Indiana University Baseball falls in Extra Innings to UNLV Despite a pair of late chances to win the game in the eighth and ninth inning, the Indiana Baseball team (0-4) couldn’t find its first win of the season. The Hoosiers fell 13-12 (F/10) to UNLV on Monday afternoon at Surprise Stadium in Surprise, Arizona the second extra-innings defeat of the young season. IU climbed out to a three-run lead thanks to a pinch-hit home run from redshirt sophomore Joey Brenczewski. From there, it was all catch up for head coach Jeff Mercer’s squad. The Hoosiers would tie the game at 7-all in the seventh and 9-all in the ninth but never found a winning run. IU scored three in the bottom of the tenth inning but fell a run short from the victory. The Rebels hung crooked numbers in the third, fourth, ninth and tenth innings in the win. UNLV bookended its weekend against IU with a grand slam in the first inning of Friday’s game and the tenth inning of Monday’s contest. Both home runs ultimately decided each contest between the two sides.

Pitching coach Dustin Glant called on the services of nine different pitchers to eat the innings in the fourth game of the weekend. Junior left-handed reliever Anthony Gubitosi found the most success with three innings of shutout ball. He struck out a pair and allowed just one hit. Redshirt senior Matthew Bohnert (L, 0-1) was tagged with the loss. Freshman first baseman Jake Hanley continued his hot weekend at the plate. He provided the first three-hit game of his career and extended his hitting streak to four games to begin the year. Brenczewski, Dickerson and junior outfielder Devin Taylor each had three RBIs. Sophomore outfielder Andrew Wiggins reached three times with a trio of walks. 13 different position players appeared in the game. Freshman infielder Will Moore collected the first hit of his career with a double down the left field line in the sixth inning. The Hoosiers left 10 runners on base and finished 6-for-36 on the weekend with runners in scoring position.

Todays scheduled home opener for the Indiana Baseball team has been canceled due to inclement weather and cold temperatures. The contest against Purdue Fort Wayne is currently not set to be rescheduled to a later date. IU will now turn its attention to this weekend’s affairs in Cary, North Carolina against Northwestern (Feb. 21), Fordham (Feb. 22) and Harvard (Feb. 23). The Hoosiers will look to pick up their first win on Friday evening. The new date for the home opener at Bart Kaufman Field is now scheduled for next Tuesday (Feb. 25) against Xavier. Admission for fans will be free. That game is set for a 4:00 p.m. first pitch in Bloomington.

Former Indiana Hoosier Trayce Jackson Davis Participates in the NBA All-Star Game   Former Indiana University forward Trayce-Jackson Davis got a chance to show off his game to the country on Sunday during NBA All-Star Game festivities at San Francisco’s Chase Center. Jackson-Davis, who played at Indiana from 2019-23 and who has been with the Golden State Warriors the last two seasons, was not technically an All-Star, but due to the format change in the All-Star Game, he got to take part. There was not an All-Star Game in the traditional sense. All-Star Sunday featured four teams – one featuring young players against teams featuring established All-Stars. Jackson-Davis and Candace’s Rising Stars had played their way to Sunday’s activities by winning Friday’s Rising Stars Challenge. Games were played with the first team to score 40 points earning the win.

Jackson-Davis was part of Candace’s Rising Stars, coached by women’s basketball legend Candace Parker. They took on Shaq’s OGs, a team of established stars, coached by Shaquille O’Neal. One of Jackson-Davis’s teammates on the Rising Stars was his former nemesis at Purdue, Zach Edey, who plays for the Memphis Grizzlies. Shaq’s OGs defeated Candace’s Rising Stars 41-25. Jackson-Davis played six minutes and made his only shot. He also had an assist and a steal. Shaq’s OGs would go on to win the All-Star Tournament with a 41-25 victory over Chuck’s Global Stars. Jackson-Davis and the Rising Stars advanced to the All-Star Game by winning the Rising Stars Challenge on Friday.

Jackson-Davis, playing for Team C, scored six points in Friday’s first game as Team C defeated Team T 40-34. In Friday’s Rising Stars championship game, with a target score of 25, Team C beat Team G League 25-14. Jackson-Davis did not score in that game. Jackson-Davis is averaging 7.6 points and 5.9 rebounds for the Warriors. He’s started 37 of the 49 games he’s played in for Golden State, though his minutes have been diminished of late. The Warriors are currently 28-27 and have the 10th and final spot to make the postseason from the Western Conference. Golden State could be a threat going forward as they acquired veteran star Jimmy Butler just before the NBA trade deadline. The Warriors are 3-1 since they acquired Butler.
