City of Bloomington Calls for Volunteers for Downtown Cleanup Ahead of IU Homecoming
The City of Bloomington has issued a call for volunteers to participate in a Downtown Community Cleanup Day on Wednesday, Oct. 16, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., in preparation for Indiana University’s Homecoming weekend. The cleanup will focus on making the downtown area more welcoming for residents and visitors by picking up litter, pulling weeds, and improving the overall appearance of public spaces. Hoosier Hills Food Bank Book Sale to feature memorabilia donated by Bob Hammel
Hoosier Hills Food Bank will host the “40th Anniversary Bob Hammel Community Book Fair”at the Monroe County Fairgrounds on October 17-22. Hammel, a local sportswriting legend and sixteen-time Indiana Sportswriter of the Year, has been a long-time supporter of both HHFB and the Book Fair and this year’s event will feature his donation of over 2,500 items from his personal collection of books and memorabilia.  

Book Fair Schedule:
Wednesday, October 16 – 5-7pm: Special Preview & Reception Honoring Bob Hammel (no sales) $20 suggested donation.  Light refreshments and program at 6pm.
Thursday, October 17 – 9am-7pm: Opening Day/Veteran’s Appreciation Day – $10 Admission – Veterans admitted free, Monroe County Veterans Services Office on site.
Friday, October 18 – 9am-7pm: FREE Admission
Saturday, October 19 – 9am-6pm: FREE Admission – Constellation Partnership Day – Free copy of “The True Story of the Three Little Pigs” for first 50 kids.
Sunday, October 20 – 9am-6pm: FREE Admission, Half-price Day– Heroes Day – Meet Firefighters
Monday, October 21 – 9am-6pm: FREE Admission, $10 Bag Day 
Tuesday, October 22 – 9am-6pm: FREE Admission, $5 Bag Day 
 
All proceeds from the book fair support Hoosier Hills Food Bank’s hunger relief programs.  

181st Intelligence Wing of Indiana Guard to deploy to NC to help hurricane victims
Gov. Eric Holcomb has called up a dozen members of the 181st Intelligence Wing of the State’s Guard, based out of Terre Haute, to travel to North Carolina to aid in search and rescue efforts related to the impact of Hurricane Helene. There are still hundreds of missing persons following the devestation of the Category 4 hurricane that wreaked havoc on the Eastern coast. The Soldiers will join the 80 Hoosier members of Indiana Task Force One the state’s emergency response team that was activated to the region last week.

Statue of Mellencamp to unveil at IU
Rock & Roll Hall of Famer and Native Hoosier John Mellencamp will have a statue in his likeness unveiled in a couple of weeks. The long time Indiana University benefactor will attend the ceremony on Friday, October the 18th where his statue will stand, at the fine Arts Plaza at the IU Bloomington Campus. Simultaneously, the IU Eskanzi Museum of Art has an exhibit featuring artwork created by Mellencamp.

Two Sheriff’s Deputies honored for Traffic Safety
In late September, two Monroe County Sheriff’s Deputies were honored at Lucas Oil Stadium and received the Indiana Traffic Safety All-Pro Award. Congratulations to Sergeant Moulden and Corporal Ortlieb on their recognition, and thanks for your continued service.
