Indiana Football Closes Out the Season with 44-7 Loss at Purdue
The 2021 Indiana Football Season has come to a close with the Hoosiers falling 44-7 to the arch rival Purdue Boilermakers at Ross Ade Stadium in West Lafayette Saturday Afternoon. Indiana finishes a disappointing season at 2-10 and 0-9 in the Big Ten after expectations were so high for this team that was preseason ranked 17th in the nation.
Purdue reclaims the Old Oaken Bucket for the first time since 2018 and will prep for an upcoming bowl game after finishing the regular season 8-4 and 6-3 in the Big Ten. Aidan O’Connell was 26-31 for 277 yards and 4 touchdown passes, David Bell had 6 receptions for 79 yards and a touchdown and Zander Horvath had 15 carries for 49 yards to the lead the Purdue Offense that outgained the Hoosiers 406-204. Purdue scored first with 8:30 to go in the first quarter on a 1-yard touchdown run by Zander Horvath. Indiana got on the board with Donaven McCulley’s 2-yard touchdown run with 3:38 left in the first quarter to make 7-7. It was all Purdue scoring the next 37 points and handing the Hoosiers the most lopsided loss in series since 2008 when Purdue won 62-10 in West Lafayette.
Grant Gremel got his first career start as the walk-on from Noblesville was 18-30 passing for 147 yards with an interception and had 2 fumbles. Gremel is the first walk on to start at quarterback since Adam Greenlee in 1995. Davion Ervin-Pondexter had 8 carries for 47 yards, Peyton Hendershot had 6 receptions for 51 yards. Hendershot finishes with 14 career touchdowns the 2nd most for a tight end behind Ted Bosler who had 15 from 2010-2013. Hendershot has the most recpetions and yards for Indiana Tight End in School History breaking Bosler’s records earlier this season. Ty Fryfogele caught 2 passes for 19 yards and finished his career with 158 receptions and 2,231 yards which is 6th all time in IU Football History.
It did not take long for Tom Allen to make changes to his coaching staff. It was announced Sunday that Offensive Coordinator and Quarterback’s Coach Nick Sheridan had been let go. Sheridan a former quarterback for the University of Michigan had been on the staff for the last 5 seasons.“I want to thank Nick for his work and commitment to our football program,” Allen said in Press Release. “He is a good football coach and a man of tremendous character, but we are in the need of a reset on the offensive side of the ball. We will begin our search for Nick’s replacement immediately. To make this change Head Coach Tom Allen restructured his current contract. Allen’s annual salary will decrease $ 200,000 each year from 2022-25. Allen’s contract will run through the 2027 season. “We did not meet the standard that I expect from our football program, and that starts with me,” Allen said. “This season was not acceptable and we will work to address it.”
Trayce Jackson-Davis Scores Assembly Hall Record 43 Points as Indiana beats Marshall 90-79
Trayce Jackson-Davis scored 22 of his career high 43 points as Indiana Men’s Basketball held off the Marshall Thundering Herd 90-79 at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall Saturday Night to improve to 6-0 on the season. Jackson-Davis set an Assembly Hall Record in the process breaking the old record of 42 points set by Steve Alford in 1987. Jackson-Davis had a pervious career-high of 34 last season at Michigan State. The last time an Indiana Player scored over 43 points was current IU head Coach Mike Woodson, who scored 48 against Illinois on March 3, 1979.
Marshall led 42-41 at halftime. The Thundering Herd love to play an up and down style of basketball under coach Dan D’Antoni who coached under his brother Mike and alongside Coach Woodson in the NBA. Marshall went on a 17-0 run to lead 34-22 with 6:00 minutes to go in the first half. Taevion Kinsey scored 21 points, Andrew Taylor added 20 and Obinna Anochili-Killen added 16 points, 8 rebounds and 3 blocks off the bench. The Thundering Herd were 32-65 from the field for 49 precent, 5-16 from three for 3 percent and 10-13 from the line for 77 percent. Marshall had 26 rebounds, 12 turnovers, 11 assists, 7 steals, and 4 blocks. The Thundering Herd are 4-1 on the season and will be one of the teams to watch in Conference USA this season.
