The Hoosiers did manage to receive one first place vote, one of only four teams to do so. The six teams ranked ahead of Indiana in the AP Top 25 are, in order: Texas, Georgia, Notre Dame, Miami, Ohio State and Alabama. The Crimson Tide moved ahead of the Hoosiers after a 56-23 road victory over No. 17 Mississippi State. IU, however, remains at No. 5 in the Coaches Poll, with Texas, Georgia, Notre Dame and Miami ahead of the Hoosiers in that order. Other Big Ten teams ranked in the AP poll include: No. 13 Oregon, No. 19 USC, No. 20 Iowa and No. 21 UCLA. Teams in the Big Ten not ranked in the AP Top 25 but who received votes include: Wisconsin (88), Northwestern (59), Nebraska (48) and Minnesota (19). All four also received votes in the Coaches Poll. IU will travel to Lincoln, Nebraska, to face the Cornhuskers on Saturday, Oct. 10. Kickoff is scheduled for noon Eastern.

Block Comes Alive Late as the Indiana Hoosiers Women’s Volleyball Team Survives a Road Test at Rutgers Winning on the road is never easy in the Big Ten. The Indiana volleyball team (10-3, 3-1 B1G), which has been away from home since Wednesday, handled a late push from Rutgers to finish off a 3-1 (25-20, 17-25, 25-21, 26-24) victory on Sunday afternoon at Jersey Mike’s Arena in New Jersey. The Hoosiers picked up their first Big Ten road win of the season in the process. IU’s offense hit .288 during the proceedings despite some bumps in the road along the way. Second-year outside hitter Jaidyn Jager led the way with 14 kills while fifth-year opposite hitter Avry Tatum (12) and fifth-year middle blocker Kiki Granberry (11) both went into double figures. Third-year middle blocker Ella Boersema (8) has had at least eight kills in five-straight matches.

After little impact in the first two frames, IU’s block came alive with nine combined rejections in set three and four. Boersema had a hand in five of the blocks including three of the solo variety. The Hoosiers have held three of four opponents in conference play to a hitting percentage of under .240. Rutgers led in kills (55-53) but had seven more attacking errors than the visitors. Second-year libero Hannah Leftridge led IU with 12 digs and has reached double-digits in that category in six of the last seven contests. Leftridge, Tatum and third-year defensive specialist provided the five aces from the end line. It’s the fifth time this season that Segal has had multiple aces in a match. A weekend at home will be much appreciated as IU heads back to Bloomington for matchups against Nebraska (Oct. 8) and USC (Oct. 11). Both matches will be broadcasted live on Big Ten Network from Wilkinson Hall as IU looks to keep pace near the top of the Big Ten standings. First serve on Thursday evening is set for 6:30 p.m.

Veteran players stepped up for IU when it needed it the most. Fifth-year opposite hitter Avry Tatum had six kills in game four alone. In that set, third-year middle blocker Ella Boersema racked up three blocks – including the match winner to make it 26-24. IU’s offense had some lulls along the way but still saw the team hit .288 on the afternoon. It’s the seventh time in the last nine tries that the Hoosiers have been at .280 or better offensively. Second-year setter Teodora Krickovic had 42 kills (10.50 per set) in the win.

Third-year middle blocker Ella Boersema has quietly been on a roll for the Hoosiers. She had eight kills in the win over Rutgers and has had eight-or-more in each of the last five games. In that stretch, the Indiana native is averaging 2.63 kills per set and hitting over .400. She also had her fifth match of the year with five-or-more blocks in Sunday’s victory. • Third-year Emma Segal had a pair of crucial aces in a service run in set four. It’s the fifth time this season she’s had multiple aces in a match. IU’s 5-0 in those five contests. Fifth-year opposite hitter Avry Tatum shared the team lead in Sunday’s game with two aces of her own.

Second-year outside hitter Jaidyn Jager has been a force for the Hoosiers this season. She led the way with 14 kills on a .313 hitting percentage in Sunday’s win. It’s her 11th match of the year in double figures and the first with an efficiency above .300 since IU’s win over NC State (Sept. 19, 2026). Fifth-year middle blocker Kiki Granberry responded from a tough offensive night with 11 massive kills. She was one of three IU players in double figures. It’s the second time this season (13 – vs. Coastal Carolina) and 11th time in her career that she’s had 10-or-more kills in a match. Over the last two seasons, IU is 30-2 when playing unranked opponents with just one loss in the Big Ten in that timeframe. It was the ninth-straight win over Rutgers dating back to the spring 2021 season. For the second-straight season, the Hoosiers have reached 10 wins in under 15 overall contests.

