 2022 members like Daley and Wyatt to play fifth years was a concern about taking away opportunities from younger players. IU coach Curt Cignetti took that concept head on a couple weeks ago. \u201cI think in their case, you\u2019re creating opportunities,\u201d Cignetti said. \u201cYou look at Wyatt, started less than half the games last year and got hurt. Then Daley stepped in, started six out of 16 games and got hurt. Both had pro potential but because of injury didn\u2019t end up in NFL camps. \u201cWe\u2019d have to make no roster cuts if they\u2019re eligible to play.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

IU swimmers Owen McDonald and Zal\u00e1n S\u00e1rk\u00e1ny, Indiana volleyball player Avry Tatum, Miami (and former IU) men\u2019s basketball player Malik Reneau, and Butler men\u2019s basketball player Yohan Traor\u00e9 were also included in the TRO. \u201cTo be clear, it is the Court\u2019s intention to place Plaintiffs in the position they were in at the end of their last college sports season,\u201d the filing reads. \u201cAs long as they would have been eligible, academically and otherwise, to continue playing college sports in the following semester if they had a fifth year of eligibility, they are eligible today.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Daley and Wyatt can take IU\u2019s 2026 defense from great to elite. Through the end of the 2025 regular season, Daley led the Big Ten and was tied for the national lead in tackles for loss from his defensive end position.\u00a0 He had 19 tackles for loss to go with 41 quarterback pressures, 5.5 sacks and two forced fumbles.\u00a0 He had 10 tackles for loss over the last three games of the regular season. Daley suffered a knee injury during the postgame celebration following Indiana\u2019s Big Ten Championship game win over Ohio State.\u00a0 He missed the entire College Football Playoff. Wyatt was one of Indiana\u2019s most impactful players on the defensive side of the ball before his injury.\u00a0 In seven games defensive end he had 27 tackles, including 8.5 for a loss and 2.5 sacks. Wyatt was injured in the fourth quarter of the Michigan State game last October and missed the remainder of the season. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unlike the fifth-year case that has enveloped LSU and the SEC this week, neither Daley or Wyatt were on NFL rosters during training camps nor are they looking to change schools. Both Daley and Wyatt have been practicing throughout the month of August and this week with IU.\u00a0 It is not clear whether either player has been fully cleared from a medical standpoint to play on Saturday, but both should be very close if they\u2019re not there yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Katy Zang Runs Away with Women\u2019s Race in Sam Bell Invitational<\/strong> The men’s and women’s cross country teams posted strong starts to the season as each team finished second and first, respectively, at the Sam Bell Invitational on Friday morning. The men ran the 6K race at the Sam Bell Cross Country Course led by\u00a0Tony Provenzano\u00a0in fourth with a time of 18:19.3. Dominic Ellis (18:23.3),\u00a0Alex Bruns\u00a0(18:26.5), and\u00a0Liam Bauschke\u00a0(18:28.3) followed taking fifth, sixth, and seventh, respectively. Ahmed Saleh\u00a0rounded out the scoring finishes for the Hoosiers with a time of 18:44.3 to finish 12th<\/sup>. Freshman\u00a0Katy Zang\u00a0shined in her first performance as a Hoosier. Her time of 12:36.2 earned first place and also set a Sam Bell 4k course record, finishing nearly a minute ahead of the competition. Maddie Rocchio\u00a0(13:46.1) and\u00a0Lily Myers\u00a0(13:48.9) each earned third and fourth place finishes, respectively. They were followed by newcomers\u00a0Jasmine Martoglio\u00a0(14:01.5; 6th<\/sup>) and\u00a0Lucinda Rourke\u00a0(14:05.0; 7th<\/sup>) to round out the top-five finishers for Indiana. Indiana will train for two weeks before heading to Terre Haute, Ind. for the John McNichols Invitational on Saturday, September 19th<\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Indiana University Women’s Volleyball Takes on Tennessee and Southern Indiana <\/strong> The rapid start to the season for the 21st-ranked Indiana volleyball team (2-1, 0-0 B1G) will come to a close this weekend. The Hoosiers will play the final games in a five-game stretch away from home to start the year with contests in Nashville (No. 22 Tennessee) and Evansville (Southern Indiana). It will end a run of five games in four different cities across the Midwest since August 28th.\u00a0IU will be the Big Ten representative in the second-ever Sprouts Farmers Market Broadway Block Party at Bridgestone Arena. Its game against No. 22 Tennessee (3 p.m. ET \u2013 ESPN2) will be the second game of an elite doubleheader in Nashville. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The two teams are playing for the first time since IU won a NCAA second round game against Tennessee in 2010.