Indiana University Volleyball Bounces Back in a Four Set Win at Southern Indiana <\/strong> To end a run of five matches in the first 10 days of the season, the 21st-ranked Indiana volleyball team rolled to its third win of the year behind a resounding 16-kill effort from third-year middle blocker\u00a0Ella Boersema. The Hoosiers shook off a tough second set to power past Southern Indiana in four (25-15, 22-25, 25-15, 25-14) on Monday afternoon in Evansville. Boersema put up her 16 kills while swinging .583 on the night. She added in a team-best five blocks while returning to her natural position in the middle for the day. Both middle blockers were in double figures as second-year\u00a0Victoria Gray\u00a0finished a kill short of her career high (11). Second-year outside hitter\u00a0Jaidyn Jager\u00a0worked back to put up 12 kills with a career-high 21 digs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even with Southern Indiana keeping IU off balance with tips over the block, second-year setter\u00a0Teodora Krickovic\u00a0ran the offense at an efficient rate. The Hoosiers hit .281 while providing 29 more kills than the hosts (58-31). She dished out 45 assists and had four digs, two aces and five kills. Third year opposite hitter\u00a0Avery Daum\u00a0got the start for the first time in her career and totaled seven kills, four blocks and two assists. Head coach\u00a0Steve Aird\u00a0purposely challenged his team with a tough schedule that included five games in 10 days \u2013 all of them away from home \u2013 to start the year. IU comes out of that stretch with three wins as it returns to Bloomington to face Cal Poly (Sept. 10) and Eastern Illinois (Sept. 11) this weekend. The Hoosiers will get four of the next six matches at Wilkinson Hall to close out September. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

IU answered the bell defensively when it mattered. The Hoosiers had an advantage in digs (67) and block (7.0-4.0). On top of Jager’s 21 digs, IU got double-digit efforts from second-year libero\u00a0Hannah Leftridge\u00a0(14) and first-year outside hitter\u00a0Sara Snowbarger\u00a0(11). Third-year middle blocker\u00a0Ella Boersema\u00a0had five blocks. When the offense got rolling, there was nothing that Southern Indiana could do. IU’s middle blockers had 27 kills combined in four sets. Each of IU’s primary attackers had seven-or-more kills while five additional from the setter made for a 58-31 advantage in the category. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Second-year outside hitter\u00a0Jaidyn Jager\u00a0had the eighth double-double of her career with 12 kills and 21 digs. It was the first of her time in college with more digs than kills. In fact, she’s the first IU player to record 20+ digs in a match since\u00a0Ramsey Gary\u00a0at Purdue (20 \u2013 Oct. 19, 2024). Third-year middle blocker\u00a0Ella Boersema\u00a0(16) and second-year middle blocker\u00a0Victoria Gray\u00a0(11) each went for double-digit kills in Monday’s win. It’s the first time since a contest against Northwestern in 2023 (Kaley Rammelsberg \u2013 15, Savannah Kjolhede \u2013 10) that IU’s pair of middle blockers have both gone for 10+ kills in the same match. \u2022 Since last Tuesday, Boersema has now had three double-digit kill efforts. That comes with her playing as both a middle blocker and opposite hitter. Her 16 kills out of the middle against Southern Indiana are the most by an IU player at the position since Kaley Rammelsberg at No. 21 Georgia Tech (16) in 2021. Second-year setter\u00a0Teodora Krickovic\u00a0had 45 assists against Southern Indiana but also recorded five kills with some great net play. In her career, IU is now 4-0 when she records at least five kills in a match. Two of those games have been in the last week (7 \u2013 vs. Texas A&M). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Indiana Hoosiers Field Hockey Records Senior Day Shutout over Central Michigan <\/strong> Indiana Field Hockey shut out Central Michigan 5-0 on Monday afternoon at Deborah Tobias Field in Bloomington, Ind. before recognizing six seniors. It improves its record to 2-2.\u00a0 The Hoosiers came out strong to start the contest with second year forward\u00a0Celia Arroyo Cabezudo\u00a0putting the home team on the board in the second minute, assisted by second year forward\/midfielder\u00a0Molly Stutte\u00a0and first year midfielder Berta S\u00e1enz de Santa Maria.\u00a0