Indiana Hoosiers Best the Ohio State Buckeyes 2-1 in Field Hockey No. 13 Indiana Field Hockey secured the 2-1 victory against Ohio State at Buckeye Varsity Field in Columbus, Ohio on Sunday Afternoon. It improves to 8-3 overall and continues the undefeated streak in conference play (4-0.) Third-year goalkeeper Sadie Canelli made a critical save in the final minute of the fourth quarter to maintain the lead and prevent overtime. The Hoosiers came out hot, being awarded an early penalty corner. Second-year midfielder Sydney Meltzer got the job done by notching one into the cage, giving them an early 1-0 lead. As play continued into the second, IU held the Buckeyes in their own territory, with the defense not allowing them any shots before the break. On the contrary, Indiana totaled six shots with three of them being on goal.

In the 35th minute of play, IU took back-to-back penalty corners, with fourth-year forward/midfielder Theresa Ricci as the inserter. As momentum picked up for Ohio State, its Maggie Bogle hit the strike that equalized the game, 1-1. In the fourth, both teams fought back-and-forth to secure the advantage. Lily Freeman put one in for the Hoosiers off of a penalty corner, giving them back the lead (2-1). She was helped by Meltzer. Despite Ohio State taking a shot in the final minute of play, it was unable to get past Canelli as IU was able to hold onto the 2-1 lead as the contest concluded.

Meltzer’s early goal was the first of her career. With the loss, The Hoosiers fall to 4-7-1 on the season and 1-5 in conference play. Michigan’s Melisa Kekic had a shot near the goal, but a sliding save by goalkeeper Dani Jacobson kept the match scoreless in the 18th minute. Off a pass from Campbell Jewell, Michigan’s Ella Jablinksey’s shot from outside the box made its way into the net giving Michigan the 1-0 lead in the 24th minute.

Haden Vlcek played a long ball that made its way past the Michigan goalkeeper, finding <dfn>Jenna Chatterton</dfn> for the equalizer in the 52nd minute. After a foul in the box, Michigan’s Adi Walick converted the penalty kick, retaking the lead for the Wolverines. Michigan’s Adi Walick sent a cross in to find Campbell Jewell. Marcus Mariota, who was starting in place of the injured Jayden Daniels, left the game after Washington’s second drive because of a knee injury. The veteran quarterback was sacked and didn’t return for the Commanders (1-3). Third-string rookie quarterback Athan Kaliakmanis threw his first NFL touchdown pass to cut Indy’s lead to 17-13 in the third quarter, but the Colts (2-2) answered with Spencer Shrader’s 52-yard field goal and Jones’ 4-yard run early in the fourth quarter. Taylor rushed for 95 yards on 20 carries as the Colts overcame two turnovers from Jones, who completed 19 of 34 passes for 134 yards with an interception and a fumble.

Kaliakmanis threw a costly interception early in the third quarter and the Colts quickly capitalized. Linebacker Jaylon Carlies picked off Kaliakmanis’ pass at the Washington 27 and returned it to the 20. Taylor’s second 5-yard run of the game made it 17-6. Kaliakmanis bounced back on the next drive, though, hitting Treylon Burks on a 47-yard touchdown pass that closed the gap to 17-13. Burks got past cornerback Sauce Gardner and found space before hauling in the deep ball. Shrader later added a 44-yard field goal — his third of the game — to extend Indy’s lead to 30-13. Kaliakmanis completed 15 of 33 passes for 186 yards with one touchdown and the interception.

The Colts led 10-6 at halftime after Taylor’s first 5-yard touchdown run — which he celebrates by pantomiming drinking tea — and then Shrader’s 48-yard field goal. The Commanders failed to capitalize on two red zone opportunities in the first quarter, settling for field goals. Odafe Oweh drove Colts left tackle Bernhard Raimann backward into Jones causing the quarterback to fumble on Indy’s first drive. Oweh then recovered it at the 21. The Commanders had fourth-and-2 from the 13 but opted for Drew Stevens’ 31-yarder. Washington then stalled at the Colts 5 on their next drive. On third down, Mariota was sacked at the 11 by Adetomiwa Adebawore and Laiatu Latu. Mariota walked off gingerly to the sideline, and another Stevens field goal made it 6-0, but the quarterback didn’t return.

