Ball State University Women’s Basketball headed to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2009 Alex Richard had 28 points and nine rebounds to lead No. 1-seed Ball State past third-seeded Toledo 65-58 on Saturday in the championship game of the women’s Mid-American Conference Tournament. The Cardinals advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the second time, the other trip coming in 2009. Ball State shot 50% in the third quarter and the Cardinals’ 22 points surpassed their first-half output in which they trailed 24-21 at halftime. The Cardinals led 43-40 entering the fourth quarter. Richard took over from there, scoring 14 of Ball State’s first 17 points in the fourth quarter. The quarter opened with an 11-2 run for a 54-42 Ball State lead and it was 60-49 after a couple of free throws by Richard with a little under two minutes remaining.

Like the third quarter, the Cardinals scored 22 points in the fourth. Richard made 13 of 21 shots and blocked two shots. Ally Becki had 12 points, seven rebounds and five assists for Ball State (27-7). Sammi Mikonowicz had 12 points, seven rebounds and five steals for Toledo (24-8). Kendall Carruthers led the Rockets with 17 points on 7-of-9 shooting and three free throws. Khera Goss added 11 points. The first half was a defensive battle with Toledo shooting 37.5% and Ball State 38.5%. Both teams were forced into double-digit turnovers, Toledo with 12 and Ball State with 10. Toledo led 24-21 at halftime. Ball State finished the game at 45% from the field and Toledo shot 43%. Ball State had 17 turnovers and Toledo 19. Toledo has been to the NCAA Tournament nine times.

Tre Donaldson’s Layup Wins it for the Michigan Wolverines over the Maryland Terrapins  Tre Donaldson went coast to coast with a less than a second left as the #3 Seed Michigan Wolverines beat the #2 Seed Maryland Terrapins 81-80 in the Big Ten Tournament Semifinals presented by TIAA Saturday Afternoon at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. Maryland had once last chance throwing a pass the length of court and were unable to get a shot off.  Michigan is 24-9 and will face #5 seed Wisconsin this afternoon at 3:30 PM for the Big Ten Tournament Championship. Michigan is in the championship for the sixth time. The Wolverines one the first Big Ten Tournament in 1998 and was later vacated due to NCAA rules violations. Michigan won back-to-back titles in 2017 and 2018. Michigan was runner up in. 2014 and 2019. 

Vlad Goldin led Michigan with 25 points and 10 rebounds and Danny Wolf scored 21 points along with 14 rebounds as the seven footers combined for 46 points and 24 rebounds. Tre Donaldson scored 12 points and Nimari Burnett added 10 points. Michigan went 31-66 from the field for 47 percent, 7-18 from three-point range for 40 percent and 12-13 for 92 percent. Michigan pulled down 47 rebounds, dished out 17 assists, 3 steals, 2 blocks and committed 19 turnovers. Michigan led 38-34 at halftime and Maryland outscored Michigan 46-43 in the second half. 

Derik Queen led the Terrapins with 31 points and went 9-9 from the line. Selton Miguel scored 16 points, Julian Reese scored 13 points and Ja’kobi Gillespie finished with 10 points. Maryland finished the game 27-61 from the field for 44 percent, 7-21 from three-point range for 33 percent and 19-23 from the free throw line for 82 percent. Maryland pulled down 18 rebounds, 17 assists, 7 steals, 6 blocks and committed 6 turnovers.         Maryland has lost four games at the buzzer this season and they will learn from this and take their 25-8 record into the NCAA Tournament next week. Maryland was dominated on the boards and had a breakdown of defending the final play and Michigan is tough matchup for Maryland with the two seven footers and the bigger guards. 

Michigan beat Wisconsin 71-56 in the 2017 Big Ten Tournament Championship Game in Washington DC when the Wolverines were 8 Seed and Wisconsin was a 2 seed. This will be Wisconsin’s fourth game in four days and for Michigan their third in three days and both are headed to the NCAA Tournament regardless but one will leave Indianapolis with the Big Ten Tournament Title and the automatic big to the NCAA Tournament. 

John Tonje’s 32 points leads the Wisconsin Badgers over the Top Seeded Michigan State Spartans The #5 Wisconsin Badgers knocked off the top seed Michigan State Spartans 77-74 in the Semifinals of the Big Ten Men’s Basketball Tournament Presented by TIAA Saturday afternoon at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. Wisconsin improves to 25-8 on the season and advances to today’s championship game at 3:30 PM against Michigan or Maryland. Wisconsin will make their 9th Big Ten Tournament Championship game appearance and second in a row after losing to Illinois 93-87 in Minneapolis a year ago. Wisconsin has won three Big Ten Tournament titles in. 2004, 2008 and 2015. The Badgers were runners up in 2005, 2007, 2013, 2017 and 2024.

John Tonje scored 32 points to lead the Badgers going 8–15 from the field, 4-10 from three-point range and 12-14 from the free throw line along with 7 rebounds, 2 assists and a block. John Blackwell scored 14 points and Carter Gilmore added 10 points off the bench for the Badgers. Wisconsin went 23-54 from the field for 42 percent, 9-29 from three-point range for 31 percent and 22-28 from the free throw line for 78 percent. The Badgers pulled down 33 rebounds, dished out 15 assists, 4 blocks, 3 steals and committed 7 turnovers.