Indiana continued to add pressure to the Chippewa defense, maintaining control of the ball throughout the first half. After the break, Indiana started the second half on a power play after Central Michigan recorded a green card to end the second quarter. To start the final half, the opposition found momentum and was able to find power in Hoosier territory but remained unable to find an opportunity to score.\u00a0 The Hoosier defense didn’t allow the opponent a shot on goal until the fourth frame, which was saved by third year goalkeeper\u00a0Sadie Canelli.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite a scoring drought for IU in the third frame, it was able to take advantage of multiple opportunities in the D. Stutte notched two goals in the fourth quarter, the second being in the 50th minute off a penalty corner.\u00a0 In the 57th minute, fourth year midfielder In\u00e9s Garcia Prado notched her first shot in the cage of the season, bringing Indiana’s final score to 5-0 to defeat the Chippewas. Six players were honored during senior day, fourth year forward\u00a0Ava Winner, fifth year forward\u00a0Karly Redman, fourth year midfielder\u00a0Javi Baeza, forth year midfielder\/forward\u00a0Theresa Ricci, fourth year back\/midfielder\u00a0Hannah Riddle\u00a0and Garcia Prado.\u00a0 It was a big game for Stutte as she recorded two goals, one assist, six shots on goal and eight total shots. It was all-Hoosier throughout the contest, recording 28 shots and 18 on goal. Central Michigan was allowed just one shot through the game.\u00a0 After today’s victory, IU is now undefeated at home.\u00a0 The Hoosiers are back on the road next weekend to face Cornell on Friday, September 11 at 1 p.m. at Buckeye Varsity Field in Columbus, Ohio. On Sunday, they are taking on Ball State in Muncie, Ind. at 11:00 a.m.in the Briner Sports Complex.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Indiana University Football Cornerbacks Jamari Sharpe and A. J. Harris \u201cday-to-day,\u201d Running Back Khobie Martin targeting midseason return<\/strong> Indiana football starting cornerbacks Jamari Sharpe and A.J. Harris are both day-to-day after suffering injuries during the first quarter of week one against North Texas. That\u2019s the good news IU football coach Curt Cignetti provided on Monday. The not so good news but not a complete loss was Cignetti\u2019s update on one of his top running backs. \u201cKhobie Martin will be out for a little bit.\u00a0 Expect him back sometime around midseason,\u201d Cignetti said Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Martin was injured while pass blocking on his second snap of the game.\u00a0 He posted a picture on social media Sunday of his arm in a sling, with his right forearm area wrapped. Indiana has depth at running back, with the roles of Turbo Richard and Lee Beebe, Jr. now likely expanded.  The Hoosiers will also take a closer look at second-year Sean Cuono and first-year Jayreon Campbell in the weeks to come.  At the very least, one of them should step into the role Martin held a year ago \u2014 the third back with relatively limited snaps when the games are close.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As was the case a year ago for Charlie Becker and Stephen Daley, injuries provide opportunities.\u00a0 That will be the case for Cuono and Campbell, and\u00a0Cignetti was already impressed by what he saw from second-year cornerback Jaylen Bell on Saturday. \u201cJaylen Bell played extensively to the field and I thought did a nice job,\u201d he said. At the very least, the staff now knows it has a fourth corner it can trust in a pinch along with Ryland Gandy, who also filled in Saturday and started a game a season ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two other anticipated contributors missed the entire game Saturday due to relatively minor injuries. Freshman defensive tackle Blake Smythe and freshman tight end Trevor Gibbs are both expected to have roles in 2026. \u201cGibbs was not available (against North Texas).\u00a0 He might return this week,\u201d Cignetti said.\u00a0 \u201cWe\u2019re going to take it slow.\u00a0 We need him long term.\u00a0 He\u2019s close to returning, as is Blake Smythe, who wasn\u2019t available for the game on Saturday.