Indiana University Men’s Basketball’s strong second half leads to a 15-point upset of #13 Purdue The Indiana Hoosiers beat the #13 Purdue Boilermakers 73-58 on Sunday afternoon in a sold-out Simon Skjdot Assembly Hall. The Hoosiers are 16-11 overall and 7-9 in the Big Ten and host Penn State on Wednesday Night at 8:30 PM. Indiana needed to win this one to keep their NCAA Tournament hopes alive. After Penn State the Hoosiers travel to Washington and Oregon before closing out the regular season hosting Ohio State. Purdue drops to 19-9 overall and 11-6 in the Big Ten as the Boilermakers have lost four in a row and return home to West Lafayette to face UCLA and Rutgers and close out the regular season at Illinois. Purdue is fighting for a double bye in the Big Ten Tournament and now trail Wisconsin and Maryland by a half game as both those teams have four games left in the regular season.

Indiana went to a small lineup with Luke Goode, Anthony Leal, Trey Galloway, Malik Reneau and Myles Rice to start the game bringing Mackenzie Mgbako and Oumar Ballo off the bench. Reneau and Galloway led the Hoosiers with 15 points each, Rice and Ballo had 12 points each, Luke Goode had 11 points and Anthony Leal scored 8 points. Kannan Carlyle and Mackenize Mgbako did not score as Mike Woodson played the four of the starting five over 30 minutes with Reneau playing 24 minutes and Ballo 22 minutes off the bench. Mgbako played 9 minutes and Carlyle played 7 minutes. The Hoosiers finished the game shooting 52% from the field on 28-52, 4-19 from three-point range 21% and 13-20 from the free throw line for 65%. The Hoosiers pulled down 27 rebounds, dished out 18 assists, 9 steals, 4 blocks, 44 points in the paint, 12 bench points and committed 7 turnovers.

Malik Reneau became the 55th player in Indiana University Men’s Basketball history to join the 1,000-point club. Reneau went 7-7 from the field, 1-1 from the free throw line, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, a block and a steal. The team rallied around Head Coach Mike Woodson after the game after the school announced he was retiring at the end of this season. “That means a lot. This is my 4th year here. Anthony, Gallo, and Malik have been around me a lot. They know truly what I’m about… it was special. Anytime your players rally around you, I love them.” Woodson said after the game. Today’s win over Purdue marked the 40th anniversary of when Hall of Fame Coach Bob Knight threw a chair against Purdue in Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall, and he was ejected as the Hoosiers lost 72-63. Mike Woodson got the chair and sat in it the chair on the bench to dedicate the anniversary to the man that Woodson played for when he was player at Indiana and having the chair is special to him. “That is probably the chair. I’ve had it a while. A lot of people say they have the chair. I wasn’t going to throw the chair” Mike Woodson said.

Flecther Loyer scored 20 points and Myles Colvin added 11 points. Trey Kaufman-Renn finished with 9 points and 4 rebounds as he fouled out with 4:30 left in the game and Braden Smith was held to 8 points along with 5 assists and 2 rebounds. Smith went over 500 rebounds for his career. Purdue finished the game 20-47 from the field for 42%, 7-16 from three-point range for 43% and 11-15 from the free throw line for 73%. Purdue pulled down 28 rebounds, dished out 9 assists, 5 steals, no blocks, 18 points in the paint, 16 bench points and committed 16 turnovers.

There were 5 ties and 3 lead changes as Purdue finished the first half on a 21-4 run in the last eight minutes and thirty-nine seconds of the half as Purdue led 37-25 at halftime. Indiana came out in the second half and went on 7-0 run to trail the Boilermakers 37-32 with 18:41 left in regulation. The Hoosiers chipped away at the lead trailing 39-37 with 15:39 left in the second half. The Hoosiers tied the game 39-39 on a Malik Reneau dunk at the 15:27 mark. Trey Kaufman-Renn gave Purdue a 41-40 lead on a made free throw at the 15:11 mark. Luke Goode gave the Hoosiers the lead with a made layup and completed the three as the Hoosiers led 42-40 with 14:39 left in the game. Indiana led the rest of the way outscoring Purdue 31-13 and sending the Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall crowd into a frenzy. It’s the second time that Indiana has beaten Purdue at home when the Boilers are ranked in the top 15. Indiana beat Purdue 79-74 on February 4, 2023, which was the last win in the series snapping a three-game losing streak to their archrivals.