\u00a0Following a win over No. 12 Texas A&M on Wednesday at Mackey Arena, the Hoosiers will be looking to win consecutive ranked matchups for just the second time in program history. It’s the third-straight contest against an SEC team. Of the top six projected teams in the SEC preseason poll, IU will have played three of them by the end of this week.\u00a0Third-year opposite hitter Ella Boersema will look to continue her hot week. She had a career-high 21 kills in the win over Texas A&M and hit over .530 across seven sets at the Big Ten\/SEC Challenge in West Lafayette. Her and second-year outside hitter Jaidyn Jager each had at least 12 kills in every game this week.\u00a0First serve from Nashville will come at 3 p.m. ET this afternoon. Following the game against Tennessee, IU will drive to Evansville to prepare for a Monday’s contest with Southern Indiana. That game against the OVC foe will be the last game away from home before opening the campaign at Wilkinson Hall against Cal Poly on September 10th. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Win over Tennessee Be the third-straight win over an SEC program to start the season and the second-consecutive win over a ranked team. It would also put IU in a great position for another at-large bid to the tournament. A win over Southern Indiana would be the third-straight win in the series since Southern Indiana transitioned to the division one level. A Win against both teams\u00a0<\/strong>Give IU at least four wins in the first five games for the second-straight year. It would put IU firmly in the top-20 of the national rankings. Indiana to feature as lone Big Ten representative in Broadway Block Party at Bridgestone Arena. IU has finished .500 or better in each of the last four seasons – the program has won 79 games since 2022. The win over No. 12 Texas A&M (Sept. 2, 2026) was the highest-ranked non-conference win in program history. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is the first time since 1987 that the Hoosiers will play at least\u00a0three\u00a0ranked opponents during the non-conference slate. It is also the first time in program history – excluding the Big Ten only 2020-21 season – that IU begins a year with\u00a0four-straight\u00a0power conference opponents in the non-conference. Third-year opposite hitter\u00a0Ella Boersema\u00a0provided\u00a033\u00a0combined kills in wins over Georgia and Texas A&M at the Allstate Big Ten\/SEC Challenge. She averaged\u00a03.67\u00a0kills per set in the win while hitting\u00a0.538\u00a0over the two games. Her\u00a021\u00a0kills against the Aggies were a career high. Second-year libero\u00a0Hannah Leftridge\u00a0won the jersey this offseason and has quietly put up great numbers. She had a career high\u00a017\u00a0digs in a win over Georgia and totaled\u00a033\u00a0digs,\u00a0eight\u00a0assists and\u00a0three\u00a0aces in total in the Big Ten\/SEC Challenge at Mackey Arena.

Fifth-year middle blocker\u00a0Kiki Granberry\u00a0spent\u00a0four\u00a0years at Tennessee where she earned her undergraduate degree. On the other side of the net, setter Mallory Matheny spent the spring semester with the Hoosiers as a prep recruit from Ohio. Head coach\u00a0Steve Aird\u00a0picked up his\u00a010th\u00a0ranked win as the Indiana coach on Wednesday against No. 12 Texas A&M. He is\u00a0three\u00a0ranked wins away from having the most by any coach in program history. He will get another shot on Sunday against No. 22 Tennessee in Nashville. Fifth-year senior\u00a0Kiki Granberry\u00a0has been the most potent blocker on the team this season. The veteran middle blocker has\u00a014\u00a0blocks in three matches this season, led by\u00a0seven\u00a0in a big win over Texas A&M. She is averaging\u00a01.42\u00a0kills per set and\u00a01.17\u00a0blocks per set on the year. Due to some player absences, second-year outside hitter\u00a0Jaidyn Jager\u00a0is taking on a big portion of the offensive load in the early goings. She is averaging\u00a03.58\u00a0kills per set while playing all six rotations. She turned up with\u00a019\u00a0kills in a big win over Georgia on Tuesday. \u00a0<\/strong>Everyone has to be ready on any given night. Third-year defensive specialist\u00a0Emma Segal\u00a0had\u00a0three\u00a0big aces in the win over Texas A&M on Wednesday night. At any point,\u00a0Steve Aird\u00a0will go to his bench to find difference makers from the service line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

#22 Tennessee (4-0, 0-0 SEC)- Tennessee defended its home court in the Big Ten\/SEC Challenge with a dominant win over Illinois on Tuesday evening. Sophomore outside hitter Kennedi Rogers is averaging 5.44 kills per set through the first four matches of the season. She is also digging 3.00 balls per set. \u2022 Fifth-year senior All-American setter Caroline Kerr is the straw that stirs the drink. She averages 11.42 assists per set. On top of Rogers, Kerr loves to pick out senior opposite hitter Jalyn Stout (3.25 kills per set). Sophomore outside hitter Maggie Dostic provides 2.30 kills per set.