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNot who we are\u201d: Celebrate, but don\u2019t spike Indiana University Head Coach Curt Cignetti\u2019s Football<\/strong> Sophomore wide receiver Davion Chandler is making the most of his receptions so far in his young college career. He\u2019s making a bit too much of those opportunities once he reaches the end zone. The Indianapolis native has two catches for 107 yards and two touchdowns so far as a Hoosier. The 5-foot-11 and 182-pound Chandler was on everyone\u2019s radar as a breakout player in 2026, and he appears primed to make a big impact this season. That is, if he cleans up one aspect of his game. \u201cGot Davion Chandler involved,\u201d IU coach Curt Cignetti said Saturday after Indiana\u2019s 52-16 win over North Texas.\u00a0 \u201cNow he\u2019s not supposed to spike the ball. Trying to look for reasons to play him, he\u2019s giving me reasons not to. I mean, that\u2019s youth.\u201d Cignetti cracked a smile after that one.\u00a0 He\u2019s serious, but he\u2019s also sending a message. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is the 65-year-old coach really that old school? No, not really.\u00a0 For Cignetti, it isn\u2019t so much about the celebration.\u00a0 Indiana\u2019s players celebrate plenty. For him it\u2019s more about the \u201clook at me\u201d mindset he sees when players spike the ball or celebrate on their own in other ways. He\u2019s had similar issues with other players in the past, including safety Amare Ferrell\u2019s celebration of an interception against UCLA in 2024 when he ran to the end zone, and safety Louis Moore\u2019s similar celebration of his own pick against Kennesaw State in 2025. Ferrell and Moore stayed out of Cignetti\u2019s doghouse after he let them hear it, and Chandler is not likely to spike the ball again. The players come to realize their head coach wants the players to celebrate as a team rather than as individuals <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t see it, but if he spiked the ball, I could have told you Cig was going to be mad,\u201d linebacker Isaiah Jones said.\u00a0 \u201cI can tell you if anyone spikes the ball, spins the ball, does a dance, and coach Cig sees it, you\u2019re going to get it on the sideline.\u201d Cignetti did indeed talk to Chandler on the sideline after the play. \u201cI think Davion should have known that,\u201d Jones said.\u00a0 \u201cHe should know what he\u2019s going to get when Coach Cig catches him around the stadium. But, yeah, that\u2019s not what we believe in. You know, celebrate with your teammates. Celebrate with the guys that that helped you get to where you are. He wants you to celebrate with the team.\u00a0 The individual celebration \u2014 that\u2019s that\u2019s not who we are.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Breanna Stewart and Napheesa Collier spark a US bounce back routing the Czech Republic 105-64<\/strong> \u00a0 Breanna Stewart and Napheesa Collier set the tone early to help the U.S. bounce back from its\u00a0worst offensive performance in 50 years. Stewart had 11 of her 19 points in the first quarter and Collier scored seven of her 12 in the second as the Americans routed the Czech Republic 105-64 on Monday. \u201cI just wanted to be better. I just wanted to really lead by example,\u201d Stewart said. \u201cNot only just from stats, but just the way that I was communicating to my teammates. This is a big moment for all of us and we need to take full advantage of it.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stewart was coming off the worst shooting game in her stellar career for USA Basketball. She missed her first eight shots against Italy on Sunday before hitting the go-ahead basket in the gritty\u00a055-52\u00a0win on Sunday. She got going early against the Czechs and finished 8 of 11 from the field to along with seven rebounds and six assists while playing only 17 minutes. \u201cI knew the ball had to go in the basket for me, like come on,\u201d Stewart said with a smile. \u201cI was trying to get out early, rebound and run and put pressure on the rim. I thought that overall, as a team, we did a really good job of seeing the lanes that we weren\u2019t running last night and running them today.