Indiana is 66-44 all-time against Purdue in Bloomington and for Mike Woodson this is biggest one yet with him retiring at the end of the season. Not only does it mean so much to the head coach it means a lot to players as well. “It means so much to all of us, because it means so much to the state of Indiana.” Senior Trey Galloway said after the game and Indiana is 4-4 against Purdue with Mike Woodson as Head Coach. Trey Galloway added “This is Coach’s last year, so we want to make it special for him, but we want to make it special for everyone.” Trey Galloway says this team has been a family since being put together in June and they’re not giving up on going dancing. Indiana could have packed in at halftime and the Hoosiers responded with a 15-point home over a ranked Purdue in Coach Woodson last go against the Purdue unless they meet up in the Big Ten Tournament and on the 40th anniversary of Bob Knight’s famous chair throw against Purdue. It’s only fitting that the Hoosiers came away with the win.

Indiana University Women’s Basketball falters on the Road at #22 Michigan State The Indiana Hoosiers fell to the #22 Michigan State Spartans 73-65 at the Breslin Center in East Lansing, Michigan Sunday Afternoon. The Hoosiers are 17-10 and 9-7 in the Big Ten with two games left hosting Maryland Thursday Night for Senior Night and then traveling to Purdue next Sunday to close out the regular season. Michigan State is 20-7 overall and 10-6 in the Big Ten and travel to Ohio State before closing out the regular season hosting Minnesota. The Spartans lead the all-time series with the Hoosiers 49-33 as Michigan State improves to 23-12 all-time in East Lansing against the Hoosiers and snaps a two-game losing skid against Indiana.

Chloe Moore-McNeil led the Hoosiers with 15 points and 10 rebounds for her first double-double of the season. Karoline Striplin added 14 points, Yarden Garzon and Shay Ciezki added 13 points apiece. Syndey Parrish scored 6 points. Lilly Meister and Lexus Bargesser scored 2 points each and Juliana LaMendola played but did not score. Garzon hit two three pointers bringing her career total 202 and is one away from tying Tyra Buss who had 203 three pointers from 2014-18 and four way from tying Kris McGrade who knocked down 206 three pointers from 1991-94. The Hoosiers finished the game 23-58 from the field for 43%, 6-22 from three-point range for 27% and 9-14 from the free throw line for 64%. The Hoosiers pulled down 36 rebounds, dished out 15 assists, 7 steals 2 blocks and committed 18 turnovers.

Grace Van Slooten led the way with 17 points, Theryn Hallock and Jocelyn Tate added 16 apiece. Jadaan Simmons finished with 11 points. Julia Ayrault who along with VanSlooten is the Spartans co-leading scorer coming into the game was held to 4 points and 8 rebounds. Emma Shumate scored 6 points and Ines Sotelo added 3 points off the bench and Ball State transfer Nyla Hampton played but did not score. Michigan State finished the game 25-63 from the field for 39%, 5-25 from three-point range for 20% and 18-22 from the free throw line for 81%. The Spartans pulled down 36 rebounds, dished out 18 assists, 10 steals, 5 blocks and committed 10 turnovers.

Indiana University Women’s Swimming and Diving Captures Eight Titles, 18 Medals at the Big Ten Championships   Indiana swimming and diving medaled in every event Saturday the final day of the 2025 Big Ten Women’s Swimming Championships, inside the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion on the campus of the Ohio State University. IU finished second in the meet but dominated the medal podium, leading the league with eight Big Ten titles and 18 medals. The next-best program, Michigan, had five titles and 12 total medals. Indiana’s medal count was one more than its total from last year’s first-place team performance. Indiana has finished in the top three in 19 consecutive seasons, with 14 championship or runner-up finishes during that span.

Including relays, 10 Hoosiers medaled and seven won Big Ten titles. Senior Anna Peplowski and sophomore Miranda Grana led IU with six medals apiece as both medaled in all three of their individual events. Peplowski broke two Big Ten records during the week. Leading off Wednesday’s 800 freestyle relay, Peplowski tied the conference’s 200 free standard with a 1:40.69 split. The next day, she won the 500-yard freestyle in record time with a 4:33.86. Peplowski took bronze in the individual 200 free and 100 free events and was a member of the gold medal 400 medley relay as well as the silver medal 200 and 400 freestyle relays. At the end of the season, Peplowski will complete her collegiate career an eight-time Big Ten Champion and 21-time medalist.

