Easton Bogard put Indiana ahead midway through the first half, netting a pair of goals in less than three minutes to send the Hoosiers into the halftime break with a 2-0 lead. The Spartans got on the board in the 47th minute, but Charlie Heuer responded two minutes later to rebuild the two-goal cushion.

With the conclusions of all regular season matches, the field for the 2026 Big Ten Men’s soccer Tournament is now set. Her performance of the night, though, came in the 200 freestyle relay. The second-year star broke her own 50 free program with her split of 21.15, a tenth faster than her previous best time. Her classmate, Alex Shackell, had the busiest night swimming in her hometown. Shackell again swept her butterfly events, helped IU win that 200 free relay, won the Skins event and then helped IU win the Super Skins event to end the night. Shackell and Grana went one-two in Skins, surviving four consecutive heats of 50 butterfly.

Miroslav Knedla hit his stride Thursday night, setting CSL records with wins in the 100 backstroke (45.12) and 200 backstroke (1:37.77). His 200 back time moved him from No. 7 all-time to No. 2 behind teammate Owen McDonald. Knedla also won the men’s Skins events, knocking out four rounds of the 50 back. He rescued an Indiana win in the 200 freestyle relay, coming back to win as the anchor leg. Josh Bey won three events himself fresh off a great short course world trials last week. Bey started the night with a CSL record in the 200-yard breaststroke (1:50.73), knocking off Cal’s reigning NCAA Champion Yamato Okadome for the second consecutive CSL meet. He followed that with victories in the 200 IM and 200 free. Indiana’s quartet of Grana, Anita Bottazzo, Shackell and Kristina Paegle have won the Super Skins event – four rounds of 200 medley relay – in each of its three CSL meets this season. A game that has been hyped for months — No. 1 Miami at No. 4 Notre Dame — awaits Saturday night, a rematch from last season’s contest that got the Hurricanes into the College Football Playoff and kept the Fighting Irish out. But the Hurricanes lost top receiver Malachi Toney this week to an ankle injury, a huge blow to a Miami team facing a ranked opponent for the first time this season. “They’ve got great players,” Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman said Thursday. “I’m not saying one person’s going to replace Malachi Toney, but they have a lot of great players on their team and they’re going to find ways to get their best players on the field.”

For both sides, the stakes are enormous. Miami (8-0, No. 1 CFP) could send a serious message if it finds a way to win at Notre Dame Stadium without Toney — who had been a Heisman Trophy favorite entering the week, then had surgery on Thursday with hopes of returning this season. Notre Dame (7-1, No. 11 CFP) knows its margin of error is now slim, after being lower than many thought in the initial playoff rankings. “Obviously, everyone knows it’s a big game. We all know that,” Notre Dame offensive lineman Anthonie Knapp said. “We kind of see it as a great opportunity. It’s a great challenge to reach our full potential.” And there’s also the rivalry aspect. The “Catholics vs. Convicts” showdown in South Bend in 1988. A third-and-43 converted for a first down by Miami. The Hurricanes running it up in a 58-7 win to end the Gerry Faust coaching era. Notre Dame ending Miami’s national title hopes with a win in 1990.

“I would say that probably the biggest focus for us is to make sure that the focus stays on the preparation part,” Miami coach Mario Cristobal said. “I think the juice in games like this, it’s going to be through the roof for everybody — fan bases, the entire country, and that is awesome. But the most important part is our preparation.” That preparation had to be adjusted midweek; Toney got hurt in practice Wednesday. Even that won’t take the buzz off this one, a game that has been eagerly awaited for months and has Notre Dame aiming to prove a point after falling to Miami last season — or, in other words, leave no doubt. “You have to treat every game the same,” Miami quarterback and Heisman Trophy contender Darian Mensah said. “For me, I think every game is my Super Bowl. I try to go out there and do what I need to do to achieve the stuff I want to achieve.”

The big question: How does Miami handle being without Toney? Cooper Barkate figures to be part of the answer. The former Duke receiver, who transferred to Miami with Mensah after they led the Blue Devils to last season’s Atlantic Coast Conference title, is likely to assume a bigger role this week. And it’s very possible that the running back corps, led by Mark Fletcher Jr., is asked to do more. “They’ve got a great running backs room,” Freeman said. The Hurricanes were already underdogs going into this week. The news of Toney’s injury made them even bigger ones, with lines quickly moving from Notre Dame being favored by 6.5 points to 8.5 points at many sportsbooks. Miami has now gone just over three years without losing a game by more than a touchdown. The Hurricanes lost 20-6 to N.C. State on Nov. 4, 2023. They’ve gone 32-9 since; the average margin of defeat in those nine losses was 5.1 points.

