Bloomington South to Battle Lake Central for the IHSAA Class 4A State Championship Game at Victory Field The Bloomington South Panthers and Lake Central Indians will battle for the IHSAA Baseball Class 4A State Championship Game this evening at 8 PM at Victory Field in Indianapolis. Bloomington South is making its third state finals appearance in baseball and first since 1972, when they won in the old one-class format over South Adams. This year’s team (25-6) has won nine straight games, capped by a 1-0 victory over #3 Evansville North in the semi-state final. Oddly enough, the Panthers didn’t record a hit and manufactured the game’s only run on a walk and a throwing error in the fourth inning. Senior pitchers Xavier Hemingway and Tyler Morris combined on the shutout. Lake Central is also making its third trip to the 4A state final and won it each of the previous two times in 2012 and 2024. The Indians (27-8) are looking to add a baseball trophy next to the softball championship the school brought home last weekend. Their road to Victory Field cleared some serious hurdles: #5 Munster and #2 Crown Point in sectionals, #15 Goshen in regionals, and then Zionsville on a walk-off hit and #7 Penn in semi-state.

Indianapolis Indians Outslug the Iowa Cubs 11-8 in Des Moines Keiner Delgado, Jhostynxon Garcia and Dominic Fletcher teed off on the Iowa Cubs pitching staff to combine for eight RBI, with one home run each, as the Indianapolis Indians emerged victorious, 11-8, on Thursday night at Principal Park. Khristian Curtis (W, 2-0), coming off a dominant Triple-A debut, ran into early trouble on the mound. Jonathan Long took him deep in the second inning for a 1-0 Iowa lead, and a wild pitch in the third allowed Christian Bethancourt to trot home from third base. The Indians defense got the club back in the game, stealing two runs from the I-Cubs in the fourth. Back-to-back outfield assists cut down Iowa baserunners at home plate as catcher Joey Bart swiped them out just in time. With the momentum on Indianapolis’ side, Keiner Delgado hammered his first Triple-A home run in the next inning to put the Indians on the board, 2-1.

The 24-year-old starters, Curtis and Iowa’s Will Sanders, kept it a close game until the sixth inning, when Enmanuel Valdez knotted up the contest with an RBI triple off Yosver Zulueta (L, 0-1). The Indians proceeded to surge ahead with seven hits, including two long balls, to end the frame with an 8-2 Indianapolis lead. 12 Indians batters filed through the batter’s box before Iowa could collect three outs. Iowa immediately pulled out its own tape measure to climb back within one in the bottom of the inning. The I-Cubs sent nine hitters to the plate and launched three home runs to make it an 8-7 ball game. Indianapolis ultimately broke away, 11-7, with RBI doubles from Fletcher and Valdez in the seventh and eighth innings. Iowa tacked on one more run in the ninth with a sac fly from Triantos, but Long struck out to end the contest, 11-8.

The Atlanta Dream Snaps the Indiana Fever’s Four Game Winning Streak The Indiana Fever fell to the Atlanta Dream, 108-101, snapping their four-game winning streak. The Fever trailed by 13 points and climbed back to tie the game in the fourth quarter but were not able to complete the comeback. “I thought we let them get to the rim too easily,” Fever head coach Stephanie White said. “That was pretty much the story of when we had our defensive failings, was it was our one-on-one (defense). We tried to wait until they caught the ball to defend. We didn’t make it difficult for them to pass the ball around the perimeter… We’ve got to be able to guard one-on-one and more than anything, we got to defend without fouling.” The Fever allowed 60 points in the paint, and the Dream shot 35 free throws, making 27 of them.

This was the fifth time the Fever have allowed 100 or more points this season and the third time it has happened in a game that did not go to overtime. Caitlin Clark (26 points), Kelsey Mitchell (26 points), and Aliyah Boston (23 points) all scored over 20 points. The Fever shot 56% from the field and 47% from three in the loss. Angel Reese led the Dream with 21 points. The Fever are back in action this afternoon against the Dream once again, with that game being on the road. The game is scheduled to tip off at 1 p.m.

Top Ranked Evansville Mater Dei takes on Bluffton for the Class 2A Baseball State Championship Evansville Mater Dei and Bluffton will battle this afternoon for the Class 2A Baseball State Championship at 4:30 PM at Victory Field in Indianapolis. Evansville Mater Dei is making its second straight appearance in the 2A final and seventh overall. The Wildcats’ only state championship came in 1999 over Jimtown, and this year’s squad looks like it could change that. Mater Dei (29-3) is riding a 16-game winning streak and in semi-state took out #9 University in the semis before outlasting #11 Sullivan 5-2 in nine innings in the final. Bluffton (19-10) is on a magical ride. The Tigers started the season 6-6, lost their last three regular season games, and looked like an unlikely playoff contender. But they’ve run through the postseason with three shutouts in five victories, including knocking out 1A power Lafayette Central Catholic at semi-state. Senior Griffin Morgan and junior Axton Beste put fear in opposing pitchers with a combined 18 home runs.
