Indiana University Graduate Tara VanDerveer is College Basketball’s all-time Winningest Coach <\/strong>
Tara VanDerveer sat in on Bob Knight\u2019s Indiana Men\u2019s Basketball practices when she was a student-athlete at IU in the \u201970s. She\u2019s now the winningest coach in college basketball history. No. 6 Stanford women\u2019s basketball\u2019s 65-56 win over Oregon State on Sunday was\u00a0VanDerveer\u2019s\u00a01,203rd, surpassing Duke legend Mike Krzyzweski\u2019s record in men\u2019s college basketball. VanDerveer set the record for the women\u2019s game in December 2020. VanDerveer has coached at Stanford since 1985 and boasts a .818 winning percentage across her 45 years as a college head coach. She spent two years at Idaho and five at Ohio State before joining the Cardinal. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

VanDerveer played for Indiana women\u2019s basketball from 1972 through 1975, and she was part of the AIAW Final Four team in 1973. She\u2019s in the IU Athletics Hall of Fame, and the university awarded her a Bicentennial Medal in 2021. Her Cardinal hosted Indiana in November and delivered the Hoosiers a lopsided loss. Ahead of that game, she told\u00a0The Daily Hoosier<\/em>\u00a0in an email about her pride for her alma mater and her respect for the job Teri Moren has done building up IU Women\u2019s Basketball. \u201cI\u2019m a definite, proud alum. Indiana has always had this love affair with basketball and now it\u2019s with women\u2019s basketball, too, and that\u2019s very exciting,\u201d VanDerveer told\u00a0The Daily Hoosier<\/em>\u00a0in an email ahead of the game in November. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe numbers of fans they have, the great teams they have. It\u2019s absolutely fantastic and really fun to be riding this wave of support and enthusiasm for women\u2019s basketball.\u201d VanDerveer and Stanford will play IU at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall in 2024-25, in the second leg of the home-and-home series that prompted this season\u2019s game. That will be her first game on the sidelines in Bloomington since 1985, when she coached Ohio State.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

#29 Indiana University Wrestling takes down #21 Maryland <\/strong>
In an intense and tightly contested dual, No. 29 Indiana found a way late in the match to secure a 21-15 win over No. 21 Maryland on Sunday afternoon in Wilkinson Hall. Despite trailing 12-4 after four matches, Indiana won five of the last six bouts to take the win. Indiana opened the dual with\u00a0Michael Spangler (125) scoring on four takedowns in a 15-3 major decision win over Maryland’s Tommy Capul to put IU up 4-0. After that, Maryland won three consecutive bouts to take a 12-4 lead. No. 20\u00a0Brayton Lee\u00a0got the Hoosiers back in striking distance with a 15-4 win by major decision over No. 30 Michael North to cut into the deficit, 12-8. Then, No. 22\u00a0Tyler Lillard\u00a0and No. 20 DJ Washington each took decision victories to put Indiana back in front, 14-12.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Redshirt sophomore Roman Rogtozke (184) added on to the lead with his 13-3 major decision win over Chase Mielnik. Maryland picked up a very close win at 197 lbs. with No. 5 Jaxon Smith (197) winning in Sudden Victory, 4-1, over Gabe Sollars. The Maryland victory at 197 lbs. put the Terrapins in position, trailing only 18-15. Indiana graduate student and heavyweight Nick Willham faced off with No. 23 Seth Nevills in the dual’s final bout to determine the winner. Two periods in, and the match was tied at 1-1. Willham worked to his offense with consistent forward movement in the final period, eventually shooting, and scoring, on a takedown with about 50 seconds left in the bout. Willham would hold on for a 4-2 win by decision and gave IU the 21-15 team victory. With the win, Indiana’s record moves to 4-2 overall and 1-2 in the Big Ten. Lee and Willham each picked up wins over ranked opponents. Lee’s match was his first in Wilkinson Hall competing as a Hoosier. Spangler and Rogotzke picked up their first career Big Ten dual victories. Indiana won six of the ten bouts. Indiana is undefeated in-home duals this year at 3-0. Indiana is 8-0 in program history against Maryland. Indiana will stay in Bloomington to host rival Purdue next weekend for a Saturday at 7 p.m. in Wilkinson Hall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Indiana University Women’s Tennis sweeps Western Michigan and Chicago State <\/strong>
