Hartley finished her Indiana Fever debut with 10 points in just more than 15 minutes off the bench as Indiana dropped a back-to-back matchup with the New York Liberty, 87-74, at Barclays Center on Wednesday night. The win snapped a seven-game losing streak for New York to improve to 2-7, while Indiana fell to 3-9 after completing one third of the 2022 regular season. Eastern Conference Player of the Week Kelsey Mitchell led the Fever in scoring for the ninth time this season with 17 points to go along with four assists. It was Indianapolis’ largest margin of victory on the road against Omaha dating back to 1988. The 10-run victory was Indy’s largest against Omaha since July 9, 1995 at Bush Stadium in Indianapolis. The previous three of the Indians’ double-digit wins over Omaha since 1988 came in Indianapolis, including a 15-0 win on Aug, 15, 1988 and an 11-1 American Association Championship-clinching victory later that same season.

In Wednesday’s win, the Indians (25-24) scored first for the eighth consecutive game courtesy of a two-out solo shot from Carter Bins in the top of the second inning. In the bottom of the fourth, Nick Pratto homered on a fly ball to right field to even the contest. With two outs in the top of the fifth inning, the Indians posted their first five-run frame of the night. Consecutive doubles from Josh Bissonette and Canaan Smith-Njigba with a pair of runners on scored three runs, and Travis Swaggerty’s third long ball of the season capped the offensive outburst.

Omaha (25-24) countered and cut the deficit to three runs in the bottom half of the fifth. A two-out, two-run single off the bat of major league rehabber Michael A. Taylor made it a 6-3 ballgame, but the threat ended there. The Indians offense continued to do damage in the next two frames, extending the lead to 8-3. Following back-to-back walks issued to Bligh Madris and Bins, Jamie Ritchie connected for an RBI single to left field in the top of the sixth. One inning later, the Indians added an insurance run with three consecutive singles from Swaggerty, Ji-Hwan Bae and Mason Martin.

Ritchie’s second hit of the night, a double in the top of the eighth, sparked Indy’s second five-run frame of the evening. The first six batters reached safely in the frame, with a bases-loaded walk and an RBI single by Bae scored a pair. With two outs, Bins then extended Indy’s lead to 10 runs with a two-run double. Osvaldo Bido (W, 1-3) surrendered three runs over 5.0 innings to earn his first Triple-A win in 14 outings (11 starts). Cam Alldred, Nathan Kirby, Zach Matson and Blake Weiman then combined to hold the Storm Chasers without a hit through the final four frames.

Omaha’s starter Marcelo Martinez (L, 1-4) yielded six runs on three hits with seven strikeouts in 5.0 innings of work. Six of Indy’s nine batters registered two hits in the win. Bins and Swaggerty led the pack with three RBI apiece, and Smith-Njigba followed with two.

For more local news . . .
Check out our archived episodes of What’s Happenin’ and Talkin’ Sports with Nick Jenkinson here

Indiana Cutters host Columbus Gladiators in Home Opener at Martinsville HSThe Indiana Cutters Semipro Football Team is back in action Saturday night at 7 o m when they host the Columbus Gladiators at Martinsville HS.