Voters in the AP Top 25 think highly of Notre Dame, with the Irish currently ranked No. 4 in the poll. Notre Dame is one of only two teams that has been ranked in the Top 5 all season; Georgia is the other. The CFP committee doesn’t have the same view. Notre Dame was ranked No. 11 in the initial CFP rankings, meaning it would be the last at-large team into the playoff field if the bracket was being filled out entering this week. And a loss at home to a Miami team without Toney probably won’t help the Irish hopes of securing a CFP spot. “Notre Dame has a great opportunity in front of them at home against the No. 1 team in our CFP ranking this weekend to get that signature win,” CFP selection committee chair Hunter Yurachek said. Freeman didn’t seem affected by the No. 11 CFP rank. “It reminds you, get back in the moment,” Freeman said. “Win this moment. It don’t matter. It don’t matter today, at least.”

Notre Dame leads the all-time series 18-9-1, including a 9-1 mark inside of Notre Dame Stadium. Saturday’s game will mark the 11th instance of the teams meeting with both in the AP rankings. Forecasters say it’ll be a crisp fall night in South Bend. That’s great for the Irish. For Miami, maybe not. It still feels like summer in South Florida, with temperatures this week in the mid-80s. It could be in the low-to-mid 40s at kickoff on Saturday night.

Roberts, Koehler and Shrewsberry combine for 12 3s in Notre Dame’s 83-56 win over Mercyhurst Ethan Roberts scored 18 points, Brady Koehler and Braeden Shrewsberry each added 17 points and Notre Dame beat Mercyhurst 83-56 on Thursday night. Roberts, Koehler and Shrewsberry each made six of the Irish’s 28 field goals. Shrewsberry hit five shots from long range while Koehler made all four of his attempts from long range and Roberts made three. Jake Lemelman scored 18 points to lead Mercyhurst (0-2). The Fighting Irish opened the game on a 19-5 run and led 38-23 at the break. Roberts made all four of his field-goal attempts that included a pair of 3-pointers. Koehler scored eight first-half points for the Irish. The Lakers pulled within 11 points early in the second half but didn’t get closer. Two consecutive 3s from Koehler and another from Shrewsberry gave the Irish their largest lead, 78-41, with 6:02 to play. Notre Dame (2-0) finished 54% (28 of 52) shooting from the floor and 15 of 32 from distance. Mercyhurst Hosts Penn State Shenango on Saturday while Notre Dame Host Eastern Illinois on Monday.

Jonathan Taylor turns trade talk into ‘regular scheduled programming’ as the Indianapolis Colts and the Dallas Cowboys meet Jonathan Taylor has grown accustomed to playing football as the rumor mill spins. This week, he has heard his named linked to multiple teams, heard about “done deals” and heard some question whether it’s wise to even play Sunday when the struggling Indianapolis Colts and Dallas Cowboys meet — two days before this season’s trade deadline. So, Taylor has learned how to laugh it off. All he wants to do is give the fans something to cheer. “It’s kind of dragged on for a while now, so at this point, it’s just noise,” Taylor said Thursday about the chatter. “It’s been like three or four or however many weeks, so at this point, it becomes regular scheduled programming.”

It wasn’t supposed to be this way after the seven-year veteran who has never played for another team signed a two-year contract extension worth $44 million to stay with the Colts in August. Even then, this week’s featured matchup was supposed to be about the brother bash: Indy’s veteran receiver Josh Downs and Cowboys rookie safety Caleb Downs. But with both teams reeling, the older brother requesting a trade and the younger brother in the concussion protocol and dealing with a bad ankle, their dream story may have to wait.

That puts the spotlight on Taylor, the franchise’s No. 2 career rusher in what could be his final game playing in the Colts — though it’s not something he has contemplated. “We’ve got an opportunity, especially this week — especially after last week — to come back and put a better product on the field,” he said, referring to the embarrassing 42-7 loss to Jacksonville. “That’s my biggest goal. Last week was tough. You know you never want to go and put that on display.”

He just wants to give fans something to cheer about. Indy has (2-6) lost four straight and 13 of 15 and the last time they were home, the boobirds were out in force. Dallas (3-5) hasn’t played much better lately. It has the league’s worst run defense and has lost three of four after blowing a lead and losing 33-30 in overtime at Arizona last week. So, coach Brian Schottenheimer would like nothing better than to ruin Indy’s homecoming — even if it Taylor’s last stand. “There are certainly a lot of things we as a football team can do better,” he said, noting the Cowboys’ rushing disparity from Week 7 to Week 8. “I didn’t think we did a great job tackling.