Xavier Johnson added 20 points for Indiana and got in Jackson-Davis’s ear during the game. “I have never, ever, seen anybody get 43. I told him, don’t get fooled. They don’t want to double you. You’re an All-American. You’re the best player in America. “So, I’m like, go get 40, brother. That’s disrespectful to us and to him.” Johnson Said in the Press Conference after the game. It’s the best game Johnson has had since he transferred from Pittsburgh in the offseason. It worked as Jackson-Davis added 5 rebounds, 5 blocks, 4 assists, and 2 steals in 37 minutes after only taking 7 shots against Jackson State Last Tuesday.
The Hoosiers were 34-59 for 57 percent from the field, 8-15 for 53 percent from beyond the arc and 14-19 from the free throw line for 73 percent. Race Thompson added 10 rebounds as Hoosiers had 36 for the game. Indiana had 14 assists, 10 steals, 6 blocks, and 15 turnovers.
Mike Woodson is 6-0 in his first season as Indiana Head Coach and that the first time since Branch McCracken in 1938-39 that Hoosier Head Coach as started 6-0. McCraken was 7-0 to start that season. Woodson and the Hoosiers will have the chance to start 7-0 Tuesday night at Syracuse in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge at 7pm on ESPN2.
Indiana Women’s Basketball Holds Off Miami Florida 53-51
The Indiana Women’s Basketball Team beat the Miami Hurricanes 53-50 in the Baha Mar Pink Flamingo Championship in Nassau the Bahamas Saturday Night. The Hoosiers split a pair of games on the island after falling to defending national champion Stanford Thursday afternoon. Miami missed a last second three-point attempt that gave the Hoosiers the victory and improves to 5-1 on the year. Miami falls to 4-2 after losing to Washington State Thursday afternoon.
The Hoosiers were led with a double-double by Mackenzie Holmes with 14 points and 11 rebounds her first double-double of the season and her 9th of her career. Ali Patberg added 13 points, Aleska Gulbe added 11, and Grace Breger scored 11 points. Indiana was 20-44 from the field for 44 percent, 2-9 from three-point range for 22 percent and 11-21 from the foul line for 52 percent. Indiana had 43 rebounds, 10 assists, 4 steals, and 1 block. Head Coach Teri Moren will point to the team’s 24 turnovers as a stat that needs to be corrected with a lot tough games coming up.
Miami was led by Kelsey Marshall with 20 points the only player in double figures for the Hurricanes. Miami was 20-59 from the field for 34 percent, 5-18 from three-point range for 27 percent and 6-12 from free throw line for 50 percent. The Hurricanes had 28 rebounds, 11 assists, 15 steals, 1 block and 12 turnovers.
Indiana will host North Carolina State Thursday at 7pm in a rematch of last year’s NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 game in San Antonio Texas in which the Hoosiers won 73-70 on March 27th. The Wolfpack are 6-1 on the year and beat Maryland 78-60, and Washington State 62-34 in the same tournament the Hoosiers competed in this past week on the island Nibey.
Indiana Men’s Soccer Ends Season with Overtime Loss to Washington in NCAA Tournament
The 2021 Indiana Men’s Soccer season came to a close Saturday afternoon as the Hoosiers lost 3-2 to the 2nd seed Washington Huskies in the 3rd round of the NCAA Tournament in Seattle. The 15th seeded Hoosiers end the season at 15-6-1 and reached the NCAA Tournament for the 35 straight season and sweet 16 for the seventh season in a row which is one of two programs to do so.
Washington the Number 2 seed improves to 16-1-2 overall and will host 10th seed St Louis next weekend in the Quarterfinals. Washington scored in the 97th minute on a golden goal by Dylan Teves who scored a hattrick with goals in the 48th and 75th minute of the match. Indiana took the lead twice with Victor Bazerra scoring in the 29th Minute and Spencer Glass in the 52nd minute. But it was Teves who equalized and got the game winner to send Washington to the Elite 8. This game was moved from 5 PM Pacific Time to Noon Pacific time because of heavy rain that was expected in the Pacific Northwest late Saturday afternoon.
The Huskies outshot the Hoosiers 19-10, 7-4 with shots on goal, 7-3 on corners, 5-0 on offsides calls and 11-10 on fouls. Washington made 2 saves and Indiana goalkeeper Roman Celentano made 4 saves on the day.
