This multi-year agreement builds upon decades of dedicated partnership and mutual support, further cementing a longstanding alliance rooted in Monroe County and the state of Indiana. The extension of this agreement was secured by IU Athletics multimedia rightsholder IU Sports Properties.

The renewed partnership spans a wide breadth of Indiana University Athletics’ 24 varsity programs, with an intentional and elevated focus on supporting IU’s women’s sports programs. By championing women’s athletics alongside the broader department, Smithville continues to demonstrate its deep commitment to empowering all of IU’s 600-plus student-athletes to succeed athletically and academically. “Smithville has been a foundational partner for our department with its long-standing commitment to our student-athletes,” said IU Vice President and Director of Athletics Scott Dolson. “In everything they do, Smithville matches our own pursuit of excellence. I want to thank Darby McCarty, Cullen McCarty and the entire Smithville team for their unwavering support.”

“Indiana University Athletics represents excellence, tradition, and a deep connection to communities across Indiana, making this partnership a natural fit for Smithville. No one on the Indianapolis Colts’ roster is untouchable. The team made the first of what could be several moves Tuesday by trading perennial All-Pro guard Quenton Nelson to the Seattle Seahawks, according to multiple reports. The return: A third-round pick in 2027 and a 2028 fifth-round pick. Nelson has been a franchise pillar since then-general manager Chris Ballard selected him with the No. 6 overall pick in 2018. He’s in the final year of a four-year $80 million contract signed in September 2022 that made him one of the NFL’s highest-paid interior offensive linemen.

By trading Nelson, the Colts removed from their roster a player considered on the path to the Pro Football Hall of Fame and inclusion in the team’s Ring of Honor. He’s made that level of impact on the entire organization. Nelson has been a three-time first-team All-Pro and a three-time second-team selection in his first eight seasons. He joined Hall-of-Famer Joe Thomas and Richmond Webb as the only offensive linemen in league history to be named to the Pro Bowl in each of his first eight seasons. In his career, Nelson has started 136 of a possible 139 games and been a catalyst as running back Jonathan Taylor has rushed for at least 1,100 yards four times. In 2021, Taylor rushed for a franchise-record and NFL-best 1,811 yards.

Often, it was Nelson pulling from his left guard spot and leading the way. With the Colts in the midst of a three-game losing streak and sitting at 2-5 heading into Sunday’s road test against Jacksonville, the likelihood of maximizing assets — top players — has increased. Owner Carlie Irsay-Gordon’s first move in a major renovation of her team was firing Ballard Oct. 19. Her statement indicated that was just the beginning. “Making this change during the season was a deliberate decision,’’ she said. “Waiting would only delay the important work that needs to begin now.’’

Sunday’s 16-10 loss at Minnesota was the Colts’ third straight and dropped them to 2-5 heading to Jacksonville this weekend. Their streak of not making the playoffs is almost certain to reach six seasons. Although Nelson always has embraced his relationship with the Colts, he seemed to soften that stance last week. After Irsay-Gordon fired Ballard, he was asked if he was worried about his future in Indy. “I have no questions,’’ he said. “I leave that up to God and I’m just focused on being my best and giving my absolute all in everything I do and putting it all out there on the field.’’

He also was asked if players felt some level of accountability in Ballard’s firing. “I think that’s different from every individual,’’ Nelson said. “I feel like every single day I give my absolute best. I have no regrets about the work I put in and therefore the performances I have given this year because I literally give everything. “That way on Sunday, whether I play bad, there are no regrets. I know I gave everything I got.’’ The Colts likely will fill Nelson’s massive void at left guard with either rookie Jalen Farmer or veteran Dalton Tucker.

Trading Nelson probably is the first domino to fall before the NFL’s Nov. 10 trade deadline. The most attention will focus on Taylor, defensive tackles DeForest Buckner and Grover Stewart and perhaps wideout Josh Downs. Like with Nelson, Buckner, Stewart and Downs are in the final year of their contract. Taylor signed a two-year, $44 million extension in August and is under contract through 2028. Taylor ranks fifth in the league in rushing with 587 yards and his eight rushing TDs are tied for first.