Southern Indiana (2-1, 0-0 OVC)-\u00a0The Screaming Eagles will play three games in Atlanta before returning home next Monday against the Hoosiers. Senior outside hitter Asby Willis leads the teams with 54 kills over three matches (4.91 kills per set). Sophomore right side Carley Wright has been dig with 44 kills in three matches. Sophomore setter Aysa Thomas became the team’s first OVC Freshman of the Year last year. She’s started off hot by averaging 10.27 assists per set in their opening weekend. She’s added in 39 digs, nine kills and three aces in the early part of the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Inside the Series -Tennessee -The third of three contests against SEC opponents in the regular season pits the Hoosiers against the Volunteers. This game was last played in the second round of the NCAA Tournament in 2010. Until last year, that was the last time IU advanced to the regional semifinals. Jordan Haverly produced 30 kills at a .333 hitting percentage to help the Hoosiers to a five-set victory at University Gym. Southern Indiana- IU began this series in 2023 when Southern Indiana transitioned to the division one level. The two sides played in 2023 and 2024 at the Indiana Invitational with sweeps for the Hoosiers on both occasions.\u00a0Ava Vickers\u00a0and\u00a0Luca Fickell\u00a0each made their collegiate debuts in the win three years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Indiana University’s Student Athletic Board Announces 2026-27 Chairs, Directors, Committees<\/strong> \u00a0 Student Athletic Board (SAB) has announced its chairs, directors, and newly established football and men’s basketball committees for the 2026\u201327 academic year. For the first time, SAB has established committees for ticketed sports. Developed in collaboration with IU Athletics, these new director roles are designed strengthen the organization’s ability to support high-attendance events. Jada Brooks<\/a>, Student Athletic Board President, is excited about the changes and the upcoming year. “These new committees show our commitment to elevating the student experience for all 24 varsity sports,” Brooks said. “I’m excited to work alongside our directors and chairs as we build new traditions, expand student involvement, and create an environment where every Hoosier feels connected to our teams.” SAB members in their signature redcoats are excited to return to campus during Welcome Week. Caitlin Clark helps US beat China and 7-foot-3 Zhang Ziyu 94-61 in Women’s World Cup opener<\/strong> \u00a0 Caitlin Clark had 14 points and 11 assists to help the United States beat China, which was led by 7-foot-3 Zhang Ziyu, 94-61 in its women’s basketball World Cup opener Friday. Rhyne Howard also scored 14 points and Princeton, Indiana Native Jackie Young added 12 for the Americans, who have now won 31 consecutive World Cup games dating back to a loss in the semifinal game of the 2006 tournament. This a period of transition for the U.S. with a young roster that includes\u00a0the trio of<\/a>\u00a0Clark, Paige Bueckers and Angel Reese. None of them were in the starting lineup, but they were on the court together to close out the opening quarter, which the Americans dominated to go up 27-14. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

China fought back at the start of the second quarter behind Zhang. The 19-year-old, who was making her\u00a0first World Cup appearance, towered over the Americans. On defense, she stood under the basket, making it difficult for the Americans to score inside or get second shots off misses. On offense, the Americans constantly double-teamed her when she caught the ball. Zhang’s first basket of the game got China within 33-25 with 6:21 left in the half. The U.S. then went on a 16-4 run to close the first half up 49-29. Young had a three-point play and Breanna Stewart scored the final four points of the spurt. China paired Zhang with 6-10 Han Xu in the third quarter, presenting an even more potent defensive wall against the U.S. China got within 53-37, but no closer as the young trio of Clark, Bueckers and Reese helped spark a 17-5 run to close the period. Zhang finished with 13 points, hitting nine of her 10 free throws. Han added 11 points and 10 rebounds. The U.S., which is normally jeered by opposing crowds in international tournaments, had the fans backing them on Friday. Clark, who routinely spends time before games signing autographs for fans when she plays in the WNBA, signed a basketball and took a photo with a young girl who was wearing a Fever T-shirt with Clark’s name on the back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anthony Richardson wins backup quarterback job for the Indianapolis Colts as Keenan Allen stays mum on arrest<\/strong> \u00a0 Receiver Keenan Allen and quarterback Anthony Richardson tried to keep Thursday’s talk centered on football. It wasn’t easy in light of\u00a0Allen’s recent arrest on drunken driving charges\u00a0or\u00a0Richardson’s offseason trade request. Both still sound content to be with the\u00a0Indianapolis Colts\u00a0preparing for the Sept. 13 season opener against the Baltimore Ravens, even if they are playing very different roles. Though coach Shane Steichen was essentially mum on Allen’s situation, he wasted no time\u00a0declaring Richardson the top backup to Daniel Jones\u00a0for the second straight year. This time Richardson beat out Riley Leonard, who finished his rookie year by starting last season’s finale. \u201cI thought Anthony played some better ball in the preseason,\u201d Steichen said. \u201cI think both of them had pretty good camps. There are things they could both improve on, but I thought he (Richardson) did some good things in games.