Indiana Women’s Basketball Picked to Finish 2nd In Big Ten Preseason Poll
Senior guard Grace Berger and junior forward Mackenzie Holmes were named 2021-22 preseason All-Big Ten selections and the Indiana Hoosiers were picked to finish second amongst the league’s coaches and media. Berger is a preseason All-Big Ten selection for the second-consecutive season after earning All-Big Ten first team honors in 2021-22. Holmes makes her first appearance on the preseason All-Big Ten team after also turning in All-Big Ten honors along with an All-Defensive team nod last season. The nation’s leader in triple doubles last season, Berger averaged 15.4 points, 6.8 rebounds, 4.6 assists and shot 44.1 percent from the floor as she earned WBCA and USWBA All-American honorable mention honors last season. She scored in double figures 23 times last season including seven games scoring 20 points or more. The Louisville, Kentucky native looks to be the 29th member of IU’s 1,000-point club as she enters the 2021-22 season with 996 career points. Holmes led the team in scoring and rebounding last season, averaging 17.8 points and 7.6 rebounds per game as she became the program’s first ever Associated Press All-American honorable mention. Her seven double-doubles were also a team-high as she also led the Big Ten in blocks last season (81, 3.0 bpg.). She finished seventh in the NCAA ranked in total blocks and blocks per game last season. The Gorham, Maine native also shot 60.7 percent from the floor last season, which ranks fourth in a single season at IU. The Hoosiers are picked to finish in both the coaches and media polls, coming in behind last year’s regular season and tournament winner Maryland. Iowa, Michigan and Ohio State followed, respectfully in each of the two polls. All top five teams are ranked in the Associated Press Top 25 (No. 4 Maryland, No. 8 Indiana, No. 9 Iowa, No. 11 Michigan and No. 17 Ohio State). Indiana is coming off a 21-6 overall record and 16-2 finish in Big Ten play as it advanced to the NCAA Tournament Elite Eight last season. All five starters return for the program, including seventh-year senior and 2022 Nancy Lieberman Award watch list candidate Ali Patberg senior guard Nicole Cardaño-Hillary and senior guard Aleksa Gulbe.
Trayce Jackson-Davis Named Preseason AP All American
Indiana sophomore forward Trayce Jackson-Davis has been named to the Associated Press preseason All-American team. Jackson-Davis, the leading returning scorer in the Big Ten, has also been named first-team 2021-22 Preseason All-American by noted analyst Dick Vitale and ESPN.com, Preseason First Team All-American by Athlon’s and Second Team by the Blue-Ribbon College Basketball Yearbook. The Center Grove standout was also selected to the Karl Malone Watch List. He started all 27 games last season and was the only high major player to average at least 19.0 points and 9.0 rebounds during last season. He was fourth in the Big Ten in scoring (19.1), second in rebounding (9.0), fifth in field goal percentage (51.7%) and blocked shots (1.4) and was third in minutes played (34.2). In league games only, he finished third in scoring (18.4), second in rebounding (9.2), fourth in field goal percentage (50.6%) and blocked shots (1.4) and third in minutes played (34.2). He is the first returning first, second, or third team All- American for the Hoosiers since Calbert Cheaney in 1993. TJD is the first Hoosier to be named to the preseason AP All-American team since Cody Zeller was selected in 2012. Zeller would go onto be selected fourth overall in the 2013 NBA Draft by the Charlotte Bobcats. The nine-year NBA veteran is now a member of the Portland Trail Blazers.
Indiana Men’s Golf Finishes 8th At Williams Cup
The Indiana Men’s Golf Team Finished in 8th place at the Williams Cup in Wilmington North Carolina to close the fall portion of the 2021-22 schedule. The Hoosiers scored an 884 which was 20 over par. North Carolina won the 10-team event with a score of 847 which was 17 under par. The Hoosiers finished ahead of Iowa and UNC Wilmington who tied for 9th with a score 895 which was 11 strokes back of the Hoosiers. Indiana Junior Noah Gillard tied for 26th place with a score 221 which was 5 over par. Indiana will be back in action the first weekend in February when they travel to Florida for the Big Ten Match Play Championships.
Indiana Women’s Soccer Misses the Big Ten Tournament
When the Big Ten Women’s Soccer Tournament Starts this Sunday October 31st. Indiana will not be in the eight-team field. The Hoosiers 2-0 loss at Purdue Sunday knocked the Hoosiers out for the 8th and final spot. Indiana finished the season with a 3-4-3 record with 12 points and tied for 9th place with Minnesota who scored 12 points and was 4-6 in conference play. Indiana finished with a 9-5-4 record this season. Rutgers won the regular season championship with a 10-0 record and will host 8th seed Wisconsin. 2 seed Purdue will host 7 seed Ohio State, 3 Seed Michigan will host 6 seed Penn State and 4 seed Michigan State will host 5th seed Iowa. The Semifinals will be held Thursday November 4th at the highest remaining seed along with the Championship game Sunday November 7th at 2 pm. The Semifinals and Championship game will be shown on the Big Ten Network.