Matt Painter agrees to contract extension with Purdue, jumps into top 10 of highest-paid coaches Purdue coach Matt Painter is set to become one of the highest-paid coaches in college basketball during the 2026-27 season after signing an extension with the program on Tuesday. ESPN reported that Painter’s new salary this season will be $7 million, up from $4.9 million last season, which would place Painter somewhere in the top 10 of highest paid coaches according to the annual database of salaries compiled by USA Today in April. Painter ranked 16th among all Division I coaches in salary last season. He is the second coach ranked in the top 20 to get a significant contract extension this offseason, joining Florida coach Todd Golden, who signed a six-year, $49.5 million deal in August that raised his salary to $7.5 million. “Purdue is a very special place for me, and it’s an honor to continue to be the head basketball coach at my alma mater,” Painter said in a release. “I’m humbled that the Purdue administration continues to put their faith in me to lead this program and am excited to continue to elevate our program with class and strive to reach all of our goals on and off the court.”

Painter has racked up 501 wins at Purdue and is second on the program’s all-time victory list, trailing only Gene Keady’s 512 career wins. During his tenure at Purdue, the Boilermakers have won five Big Ten regular-season titles, three Big Ten Tournament titles and reached the Final Four for the first time in 44 years in 2024. According to an extensive report by CBS Sports that ranked high-major teams in the NIL arms race, Purdue was near the bottom (Tier 6) and had a roster valued between $7.1 million and $9.9 million despite having one of the best and most consistent programs in the sport. The Boilermakers have made eight Sweet 16 appearances since 2017 under Painter and participated in the NCAA Tournament for 11 consecutive times it was held. Purdue opens this season unranked in the preseason AP Top 25 poll and faces No. 15 Gonzaga on Monday in the season-opener for both teams.

Indianapolis Motor Speedway eyes third straight Indianapolis 500 sellout as tickets went on sale Wednesday The Indianapolis Motor Speedway is aiming for a third consecutive sellout of the Indianapolis 500 as tickets for most of its major 2027 events went on sale Wednesday. Tickets went on sale at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Indianapolis Motor Speedway and IndyCar President Doug Boles said during an interview on WISH-TV Channel 8 in Indianapolis “We’ll sell out the Indianapolis 500 again,” Boles said. “We’ve sold more tickets in renewal than we’ve done the last two years.” The 111th running of the Indianapolis 500 is scheduled for May 30, 2027.

Fans who purchase tickets by Jan. 4 can save on fees, Boles said. Buying early also gives fans a better selection of seats before availability becomes more limited closer to race day. “When you renew, you get the best deal, and then the second-best deal is right now until Jan. 4,” Boles said. Tickets for two dirt track races are excluded from Wednesday’s sale. Boles said the Speedway keeps its ticket office in-house to maintain personal connections with fans and give customers direct access to staff members who work at the venue. “When everything gets outsourced to a big ticket company, which I understand, you lose that personal feel,” Boles said.

The Speedway welcomes about 350,000 people on Indianapolis 500 race day. Boles said the goal is to make fans feel connected to the venue and its traditions. “What makes us special is it is individual, and we do care about the customer,” Boles said. “The customer has that belief that they own the Speedway, right? And that’s what we want them to feel like.” The Speedway also continues to offer free general admission for children 15 and younger when accompanied by a general admission ticket holder. Fans can bring their own coolers, too. “We’re trying to do everything we can to make it affordable for families,” Boles said. Tickets will be available through the Indianapolis Motor Speedway website or by calling the Speedway ticket office beginning at 10 a.m. Wednesday.

Indiana University Athletics and Smithville Announce Five-Year Partnership Extension Indiana University Athletics and Smithville are proud to announce a five-year partnership extension, reaffirming Smithville as the Official Telecommunications Partner of IU Athletics.