Jase Richardson led the Spartans with 21 points as Michigan State is 27-6 on the season and wait until 6 PM tomorrow night to hear their named called in the upcoming NCAA tournament. Jeremy Fears Jr. scored 14 points and Tre Holloman added 10 points off the bench. Carson Cooper pulled down 10 rebounds. Michigan State went 24-59 from the field for 40 percent, 7-19 from three-point range for 36 percent and 19-24 from the free throw line for 79 percent. The Spartans pulled down 37 rebounds, 13 assists, 2 blocks, a steal and committed 7 turnovers. Wisconsin led 37-31 at halftime and Spartans outscored the Badgers 41-40 in the second half. One of the most unusual plays occurred with 4:54 left in the first half when Michigan State lost the ball and the hit the official and stayed in bounds there was no whistle and John Blackwell picked it up and went the other way and Jaden Akins came down and blocked the shot.

John Blackwell hit two free throws with 31 seconds to give Wisconsin a 74-70 lead. Jase Richardson hit two free throws with 22 seconds to make it 74-72. Nolan Winter hit a free throw to give Wisconsin a 75-72 lead with 21 seconds left. Jeremy Fears Jr. hit two free throws to make it 75-74 with 14 seconds left. John Tonje went to the line and hit two free throws to make it 77-74 with 14 seconds left. Tre Holloman’s three pointer was blocked by Carter Gilmore with 8 seconds left. John Tonje for the rebound and was fouled by Fears Jr. with six seconds left and missed his only two free throws of the day. The Spartans had one last chance as Fears Jr. had a three point shot block by Tonje and Gilmore came up with rebound as Michigan State wanted a foul called and the officials said no foul and the game was over as Wisconsin as a five seed advances to the title game for the second straight and hope this time they take that Big Ten Tournament Trophy back to Madison with them for the fourth time.

Indiana University Rowing Completes Day 1 of the Oak Ridge Invitational   No. 15-ranked Indiana’s two top boats claimed race victories on opening day as the Hoosiers competed in the Oak Ridge Cardinal Invitational Saturday on Lake Melton in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Racing will resume with a final session this morning starting at 8:34 a.m. Indiana’s first crew will launch at 8:34 a.m. Fans can follow live results at HereNow.com. In both victories, Indiana managed to finish almost five seconds faster than Alabama and 16 seconds quicker than Wisconsin. The Hoosiers will test themselves against No. 16-ranked Duke on Sunday. Originally slated for two sessions Saturday, weather pushed the start back to mid-afternoon, leaving only enough time for each crew to race once. Indiana raced No. 19 Alabama and Wisconsin in five of six races and managed a 6-5 head-to-head record in the afternoon.

Rosters Announced for the Indiana All-Star Girls Basketball Futures Game Rosters for the third annual girls’ basketball Futures Game have been released. This year’s event is scheduled for Monday, June 2 at Fishers High School, with the girls tipping off at 6 p.m. followed by the boys at 8 p.m. The event is limited to freshmen and sophomores, with the 24 players divided into two teams. The North squad will be coached by Rensselaer Central’s Wes Radtke; the South team will be coached by South Knox’s Hollie Anson-Eaves.

Here are the 2024 rosters. NORTH Malika Jenkins, Merrillville, So.-The 5-8 guard led the Pirates to a 15-7 finish, averaging 14 points, three assists and two steals per game. Jenkins shot 39% from the field and 66% at the line. Riley Schellhammer, Fishers, Fr.-Schellhammer, a 5-8 guard, logged 13.8 points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals per game in her first varsity season. She shot 36% from the field and 87% at the line (97-for-111). Delaney Noll, Homestead, Fr.-A 5-9 combo guard, Noll shined as part of a veteran lineup, averaging 6.2 points per game for the sectional champion Spartans. Janaya Cooper, Fort Wayne Snider, Fr.-The 5-11 guard/forward averaged nearly 15 points and seven rebounds in her first varsity season. Cooper rounded out her line with two assists, two steals and a block per game for the sectional champion Panthers. Kylah Patterson, Hammond Morton, So.-Patterson led the Governors to 16 wins, their most since 2015-16. The 5-11 forward averaged 24.1 points, 14 rebounds, 2.5 assists and three steals over 22 games. Nyomi Hahn, Marion, Fr.-A 6-0 guard/forward, Hahn averaged nearly a double-double in her debut season with 18.6 points and 9.6 rebounds per game. She rounded out her line with 2.2 assists, 2.7 steals and 2.8 blocks per game.  Suzy Perego, Homestead, Fr.-A 6-1 combo guard and another of Homestead’s rising prospects, Perego averaged just over two points per game, helping the Spartans to a 24-3 finish. Lillie Graves, McCutcheon, So.-The 6-0 standout followed a breakout freshman campaign by leading the Mavericks to their first regional championship since 2011. Graves averaged 18.9 points, 4.5 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 4.0 steals, with a 46% mark from the field. Hillary Labis, Westville, Fr.-Labis, a 5-11 guard, was at the forefront of a 21-win campaign for Westville (most wins since at least 2000-01), averaging 20.3 points, 8.6 rebounds, 2.4 assists, 2.6 steals and 1.8 blocks over 23 games. Lily Scholl, Northridge, So.-Scholl poured in nearly 16 points per game on 62% shooting in her first full varsity season. The 5-10 standout also averaged 6.2 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 3.1 steals. Addison Hummel, Penn, Fr.-Hummel, a 6-0 forward, notched 10.5 points and eight rebounds for the Kingsmen this season. She also clocked 1.5 steals and a block per game, helping Penn to a 19-6 finish. Adah Hupfer, Pendleton Heights, So.-A versatile 6-3 forward, Hupfer helped the Arabians secure their first sectional championship since 2011, averaging 13.5 points, 13.6 rebounds, 1.2 blocks, a steal and 1.7 assists per game.  Head coach: Wes Radtke, Rensselaer Central Assistant coach: Brad Bowsman, Twin Lakes

