After playing just the first half of Wednesday’s preseason opener against Minnesota on the campus of Iowa State, Indiana’s starters played into the third quarter on Saturday. Pacers point guard Tyrese Haliburton was not available on Saturday. Head coach Rick Carlisle announced in his pregame press conference that Haliburton had sustained “a mild tweak of his right ankle” in Wednesday’s preseason game at Iowa State and was limited in practice on Friday. An MRI on his ankle was clean and Carlisle said the team is hopeful that Haliburton will return for either Tuesday’s preseason game at Oklahoma City on Friday’s preseason finale against Milwaukee.

Pascal Siakam and Kelly Oubre Jr. led seven Pacers in double figures on Saturday, finishing with 13 points apiece. Siakam added four assists in 22 minutes, while Oubre went 5-for-8 from the field and 3-for-5 from 3-point range. The Pacers made an early effort to get center Ivica Zubac the ball in the post. The 7-foot Croatian had four points and three rebounds early in Saturday’s contest, but also picked up two fouls. Indiana led by as many as seven points in the opening frame. The Hawks surged ahead late in the quarter thanks to a 9-1 run, but the Pacers scored the final four points of the quarter to take a 32-31 lead after one.

There were seven lead changes and one tie over the first 5:31 of the second quarter. Atlanta then reeled off 10 unanswered points (six by CJ McCollum and four from Onyeka Okongwu) to go up 55-46. The visitors remained in front for the remainder of the half, but Indiana closed the half strong. First, Siakam blocked Jalen Johnson at the rim, springing a break that finished with Andrew Nembhard finding Oubre for an open three. Then after Johnson made a pair of free throws with two seconds remaining in the half, Nembhard made full court pass to Siakam, who tipped the ball right to Aaron Nesmith, who buried a buzzer-beating 3-pointer from the right wing.

Indiana trailed 62-60 at the half. Both teams kept their starters in for the beginning of the third quarter. The Pacers’ first five tied the game twice on baskets by Oubre, but were unable to retake the lead before being subbed out for good down 78-74 with 6:30 remaining in the third quarter. The Hawks maintained their lead for the remainder of the frame, stretching the margin to 96-86 entering the fourth quarter. The Blue & Gold mounted a charge at the start of the fourth quarter, reeling off eight straight points, including back-to-back threes from Jay Huff and Jarace Walker.

Atlanta never relinquished the lead, however. The Hawks led 114-105 with 2:25 remaining, but Indiana reeled off eight straight points to pull within one with 1:07 remaining. Former Pacers guard RayJ Dennis converted two free throws with 52 seconds left to push the margin back to three. After a timeout, Jalen Slawson drew a foul and made one of two free throws with 41.3 seconds remaining. Dennis found Zuby Ejiofor for a dunk on the other end, but rookie center Rienk Mast knocked down a corner three to cut the deficit to one. Indiana fouled Dennis with 15.2 seconds to play. He made the first, but missed the second.

Indiana had a chance to tie or win the game on the other end, but Braden Smith missed a jumper from the baseline, he secured the rebound and kicked back out to Slawson, but the buzzer expired before Slawson could get a shot off. His three after the buzzer banked in, but it didn’t count. Zubac had 11 points on 4-of-6 shooting, five rebounds, and two assists in 20 minutes of action. Obi Toppin scored 11 points off the bench, fellow reserve Walker added 10 points, seven boards, and three assists, while Nembhard tallied 10 points and three assists. Ijeboi, a Minnesota transfer who had 441 yards rushing last season as a redshirt freshman, averaged more than 6 yards per carry. Purdue coach Barry Odom described Ijeboi’s game as tremendous. “He’s got the heart of champion,” Odom said. “He works every day as hard as he can to win. He cares about his teammates. He finishes runs going forward.”’ Ijeboi credited the offensive line for his success. “I couldn’t have done it without them,” he said.

Ryan Browne was 14-of-24 passing for 159 yards and a touchdown for the Boilermakers (3-3, 2-1 Big Ten) and added 81 yards rushing and a TD on seven carries. “Ryan got us in right looks, made the right checks,” Odom said. “He ran the ball the well. When you do that and don’t turn the ball over, you put yourself in position to play winning ball. We played well in all three phases, which is great to see.” The Boilermakers dominated in the first half, leading 20-3 at halftime. Jacobo Echeverria Lozano kicked a 45-yard field goal and a 15-yard TD pass from Browne to George Burhenn made it 10-0 going into the second quarter. After a 49-yard field goal by Minnesota’s Luke Drzewiecki, Purdue answered with a 28-yard field goal and a 3-yard TD run by Ijeboi. Ijeboi’s 1-yard TD run pushed the lead to 27-3 early in the third quarter. “They dominated the game in pretty much every facet,” Minnesota coach P.J. Fleck said. “You have to give them a ton of credit. We have to get a lot better. When you get beat in every single area and they play well in every area, the score is going to look like the score looked.”

For Minnesota It was a flat performance from the Gophers coming off a 20-14 win over visiting Michigan. Minnesota managed just 16 rushing yards in the first half and 25 on 12 carries overall. “We’d love to stay with the ground game and get it moving, but then the score got different where we had abandoned it,” Fleck said. For Purdue the Boilermakers captured their second consecutive victory with their most complete game this season. Purdue scored on all six red zone possessions and did commit a turnover. The TU ground game was led by 99 yards and one score from Jedidiah Galvin and a pair of scores from Evan Barker.

A sloppy first half that saw a trio of combined turnovers was salvaged by Folta’s pick-six with zeroes showing on the clock. With one second left in the half, Folta intercepted SMW’s final pass attempt on Taylor’s 15-yard line and took it to the house to push the Trojans to a 24-14 lead at the break.