Attendance was 60,907 for the 13th NFL game played at Tottenham. The league had recently reduced remaining ticket prices to 79 pounds ($105) including for some high-end seats. Attendance has never been below 60,000 in previous games. The venue opened in 2019 and features an NFL field below the Premier League team’s moveable soccer pitch. It was 70 degrees Fahrenheit at kickoff. Indianapolis Colts Left Tackle Bernhard Raimann was hurt early in the third quarter. For the Washington Commanders in addition to Marcus Mariota, Wide Receiver Jaylin Lane was evaluated for a concussion, Defensive End Charles Omenihu had a groin problem and Safety Tyler Owens left with a hamstring injury. Briscoe swept all three stages on the 1.5-mile track to earn the maximum 75 playoff points. Larson lost control on the final stretch, hit the wall and collided with Tyler Reddick, who slid into the infield but still recovered to finish third. “I saw Kyle charging hard behind me on those final laps,” Briscoe said. “He was pushing as hard as he possibly could on the high line, and I just tried to stick to my defensive marks, stay smooth, and protect the bottom. When you’re driving for a guaranteed spot in the Championship 4, nobody is going to give an inch.” It was Briscoe’s first career Cup Series victory in Las Vegas, where he led a race-high 175 laps. Briscoe also moved up to sixth in The Chase standings.

Denny Hamlin, who entered second in the playoff standings, finished 16th and was shut out of stage points. Hamlin is still second, but fell 40 points behind Larson. “I know everyone looks at the points lead and talks about the buffer we have, but I don’t view the gap like that at all,” Larson said. “There are still a lot of points on the table, a lot of restarts left, and anything can happen down the stretch.” Briscoe drove back from third place to pass Austin Cindric late in the second stage for the win. Cindric finished second in the stage, followed by Christopher Bell in third. Larson salvaged a stage point by finishing 10th, while Hamlin was shut out of stage points in 14th.

Briscoe won the opening stage ahead of Bell and Ryan Blaney. Briscoe elected not to pit for tires during a late green-flag pit cycle, holding off the field on the restart to secure the stage victory. Hamlin led the first 39 laps and was running third when he spun three laps before the end of the stage. Although he avoided major damage and continued, the lack of a caution flag caused him to fall back to 28th at the stage break. Hamlin set the fastest lap of the stage at 29.572 seconds on the third lap. “We had the speed to run up front, we showed that on the pole run and early in Stage 1,” Hamlin said. “But when you lose 25 spots, you spend half the race just working your way back to where you belong.” Larson, who started sixth, endured a 26-second green-flag pit stop while his pit crew made rear suspension adjustments. After dropping to 32nd place, he worked his way back to 24th by the end of the stage. Though he briefly fell off the lead lap, Larson regained it on lap 45 when a caution flew for a Zane Smith spin.

Stalled Drives Cost Taylor University Football in Loss at No. 11 Marian Despite matching No. 11 Marian in the box score, a one-for-six effort on fourth down conversions kept RV Taylor from keeping pace with the Knights on the scoreboard in a 26-6 loss. The two sides nearly mirrored each other’s offensive production on the stat line, with Taylor grabbing 20 first downs on 325 total yards of offense and MU (4-1) gaining 18 first downs on 332 total yards. The difference came in the hosts abilities to finish off their drives and come away with points, while TU struggled throughout to do the same.

The Taylor offense did not come alive early however, as the Trojans fell in a 13-0 deficit before managing to cross midfield. TU then saw a pair of drives snuffed out on fourth downs inside the Marian 40-yard line as the Knights extended the gap to 16-0 by the half. That trend continued for TU out of the intermission, as three of its first four possessions of the second half were ended on failed fourth down attempts. Taylor finally finished off a drive with points on its final touch of the afternoon, driving 79 yards in the final seconds and getting into the end zone on the final play of the contest.

Alex Amburgy and Brady Beall ignited the drive with back-to-back connections of 49 and 20 yards, before Amburgy found Noah Heinen for a 10-yard touchdown as time expired in the 26-6 loss. Beall’s two catches for 69 yards and a score highlighted the offense for Taylor, with JJ Payne adding two receptions for 33 yards. Jedidiah Galvin and Ethan Albert combined for 29 carries and 115 yards on the ground. David Worlds led the defense with seven solo tackles among his team-leading eight stops. Owen Folta followed with six tackles and two pass breakups and Niko Griggs registered TU’s lone sack.
