The Indiana Hoosiers will look to go 2-0 this evening as they host the Bellarmine Knights at 6 PM inside Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. The game will stream on Peacock and simulcast on NBC Sports Network. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Hoosiers are 1-0 after a 91-57 win over Eastern Illinois Monday Night in Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. Markus Burton led the way with 19 points. Bryce Lindsay added 14 points and Freshman Trevor Manhertz scored 11 points in 15 minutes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Hoosiers were 13 of 16 in the first half from the free throw line and led 44-23 at halftime and outscored Eastern Illinois 47-34 in the second half. The Hoosiers are 53-3 all-time in Home Openers at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall since the building opened during the 1971-72 season and have 9 straight home openers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Indiana hit 9 three pointers with Burton and Lindsay drilling three apiece along with 2 from Manhertz and 1 from Trent Sisley. The Hoosiers are going to run the floor, and they only allowed Eastern Illinois 5 offensive rebounds as the Hoosiers had 21 boards on the defensive end which was empathized in the off-season along with getting quick guards who not only drill the three ball but get to the rim. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Bellarmine is 0-1 after on the season after a 93-47 loss at #24 Vanderbilt Monday Night. Vanderbilt led 44-17 at halftime and were outscored by the Commodores 49-30. The game was tied 14-14 with nine minutes to go in the first half when Vanderbilt went on a 38-5 that bled into the second half. DeMarcus Surratt had 9 points, and Jacob Wassler had 8 points to lead the Knights. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Vanderbilt out rebounded Bellarmine 38-20 and the Knights will have their hands full with Indiana ‘s twin towers in seven-footer Aiden Sherrell and seven-two Samet Yigitoglu. Sherrell had 9 points, 6 rebounds, 2 steals along with an assist and a block in 25 minutes of action against Eastern Illinois.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Yigitoglu scored 8 points, pulled down 7 rebounds, 2 blocks and an assist. The Hoosiers out rebounded the Panthers 34-26 and are expected to dominate the glass in most games especially in the non-conference portion of the schedule. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Knights have a have 16 player roster that includes five players from the State of Indiana, 7 from Kentucky. 2 from Ohio and 2 from Illinois for Head Coach Doug Davenport who is second his second season in charge of his alma mater. The Knights were 13-19 a year ago and 7-11 in the Atlantic Sun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Doug played at Bellarmine from 2006-10 for his dad Scott who coached the Knights from 2005-2025 retiring with a record of 423-192 winning the Division II National Championship in 2011. Doug started his coaching career at Xavier as graduate assistant from 2010-12 and went to the University of Louisville in 2012 as the director of Video Operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He moved on to Eastern Kentucky University for the 2015-16 season as an assistant coach before returning to his alma mater to be an assistant coach for his dad from 2016-25 before taking over the program on March 11, 2025, when his father announced his retirement.
The five Indiana natives on Knights roster include Freshman Evan Harrell from Carmel, Junior Tucker Tornatta who played at Evansville Reitz along with the University of Indianapolis and Valparaiso. Sophomore Julis Gizzi who played at New Palestine and Indiana Wesleyan University. Freshman Mason Darrell from Crown Point and Freshman Brady Klopfenstein from Terre Haute North. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
This will be the first time since Bellarmine has been a division 1 program since 2020-21 season that they travel to Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall in their first official meeting with the Hoosiers although the two programs have meet previous in exhibition play when the Knights were in Division II.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Like Monday night for Eastern Illinois, Bellarmine could in the game for a little bit if they can knock down shots but the Hoosiers should win this one with ease before they head to Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis next Monday to face the Syracuse Orange in what will he the first test of the season in season 2 under Darian DeVries. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