SOUTH Zoey Wood, Mt. Vernon, Fr-The 5-5 guard started all 25 games for the 18-win Marauders, averaging 15.8 points, 5.2 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 2.7 steals. She shot 40% from the field, 38% from 3 and 80% from the line. Hannah Menser, Plainfield, So.-Menser, a 5-8 guard, led the Quakers to a 17-win campaign, logging 17 points, 3.3 assists, 2.9 steals, 1.8 blocks and 3.6 rebounds over 23 games. She was a 43% shooter from the floor (38% from 3, 86% at the line).  Kenzie Koch, Eastern Hancock, So-The 5-9 guard set Eastern Hancock’s single-game scoring record twice and cleared 1,000 career points this season. Koch averaged 29 points, six rebounds, three assists, five steals and a block for the sectional runner-up Royals. Elliot Leffler, Roncalli, So-Leffler built upon a strong debut campaign, averaging 17 points, six rebounds, two steals and an assist over 27 games for semi state runner-up Roncalli. She shot 40^ from the field, 37% from 3 and converted 77% of her free throws. Kendal Hill, South Knox, So.-A starting guard for the Class 2A champions, Hill accounted for 14 points, six rebounds, seven assists and four steals per game. The 5-8 guard shot 50% from the field and 72% at the line. Riley Johnson, Heritage Christian, Fr.-A 5-10 point guard, Johnson helped the Eagles reach the semi state championship game, averaging 14.7 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2 steals and 1.4 assists per game. She shot 39% from the field, 86% at the line and 34% from behind the arc. Claire Larrison, Greensburg, So.-A standout defender, the 5-10 Larrison established herself as a big-time scorer this season, averaging 16.2 points on 64% shooting. She also logged 7.7 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 2.3 steals per game for the 3A runner-up Pirates.  Caroline Wiggins, Cathedral, Fr.-Wiggins established herself as a key contributor for the regional champion Irish, averaging nine points, six rebounds, two assists, two steals and a block per game. She shot 44% from the field and converted 38-of-56 free throws (68%).  Rylee Canaan, Evansville Memorial, So.-A 6-0 Butler commit, Canaan averaged 11.8 points for the Tigers.  Payton DuVall, Franklin Central, So.-DuVall, a 6-2 forward/center, helped Franklin Central advance to regionals for the first time since 2020, averaging 12.3 points, 10 rebounds, 1.4 assists, 1.8 steals and 2.3 blocks per game.  Alaina Diamond, Loogootee, So.-The 6-2 two-sport standout averaged 17 points, nine rebounds, an assist, two steals and two blocks across 19 games. Diamond shot 47% from the field. Paige Schnaus, Gibson Southern, So-A 6-2 center, Schnaus averaged 15.3 points and 8.7 rebounds for the regional champion Titans, with a 53% mark from the field (77% on free throws). Taylor Trojans Men’s Lacrosse Score Road Win at RV Mount Vernon Nazarene In its first outing since receiving votes in the NAIA Top 10 Poll the Taylor men’s lacrosse team scored an impressive, 11-7, win at previously undefeated RV Mount Vernon Nazarene in a clash between two programs looking to secure a national ranking. Will Saxby helped kickstart the Taylor offense in the defensive struggle, putting two shots in the back of the net in the opening period for a 4-2 TU advantage. The lead swelled to 6-2 with unassisted scores from Henry Cooper and Jackson Dale early in the second, but the Cougars (7-1) scored the game’s next four goals to draw even midway through the third.

Taylor took control over the final 20 minutes however, posting five unanswered strikes to put the game away. Saxby was once again in the middle of the rally, with two more goals, being followed by a spinning laser from Cooper to highlight the spurt. Saxby ended with four goals, while Dale added two goals and three assists. Grant Elzinga posted five ground balls and three caused turnovers to highlight another defensive gem from the Trojans and Ben Harrell protected the lead with 14 saves in goal. With the win, the Trojans closed their non-league slate with a 5-2 record, matching the program’s best seven-game start since 2021. RV Taylor (5-2) will open WHAC play on March 29 at 1:00 pm, when it hosts No. 9 Lawrence Tech (4-1).