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Richardson’s journey with the Colts has been an arduous one. Indy took the athletic, strong-armed Florida star with the No. 4 overall draft pick in 2023, tabbing him as their future franchise quarterback. But a litany of injuries, concerns about his accuracy and the unforgettable image of taking himself briefly out of a game because he was \u201ctired\u201d prompted the Colts to sign Jones in free agency in 2025. That set up a rare training camp competition between Richardson and Jones. When Jones was declared the winner, Richardson was relegated to backup duty before suffering a freak eye injury in October that ended his season. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Richardson made two trade requests and skipped the first weekend of Indy’s offseason workouts, thinking a trade might happen on draft weekend. When it didn’t, Richardson returned for the second week of offseason team activities and has largely sounded content to play his fourth and perhaps final season with the Colts. \u201cHe\u2019ll be an Indianapolis Colt this year,\u201d general manager Chris Ballard said Tuesday when asked if he expects Richardson to be with the team this season. Richardson also said he has not spoken with his agent about the trade request recently. \u201cWhen I reported back for OTAs, you know, I was here and told myself I was going to be here and prepare myself like I was going to be here for the start of the season,” Richardson said. \u201cSo I’m still trying to do the same thing, prepare myself and get ready for Day 1.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Allen is scrambling to learn the playbook and his new teammates since signing with the Colts on Aug. 19, a move that reunited the six-time Pro Bowler with Steichen. The duo spent seven years together with the San Diego-Los Angeles Chargers. Allen was arrested early Sunday morning, the first blip on an otherwise spotless record for the 14-year veteran who holds the Chargers career record for receptions. But he did not elaborate on what happened that night or the discussions he’s had with Steichen and teammates since then. \u201cBecause it’s an ongoing legal matter, we’re not going to discuss it,\u201d Allen said. \u201cLike I said, just focusing on football and being a good team.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Steichen didn’t add much, either, merely saying\u00a0he expects Allen to play Week 1\u00a0\u2014 as Ballard said Tuesday. \u201cThere’s a legal situation going on right now, so I’m going to keep everything in house in that regard,\u201d Steichen said. \u201cI’ve got a lot of respect for Keenan, and you know I had private conversations with him. Like I said, we’ll keep that in house and keep that private.\u201d Apparently, Allen continues to debate which jersey number to wear after giving away his preferred No. 13 to Laquon Treadwell. Allen was issued No. 10 when he arrived at training camp, and it seemed like that would be the choice \u2014 until he showed up with No. 11 for Thursday’s workout. The deadline for a final choice is looming, though. \u201cI tried it (No. 11) out today, I thought it was pretty sweet,\u201d Allen said. \u201cTen looked good, too, so we’ll keep it going, probably figure it out before that (team picture next week).\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

IndyCar schedules first oval test for new chassis at Indianapolis Motor Speedway<\/strong> The new-for-2028\u00a0IndyCar\u00a0chassis, the\u00a0Dallara IR-28, will see its first official laps turned on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway oval next week.\u00a0 IndyCar said the series will hold two test sessions for the IR-28 on the IMS oval beginning Wednesday, Sept. 9 and again on Thursday, Sept. 10. The sessions run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days.\u00a0 Fans will be able to watch the sessions for free from the Turn 2 viewing mounds. IMS says free parking will be available in the Hall of Fame Museum lot and that the concession stands will be open during both days of testing.\u00a0The series\u00a0previously tested the new chassis on the IMS road course\u00a0in early August, with drivers Alexander Rossi and Alex Palou both singing its praises.\u00a0 “The presence that it has in person is pretty amazing, and it looks like it’s a big car, like a bigger car. It’s not. It just has that feel to it and is super aggressive,” Rossi said in August.\u00a0 IndyCar said one of its goals with the IR-28 is to continue to test the speed limits and hopefully break the current Indianapolis 500 speed record, which stands at 236.986 mph and was set by Arie Luyendyk back in 1996.\u00a0 As a result, the chassis is reported to be about 100 pounds lighter than the current Dallara DW12 chassis and features new front and rear wings designed to limit drag and maximize downforce on superspeedways.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
