Indiana Men’s Basketball travels to Syracuse for Big Ten/ACC Challenge
The Indiana Men’s Basketball Team will hit the road for the first time this season when they travel to Syracuse for tonight’s 7 PM matchup with Orange on ESPN2. Indiana is coming off 90-79 victory against Marshall in which Trayce Jackson-Davis scored a career high and set a new Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall scoring record with 43 points. Jackson-Davis was named the national player of the week on Monday by ESPN College Basketball Analyst Dick Vitale and ESPN.com.
Indiana is 6-0 under first year head coach Mike Woodson. It’s the best start for a Hoosier head coach since Branch McCracken went 7-0 in the 1938-39 season. The Hoosiers are averaging 77.5 points per game and are giving up 57.1 on defense. Hoosier fans are pleased with the commitment to defense after struggling under former coach Archie Miller.
Trayce Jackson-Davis is averaging 20.5 points and 7.7 rebounds along with 23 blocks on the season. Xavier Johnson who is coming off his best game as Hoosier Saturday night with 20 points, averages 11.8 points per game and is the team leader with 23 assists. Race Thompson averages 8.7 points along with 8.0 rebounds per game and has pulled down a team leading 48 boards this season. The Hoosiers will have Freshman Logan Duncomb available after serving a three-game suspension for violating team rules. Rob Phinsee has missed the last three games with a lower leg injury and is starting to practice again with the team. Trey Galloway remains out after surgery for his broken wrist he suffered in the St John’s game.
Syracuse is 3-3 on the season and has five players that average double figures. Buddy Boehiem 20 points per game and his brother Jimmy 12.3 points per game are the sons of head coach Jim Boehiem. Buddy Boehiem is the team leader in steals with 1.8 per contest. Joseph Girard III averages 13.8 points per game and a team leading 4.7 assists per game. Cole Swider averages 12.5 points and team leading 6.8 rebounds. Jesse Edwards averages 11.8 points and team leading 2.7 blocks. The Orange average 78.7 points per game and are known for their famous 2-3 zone defense that Jim Boehiem has used for years.
Jim Boehiem has been the head coach at Syracuse since 1976. He has won 982 games and lost 408. He won the 2003 National Championship and has been to 5 final fours. Boehiem was the coach when Indiana beat Syracuse 74-73 in the 1987 National Championship Game in New Orleans Louisiana when Keith Smart hit the famous game winning shot, which is the last time the Hoosiers have won the National Championship.
Defending Super Bowl Champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers defeat Indianapolis Colts 38-31
The defending Super Bowl Champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers beat the Indianapolis Colts 38-31 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis Sunday afternoon. The Colts are 6-6 on the season and 3-4 at home while Tampa Bay is 8-3 and 3-3 on the road. Tom Brady led the Buccaneers 25-34 226 yards passing 1 touchdown and one interception. Leonard Fournette had 17 carries for 100 yards and 3 touchdowns and Brady found him on a 4-yard pass with 1:56 to go before halftime for his 4th touchdown of the day. Rob Gronkowski had 7 receptions for 123 yards.
Carson Wentz was 27-44 passing for 306 yards 3 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. Wentz threw touchdown passes to Jack Doyle, Ashton Dulin and T.Y. Hilton. Doyle was the team’s leading receiver with 6 catches for 81 yards. Jonathan Taylor had 16 carries for 83 yards and a touchdown. The Colts led 24-14 at halftime. Tampa Bay scored 14 in the 3rd quarter to make it 24-21 going into the 4th. The Buccaneers scored on a 21-yard field goal by Ryan Succop with 10:06 to go in the 4th to make 31-24. The Colts when back to Jonathan Taylor running the ball that led to a 4-yard touchdown run with 3:29 to go make 31-31. Tampa Bay found the end zone with 20 seconds to go as Fournette had 28 yard run to make 38-31. The Colts had one last chance and Wentz was picked off at the 1-yard line as time expired.
The Colts will travel to Houston this Sunday to face the Texans in 1 Pm kickoff. The Texans are 2-9 after 21-14 home loss to the New York Jets Sunday afternoon.
Indiana Men’s Tennis announces 2022 Schedule
The Indiana Men’s Tennis Team and head coach Jeremy Wurtzman announced its 2022 schedule on Monday afternoon. After being limited to conference-only action last spring, the Hoosiers return to playing a complete schedule with 13 non-conference matches and nine conference matches. IU opens the season on January 22nd with a pair of home matches against Toledo and Bellarmine. The week after, IU hits the road for the first time. The Hoosiers will head to Auburn, Ala. to play Auburn and Vanderbilt.
During the beginning of February, IU will host six-straight non-conference opponents before heading to Louisville to close out the month. IU finishes the non-conference slate of the schedule with a spring break trip to Tampa to play South Florida. The Big Ten portion of the schedule features home matches against Purdue, Ohio State, Penn State, Wisconsin and Nebraska. IU will make trips to Michigan State, Michigan, Illinois and Northwestern. Following the regular season, IU will compete in the Big Ten Tournament hosted on the campus of Wisconsin.
Indiana Volleyball closes out 2021 Season with road losses at Purdue and Wisconsin
The 2021 Indiana Volleyball season came to close Saturday night as the Hoosiers lost to 5th ranked Wisconsin 3-0 and 6th ranked Purdue 3-1 last Friday. Wisconsin claims the Big Ten Championship after knocking off Nebraska 3-1 Last Friday night with a 17-3 conference record. Before the Purdue game Indiana Head Volleyball coach Steve Aird presented a signed sympathy card from the entire program to Purdue Head Volleyball Coach Dave Shondell and his brother John who is an assistant coach after losing their father Dr Don Shondell on November 23rd at age 92. Dr. Don Shondell founded the Men’s Volleyball program at Ball State University and helped create a tradition of excellence with the Muncie community, becoming the best place in the state for Club, High School, and College Volleyball.
The Hoosiers lost to Purdue 13-25, 25-21, 14-25 and 20-25. Junior middle blocker Kaley Rammelsberg led the Indiana attack with 10 kills and a hitting percentage of .444. Rammelsberg also had two blocks. Senior Breana Edwards led the team in kills with 12. She also had a solo block. Freshman outside hitter Mady Saris was in double-figure kills with 10. She led the way on defense with three blocks. Junior defensive specialist Paula Cerame had a team-high 24 dig and Graduate student Brooke Westbeld had a double-double with 22 assists and 10 digs.
The Hoosiers lost to Wisconsin 14-25, 9-25 and 15-25. Sophomore outside hitter Morgan Geddes had a hitting percentage of .500 on five kills. Freshman setter Camryn Haworth had nine assists while graduate student Brooke Westbeld had eight. Junior defensive specialist Paula Cerame put up a team-leading two aces and Senior outside hitter Breanna Edwards and Haworth served up an ace each. The Hoosiers end the season at 10-22 and 4-16 in the Big Ten.