Sophomore transfer Miranda Grana introduced herself to the Big Ten with two titles and four silver medals. Grana won her first individual Big Ten title Friday in the 100-yard butterfly, becoming the second Hoosier, and first since Gia Dalesandro in 2017, to win the event. She also captured gold in the 400-medley relay and silver in four events: the 100 back, 200 back, 400 freestyle relay and 800 freestyle relay. For the second consecutive season, senior Skyler Liu won both the 3-meter and platform diving events. Liu was dominant Saturday night, winning the tower event by 32.90 points with a 366.90 total – a score that would have won an NCAA title last season. Liu scored at least 69 points on every dive and highlighted her list with an 81-point reverse 2 ½ somersaults pike in the third round. Liu was again named the Big Ten Diver of the Championships as the highest-scoring athlete on the boards this week.

Senior Ching Hwee Gan set the tone Saturday, winning her second consecutive conference championship in the 1,650-yard freestyle. Gan took the lead after 200 yards and did not look back, posting consistent splits between 28.50 and 28.90 over the first 1,200 yards. Gan’s 15:46.22 was a personal best and ranks No. 3 this season as she eyes a third-straight medal at the NCAA Championships. Senior Brearna Crawford kept an IU breaststroke tradition alive Saturday, capturing Indiana’s fifth straight 200-yard breaststroke gold and ninth in 10 seasons. Crawford shared co-champion honors with USC graduate student Kaitlyn Dobler, both finishing in 2:07.22. Freshman Mary Cespedes was fifth in 2:08.46, as she dropped over three seconds from her career best coming into the meet (2:11.57).

Sophomore Ava Whitaker impressed with a silver medal in Saturday’s 200-yard butterfly final, dropping a personal best 1:55.17, after placing ninth as a freshman. In the consolation final beforehand, junior Katie Forrester (1:56.82) and sophomore Avery Spade (1:57.14) finished one-two to each earn top 10 performances in the event. IU punctuated the meet with a silver medal in the 400-yard freestyle relay, recording the program’s second-best time ever in 3:10.77. Peplowski led off in 47.82, gave way to junior Mya DeWitt’s 48.40 and Grana’s 47.64 before junior Kristina Paegle unleashed a 46.80 in the anchor. The Indiana women will prepare for the 2025 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships, slated for March 19-22 in Federal Way, Washington.   

Bloomington South Repeats as Boys Swimming Sectional Champions The Bloomington South Panthers scored 494 points to win their second consecutive Boys Swimming Sectional Title Saturday at East Central High School in St. Leon, Indiana. Bloomington South has won 14 Sectional Titles in Program History. Bloomington North finished second with 347 points and Edgewood finished eight with 106 points. The 494 points are the most points in the Sectional for Bloomington South since they scored 496 in 2018. Bloomington South won eight events sweeping all three relays starting with the 200 Medley Relay followed by the 200 and 400 Freestyle Relays. Freshman Peter Kovacs won the 100 and 200 Yard Freestyle, Senior David Kovacs won the 100 Meter Backstroke, and the 200 Yard Individual Medley and Senior Lukas Paegle won the 100 Yard Butterfly.

Bloomington North Senior Jay Stewart won the 50 Meter Freestyle as the Bloomington schools took home 9 of the 12 events. Sophomore Nash King of Oldenburg Academy won the 500 Meter Freestyle, Columbus East Senior Gavin Day won the 1 Meter Diving Event and Columbus East Senior Mikhail Machavariani won the 100 Yard Breaststroke. In addition, the following advance to the State Finals as the met the State standard cut time. Bloomington South Senior Botond Kun finished second in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:38.52 and second in the 200 Meter Freestyle with a time of 1:42.63. Senior Lukas Paegle finished second in the 50 Meter Freestyle with a time of 20.66 Bloomington North finished second in the 200-meter freestyle with a time of 1:27.30. Jay Stewart finished second in the 100 Yard Butterfly with a time of 48.97. Bloomington South will have 6 Individuals competing in 8 events and all three relays. Bloomington North will have 1 individual competing in 2 events and 1 relay at the State Finals this Friday and Saturday at the Indiana University Natatorium on the Campus of Indiana University-Indianapolis.

