Monroe County Commissioners schedule Oct 22 meeting to discuss new jail site
The Drama continues in the quest for a new Monroe County Jail. A week ago, County Commissioners postponed their vote on purchasing the North Park Property off of State Road 46 near the I69 intersection so they could explore a parcel described as the Vernal Pike Option, which came heavily endorsed by the region’s business community. But a meeting was held with some of the neighborhoods adjacent to the property on Vernal, and they expressed strong objection, citing safety and property value concerns. The Commissioners have set October 22nd as the next working session on the topic.

Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita co-leads national coalition against FCC inmate rules
Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita is co-leading a 14-state lawsuit against the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC’s) new rule that could limit phone calls for inmates. The FCC’s new rule would likely force some jails to eliminate such services altogether, and Rokita believes this could directly undermine the goal of expanding inmate access to calls and intrude into how state and local prisons and jails provide communication services to inmates.

Shooting at conclusion of weekend youth football game in Indianapolis
Shots were fired just moments after the conclusion of a youth football game held over the weekend at Cardinal Ritter High School in Indianapolis. Two coaches were the gunfire victims, one from each of the teams, in what appears to be a senseless act of violence. Onlookers were able to step to the plate and provide medical assistance to both of the wounded individuals until emergency personnel arrived. Polce are requesting any local businesses or attendees with video of the incident to contact them immediately.

New Indiana Fever GM
The Indiana Fever have made some operational changes to kick off their off-season. They announced that Amber Cox will take over as Fever General manager, replacing Liz Dunn, who will take on the role of Senior Advisor to the team. Cox was vice president of sports for the Connecticut Sun from 2016-2021, and team President for the Phoenix Mercury prior to that, earning 2 National Championships. Most recently, she was the COO with the Dallas Wings.

DNR reminds hunters to be safe during Deer Season
Indiana DNR urges hunters to implement safety throughout the season. More than 300,000 people are expected to participate in some form of deer hunting in Indiana during the various deer hunting seasons that run through Jan. 31, 2025. When injuries occur, the most common are from accidents involving hunting from tree stands and elevated platforms.
