Veronica Hargrave Breaks 800 Meter Record to Close Split Weekend for Indiana University Track and Field The Indiana track and field team wrapped the final day of the weekend on Saturday, April 18th, seeing action from the Gibson Invitational and Tom Jones Memorial. The Weekend closed with several personal bests and event winners, including a new school record holder. The Hoosiers started the day in Terre Haute, Ind. closing the Gibson Invitational with three top five finishes and an event winner.
Makayla Hunter saw her second event win of the weekend, taking first place in the women’s shot put invite with her throw of 16.71m/54-10.25. In the women’s discus, Emma Gardner set a new personal best with her throw of 43.73m/143-5 to place third overall. Caleb Smith also finished in the top-10 in the men’s discus invite, throwing for 51.34m to place fourth overall. On the track, Kylee Poulton ran a season best time in the women’s 4oo-meter to finish inside the top-10, closing the Gibson Invitational.
In Gainesville, Fla., Indiana saw more personal best performances across the sprint group and a record braking performance in the mid-distance. Marcus Townsend started the day with a personal best time of 10.77 in the men’s 100-meter. The 400-meter group set three personal bests including Kiera Davis (53.38; 8th-place) and Ava Olomajeye (54.16) in the women’s race, and Kalen Sargent (46.66) in the men’s race. Davis’s time now ranks sixth on the all-time record list in school history.
In the women’s 800-meter invite, Veronica Hargrave (1:59.79) passed Molly Beckwith to become the school record in the women’s 800 and second Hoosier to run the event in under two minutes. Hargrave now becomes the seventh Hoosier to hold the indoor and outdoor records in the same event (Rachelle Boone 200m; Derek Drouin High jump; Camden Marshall 800m; Leah Moran Triple jump; Willie Morrison Shot put; Aarik Wilson triple jump). “Veronica had one goal for this weekend,” said assistant coach Andrew Poore, “which was to break two minutes, and she took every advantage of the opportunity and left no doubt. Molly Ludlow [Beckwith] had the school record at 1:59.9, and I thought that was one of our strongest records in our history book, especially considering she did it 16 years ago. Breaking that record felt like a really big deal, and I think it was a nice way to cap off a weekend where the team as a whole seemed much more comfortable in some high-level environments.”
Abilene Christian beats Indiana University Baseball in Middle Game of Weekend Series After hitting the ball at a high level all week, the Indiana Baseball team (17-22, 6-12 B1G) couldn’t make the necessary in-game adjustments to get going on Saturday afternoon. As has been the case all year, offensive struggles were persistent in the middle game of another series. IU worked just four runs on seven hits in an 8-4 loss to Abilene Christian (19-19, 2-4 WAC) at Bart Kaufman Field. Runners left on base in timely situations came back to hurt late in the game. The Hoosiers were just 2-for-11 with runners in scoring position. They left the bases loaded in the opening inning and failed to get anyone across with two on, no outs in the fifth inning. Late solo home runs from redshirt freshman catcher Brayden Ricketts and sophomore outfielder Hogan Denny weren’t enough to close the deficit. Sophomore left-handed pitcher Brayton Thomas (L, 1-3) was rolling through the first three innings. He had already racked up seven strikeouts (career high) through three frames and was sitting on just 44 pitches. But the fourth inning proved costly for the young southpaw. A series of free passes opened the door to the IU bullpen and shifted all the momentum back to the visitors. A two-run single from Kanon Sundgren put Abilene Christian in front for good.

Spreen started her freshman campaign at Alabama, where she played 128 minutes off the bench. Spreen will look to fill the role of Kya Hurt, who departed from the team on April 7. She joins Trista Fayta, Jaeden Pratt, Zanrya Adams, Morgan Bruno, Madison Austin, Naveah Thomas and Grace Nelson on the active roster.
Greenfield, Indiana Native Braylon Mullins to Return to the University of Connecticut for his Sophomore Season Storrs is in store for even more Mullins mania. Braylon Mullins, the freshman phenom from Greenfield, announced his return to UConn Saturday night on Instagram. A highlight video and graphic saying “I’m back” was posted with the caption “unfinished business.” Mullins’ father Josh also reposted the announcement on X, formerly Twitter, saying “Connecticut are you READY … LETS GO HUSKIES”. As just a freshman, Mullins was a key piece of the Huskies’ success this past season. Thanks to a few magical shots by Mullins, UConn reached the national championship game in Indianapolis before ultimately losing the title to Michigan. In his first year under head coach Dan Hurley, Mullins averaged 12 points a game for the Huskies in his first collegiate season. He started 29 of the 33 games he played, shooting 33.5% from three-point range. Mullins was a star at Greenfield-Central High School, being named both Indiana Mr. Basketball and a McDonalds All-American his senior year before heading to Storrs. One of the major recruiting points for UConn was getting Mullins back to his “hometown” of Indy for this year’s Final Four. Mullins’ miracle shot in the final seconds of the Elite Eight game against top-seed Duke secured that spot. He had another 15 points against 3-seed Illinois in the Final Four to help UConn advance to its third national title game in four years.