Indiana Women’s Tennis defeated Western Michigan, 5-2, in their first match of the morning at the IU Tennis Center on Sunday. The Hoosiers No. 1 doubles duo\u00a0Lara Schneider\u00a0and\u00a0Lene Mari Hovda\u00a0got the Hoosiers the first doubles point with a 6-3 win. No. 3 doubles\u00a0Nicole Teodosecu\u00a0and\u00a0Sarah L’allier\u00a0clinched the doubles point for the Hoosiers with a 6-4 win. Schneider was victorious in the No. 1 singles match winning in straight sets 6-3, 6-1. Hovda and\u00a0Li Hsin Lin <\/a><\/dfn>both clinched the match with wins in the No. 4 and 6 singles matches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Indiana Women’s Tennis dominated Chicago State, 6-1 Sunday afternoon, as they improved to 4-0 on the season. Lara Schneider and\u00a0Lene Mari Hovda <\/dfn>overpowered the Cougars winning 6-1 in the No. 1 doubles slot.\u00a0Elisabeth Dunac \u00a0and Sarah L’Allier\u00a0earned the doubles point for the Hoosiers with a 6-2 win in No. 3 doubles. No. 2 singles Swierczynska was up 6-2 when her opponent retired, giving her the first win. Dunac got the Hoosiers a 3-0 lead with a win of 6-2, 6-0, in No. 3 singles.\u00a0Li Hsin Lin earned in the team another victory with a, 6-4, 6-1, win over No. 4 single. \u00a0Schneider and Hovda are on a four-game win streak in No. 1 doubles. The Hoosiers will take on the Yale Bulldogs on Saturday at the IU Tennis Center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Indiana University Men’s Tennis falls at Memphis <\/strong>
Indiana Men’s Tennis suffered their first loss of the season on Sunday to Memphis, 6-1, in Memphis, Tenn. Memphis secured the doubles point early, securing wins on No. 1 and No. 3 doubles to take the advantage heading into singles play. Senior\u00a0Michael Andre\u00a0captured a win on No.3 singles and earned a win against a ranked opponent in No. 80 Pau Fanlo. Andre is undefeated through three matches in singles play. After Sunday’s loss, Indiana is 2-1 on the season. The Hoosiers will be back in action this this Friday in an away match against Dartmouth at 6 p.m. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Indiana University Field Hockey’s Taylor Etling named January’s Female Scholar Athlete of the Month <\/strong>
Indiana Field Hockey Senior\u00a0Taylor Etling\u00a0was named IU’s Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year for the month of January. Etling has enjoyed a successful academic and athletic career throughout her four years in Bloomington. The senior from Saint Louis, Mo. is an Exercise major and played in 46 career games in her time as a Hoosier. She has been named Academic All-Big Ten twice in her career and has also earned NFHCA National Academic Squad honors. In 2022, she was named a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar. Etling plans to attend Medical School after graduation this May. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Indiana Fever sign Center Temi Fagbenle to a Training Camp Contract <\/strong>
The Indiana Fever announced the team signed center\u00a0Temi Fagbenle\u00a0to a training camp contract. Per team policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed. Fagbenle was selected in the third round of the 2016 WNBA Draft by Minnesota and last appeared in the WNBA in 2019 with the Lynx. The 6-foot-4 center averaged 5.4 points, 2.9 rebounds and 15.0 minutes per contest in 18 games played during the 2019 season. Fagbenle is currently playing with the London Lions in the\u00a0Women’s British Basketball League.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
