Indiana Men’s Basketball Falls in Double Overtime at Syracuse
The Indiana Hoosiers fell to Syracuse 112-110 in double overtime in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse New York Tuesday Night. The Hoosiers are 6-1 on the season and will host Nebraska this Saturday at Noon in the first Big Ten Conference game of the season.
Junior/Sophomore Forward Trayce Jackson-Davis led the way with 31 points and 16 rebounds. This was his 25th career double-double. Senior/Junior Forward Miller Kopp added a career-high 28 points for IU. Graduate Junior Guard Parker Stewart also scored in double digits with 20 points after hitting six three-point shots. Redshirt Senior/Junior Forward Race Thompson tallied a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds.
Syracuse is 4-3 on the season and was led by the Boehiem Brothers Buddy and Jimmy, who scored 27 and 26 respectively. Joseph Girard III scored 22 points, Jessie Edwards added 17, and Cole Swider added 14. The Orange were 13-34 from the three-point line while the Hoosiers were 11-27.
Syracuse has beaten Indiana the last 6 meetings and the Hoosiers last beat Orange in the 1987 National Championship Game in New Orleans. The Hoosiers were down 49-33 at half and outscored the Orange 55-39 in the second half. Both teams scored 9 points in the first overtime and the Orange outscored the Hoosiers 12-10 in the second overtime to get the win before 21,330 at the Carrier Dome.
Lighthouse Christian Splits Girls and Boys Basketball Doubleheader Martinsville Tabernacle
Lighthouse Christian beat Martinsville Tabernacle 63-29 in Boys High School Basketball action at Lighthouse Christian Tuesday Night. Tristian Web led the way for the Lions with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Zed Harbstriet had 12 points and 11 rebounds, Will Wickstrom had 8 points and 13 rebounds. Levi Hamlin added 12 points, and Carson Jones added 11 for the Lions who are 1-1 under first year head coach Jeff Mills.
In the First Game of the Doubleheader Martinsville Tabernacle beat Lighthouse Christian Girls Basketball 56-16. Emma Roll scored 20 points, Annie Sichting added 19 and Abby Doyle 14 for Martinsville Tabernacle who went a 26-0 run in the 3rd quarter after Lighthouse Christian starting point guard Mardi Grossman did not return for the 2nd half. Lighthouse was led by Abagail Rousey with 7 points and 12 Rebounds as Lions fall to 2-5 on the season.
In other Girls Basketball action Edgewood is now 7-0 after beating Bloomfield 43-41. Columbus East beat Bloomington North 59-42 as the Cougars fall 4-4 and Seymour beat Bloomington South 53-51 as the Panthers fall to 1-6 on the season.
Indiana Football’s Micah McFadden Named All-Big Ten Second Team
Indiana senior linebacker Micah McFadden earned second-team All-Big Ten honors from the league’s coaches and media, the conference announced on Tuesday afternoon. McFadden was recognized for the third-straight year after he collected first-team distinction in 2020 and honorable-mention laurels in 2019. Graduate transfer defensive end Ryder Anderson and senior cornerback Jaylin Williams collected honorable-mention recognition from the media.
McFadden led the team with 77 tackles, 49 solos, 15.5 for loss (3rd in the Big Ten, T-16th nationally), 6.5 sacks (T-6th in the Big Ten), two forced fumbles, and five quarterback hurries, with one fumble recovery (T-1st on the team) and three pass breakups. The Tampa native is the team leader with 14 sacks and 37 tackles for loss (T-6th in program history), while he shares second with four interceptions. He owns 216 stops, 149 solo, three forced fumbles, one fumble recovery, three breakups, and 14 hurries in 45 games (31 starts).
Anderson finished second to McFadden with 3.5 sacks and 8.5 TFLs. He led the IU defensive linemen with 48 tackles and added one forced fumble and four QBHs in 12 starts. Williams closed the year tied for third in the Big Ten with 11 PBUs. He added 41 stops, one for loss, in 11 games (9 starts). All-Big Ten honors on offense will be announced today.
Norte Dame Football Coach Brian Kelly Leaves For LSU
In a move that shook the college football world. Brian Kelly announced he was leaving Norte Dame after 12 seasons and accepting the head coaching position at LSU. The move was first reported Monday evening and became official by LSU Tuesday Morning. The 60-year-old Kelly will be introduced today 1 PM Eastern time.
Kelly agreed to a 10 year 95 million deal with the Tigers that includes incentives. Kelly will replace Ed Orgeron who the school announced on October 22nd would not return as head coach less than two years after going undefeated and winning the national championship. LSU finished the regular season at 6-6 and will go to a bowl game. Orgeron announced he will not coach the bowl game and offensive line coach Brad Davis will coach the Tigers.
Kelly is the all-time winningest coach at Norte Dame surpassing Knute Rockne earlier this season. Kelly has a 113-40 record including 21 wins that were vacated from the 2012 and 2013 seasons by the NCAA. Kelly took the Irish to the 2012 BCS National Title Game falling to Alabama and two College Football Playoff Appearances in 2018 and 2020. Kelly is 263-96-2 as college coach winning 2 National Titles at Division II Grand Valley State in Michigan and was 34-6 in at Cinicnnati with 2 bowl apperances before coming to Norte Dame.
Norte Dame is 11-1 on the season, ranked 6th in the College Football Playoff with their only loss coming at home on October 2nd to #4 and unbeaten Cincinnati.