Bloomington South Wrestler Evan Roudebush Claims Third Place at the IHSAA State Wrestling Finals Bloomington South Wrestler Evan Roudebush closed out his storied career on Saturday with a third-place finish in the 165-pound weight class at the IHSAA State Wrestling Finals at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.  Roudebush pinned East Central’s Jaxsin Prater in 1:07 in his opening round match Friday Night. Roudebush came back Saturday morning and only needed 45 seconds to pin Elkhart’s Chance McCullough of Elkhart in the Quarterfinals.  Roudebush lost his semifinal match to Michael Major of Carmel 2-0 as Major had a reversal with 1:29 left as the only points in the match. Roudebush responded in the third-place match taking down Bellmont’s Gavin Davis by pin in 45 seconds. Roudebush closes his senior season with a 46-2 record.

The Panthers had three wrestlers competing in the state finals but for Senior Cam Meier and Junior Wyatt Cooksey they fell in their opening round matches on Friday. Meier competed at 120 pounds and lost to Crown Point’s Gavin Lewis 8-6. Meier finishes the season at 40-6 and ends his career with over 100 wins. Cooksey competed at 150 pounds and lost to Silas Foster of Purdue Poly-Englewood. Cooksey finishes with a season record of 37-8 and will enter his Senior season with a 92-30 career record. Brownsburg won their third state title with a record breaking 234 points and seven individual State Champions.  The Bulldogs won in 2017 and 2024 and the seven individual champions ties Bloomington High School’s record of seven individual state champions in 1949. Center Grove finished second for the third consecutive year and Noah Weaver of Rossville won the mental attitude award.   

Bloomington South Girls Basketball Season comes to a close in the Class 4A Semi State Semifinals The Bloomington South Panthers ended the 2024-25 Girls Basketball Season Saturday Morning with a 46-43 loss to the Pike Red Devils in the Class 4A Semi State Semi Final at Historic Southport Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. Bloomington South ends the season with a 23-3 record and Pike improves to 21-6. Julia Lashley led the Panthers with 10 points and 7 rebounds, Angela Rojas-Cepero added 9 point and 5 rebounds, Audrey Craft scored 7 points and grabbed 7 rebounds. Violet Hall scored 9 points and pulled down 4 rebounds and Ceclia Rojas-Cepero scored 7 points. Sanyia Smith led Pike with 14 points and Komari Booker scored 9 points and pulled down 9 rebounds as the Red Devils went 17 of 62 from the field.

The game was a defensive battle throughout as both teams went scoreless halfway through the first quarter. Bloomington South took a 1-0 on a free throw and the Red Devils scored with 3:50 left when Marley Jeffers completed a three-point play. The Panthers went 0-8 from the field until Julia Lashley hit a three pointer with 40 seconds left in the first quarter to make 12-6 Pike after eight minutes. Bloomington South kept the game close in the second quarter outscoring the Red Devils 16-11 and 8-10 at the free throw line but Pike went to the locker room leading 23-22 at halftime. Pike was 9-30 from the field, 1-7 from three-point range and 3-4 from the free throw line. The Red Devils pulled down 15 rebounds, 9 turnovers and committed 10 fouls in the first half.

Bloomington South finished the first half 5-20 from the field, 1-8 from three-point range and 11-16 at the free throw line. The Panthers pulled down 23 rebounds including 8 offensive and committed 11 turnovers. In the third quarter Bloomington South went three for three from the field as Julia Lashley drained a three to put the Panthers up 29-23. Bloomington South went into the fourth quarter leading 35-34 and outscored the Red Devils 13-11. In the fourth quarter the Red Devils scored 12 points as held the Panthers scoreless for the final 3:05 of the game as the Panthers scored 8 points and Pike closed out the game scoring the final four points to keep their season alive. Bloomington South ends a memorable season for Head Coach Larry Winters as the Panthers win over twenty games for the first time since a 21-4 record since the 2018-19 season. The Panthers 23 wins tied the most wins in a season since they went 23-1 during the 2001-02 season.
