ISP Master Trooper Mark Clephane Retires after 33 Years
Master Trooper Mark Clephane worked his final shift and went “Off Duty” by going 10-42 with the Indiana State Police, after 33 years of dedicated service, M/Trooper Clephane is an Indianapolis native who graduated from Southport High School in 1985. He then went on to serve in The United States Air Force as a Security Police Officer primarily serving as a Personal Protection Detail for high-ranking officials until he was Honorably Discharged in 1988.

He began his career with ISP in November of 1988 when he graduated from the 46th Recruit Academy. Upon graduation, he was assigned to the Bloomington District where he spent his career serving as a Trooper until 1994 when he became a District Detective. In 1996, Clephane was promoted to the rank of First Sergeant to serve as the District Investigative Commander until 2009 when he returned as a “Road Trooper” serving Monroe and Lawrence Counties.

Indiana State Police Bloomington District Commander Lieutenant Paul Bucher said, “Mark has been a valuable asset to the District for over three decades, his dedication to public safety and to the citizens of Indiana is commendable.”

In Retirement, M/Trp. Clephane will begin his next career as an Enforcement Agent with the Indiana Gaming Commission. He is also looking forward to spending more time with his wife Amy, and their five adult children and three grandchildren. The ISP tradition will continue as his twin brother Master Trooper Mike Clephane continues to serve the Bloomington District and his daughter Haley, who just received her conditional offer of employment, is scheduled to begin the 82nd Recruit academy in January 2022.

BIG TEN and others making Student-Athlete Health and Wellness a Priority
The ACC, Big Ten, and Pac-12 NCAA Athletic Conferences have announced a joint initiative entitled “Teammates for Mental Health,” which is designed to raise awareness about the importance of mental health and wellness among their more than 27,000 student athletes. This initiative builds upon the work all three conferences continue to dedicate toward mental health, including the creation of dedicated task forces and cabinets comprised of mental health professionals on campuses at the 41 world-class institutions that comprise the ACC, Big Ten, and Pac-12.

The ACC, Big Ten, and Pac-12 are again coming together to officially tip off Teammates for Mental Health starting with the 2021 Big Ten/ACC Women’s and Men’s Basketball Challenge, a series of 28 contests November 29-December 2, which will highlight the importance of mental health and wellness. The initiative includes a public service announcement (PSA) featuring women’s and men’s basketball head coaches and the commissioners from all three conferences.

The Big Ten Conference formed the Big Ten Mental Health and Wellness Cabinet in 2019 to promote optimal mental health for student-athletes. The cabinet is comprised of 31 individuals representing a wide range of disciplines, including mental health educators, medical doctors, faculty athletic representatives and senior woman administrators.

Greater Bloomington Chamber of Commerce seeks nominations for Educator of the Year
The Chamber’s Success School seeks nominations for the 21st Annual Educator of the Year Awards Ceremony to be held on March 3rd. Teachers, program directors, counselors, administrators, instructional staff, and special programs from either Monroe County Community School Corporation or Richland Bean-Blossom district county are eligible for this recognition.

Nominations are due by January 10th, 2022 to be eligible for consideration.

This Week in Hoosier History


1923 – Frank Reynolds was born in East Chicago. He attended Bishop Noll Institute in Hammond and went on to graduate from Wabash College. He was awarded a Purple Heart in World War II. Beginning a broadcasting career at WWCA Radio in Gary, he moved into television where he rose to the anchor position on ABC’s “World News Tonight.”