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Americans won their 33rd in a row in the tournament, going back to a semifinal loss to Russia in the 2006 World Cup. Next up for the U.S. is the quarterfinal round on Thursday. They\u2019ll face the winner of the Hungary vs. Japan game which takes place Today. Stewart had 11 points in the first 10 minutes as the U.S. jumped out to a 29-15 lead. The Americans had only 30 points in the first half against Italy. They kept it going in the second quarter behind Collier. \u201cWe weren\u2019t happy with our performance yesterday, really on either side,\u201d Collier said. \u201cSo just coming with the mindset that we\u2019re going to play as hard as we can, we\u2019re going to be aggressive.\u201d U.S. coach Kara Lawson said she just needed to remind her two veterans how good they are between the two games. \u201cThey\u2019re both complete players and there\u2019s no doubt when they\u2019re playing at a really high level our team clicks and so it was it was great to see them both come out with great aggression with great confidence. Confident in who they are and what we were doing.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Americans extended the advantage to 57-33 at the half. They weren\u2019t challenged in the second half by the Czechs as the lead ballooned to more than 40 points. Stewart finished short of her World Cup career-high of 23 points set against China in 2018. The Czech Republic finished winless in pool play. The Czechs were playing in their first World Cup since 2014. They won the silver medal when they hosted the event in 2010. In\u00a0other games\u00a0on Monday, China beat Italy; Germany topped Mali; Belgium beat Australia; Puerto Rico edged Turkey; France routed Nigeria; Spain beat Japan and Hungary slipped past Korea. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

University of Evansville Women’s Basketball Player Jordan Scott dies in car crash<\/strong> \u00a0 The University of Evansville is mourning the loss of a student-athlete who was killed in a car crash Sunday night. Wabash Valley Athletics shared the news on Monday in a\u00a0social media\u00a0<\/a>post, announcing the passing of sophomore basketball player Jordan Scott, who transferred to UE after playing a year at Wabash Valley College. The guard played in 27 games with 26 starts as a freshman for the Warriors. Sgt. Jacobs of the Warrick County Sheriff\u2019s Office told News 8 that Scott was driving on\u00a0State Road 62 near Franz Road\u00a0around 12:42 a.m. EST when she crashed into a utility pole. Jacobs describes that area of roads as \u201cvery curvy.\u201d Jacobs says one witness saw the vehicle leave the road on a sharp curve, hit the pole, and come to rest on its side in a tree line. Police say there was \u201csevere damage\u201d to her vehicle and that she died at the scene. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

She was the only passenger in the vehicle. Police believe speed played a role in the crash and believe her car went airborne. Scott graduated from Castle High School in 2025, where she earned four varsity letters under Head Coach Bobby Meier. She was majoring in Business with a minor in Sports Management at UE. According to UE\u2019s athletics website, her younger sister, Jayden Scott, also plays basketball for the university. Scott was a two-time All-SIAC first-team selection, a two-time All-State Honorable Mention pick, and a first-team All-Metro selection. She played club basketball with Swish City, Pocket City, and IGB Select 40, according to UE\u2019s athletics website. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Taylor University’s Leah<\/strong> McQuade Named Crossroads League Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week\u00a0<\/strong> Leah McQuade has been named the Crossroads League’s Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week, the league announced Monday. The weekly award is the first recognition of the season for the No. 17 Taylor women’s soccer team and the first of McQuade’s career. McQuade scored three of TU’s five goals as the Trojans posted home wins over Indiana Tech (4-1) and RV Aquinas (1-0) to improve to 4-0-2 on the season. She found the net twice against Indiana Tech, finishing with five shots, then converted a penalty kick for the lone goal against the Saints and extending the Trojans’ unbeaten streak in non-conference play to 15 matches. McQuade\u2019s five goals this season have lifted her career total to 22, and her three game-winning strikes this fall are already a single-season career high. The senior forward now has eight career game-winners as a Trojan. The honor is the seventh player-of-the-week recognition earned across TU Athletics this fall.
