Plane Crash in Monroe County Claims One Life
The Indiana State Police is currently assisting the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) with the investigation of an airplane crash. The crash took place south of the Monroe County Airport near Tower Road in Monroe County.
At approximately 8:15 p.m. on Friday, December 17, 2021, Monroe County Central Dispatch received 911 calls reporting that a small plane had crashed in the area. When Troopers and first responders arrived at the scene, they located a single-engine fixed wing plane on fire and firefighters from the Van Buren Fire Department were able to extinguish the fire.
The preliminary investigation revealed that there was one occupant in the plane who was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Monroe County Coroner. The victim’s name is being withheld until proper identification and notification has been made to their next of kin.
Investigators from the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board have been contacted and the crash scene will be turned over to them upon their arrival. The Indiana State Police will continue to assist the FAA, however, any determinations made relating to the cause of the crash will be released by their agency concluding a thorough investigation.
The Indiana State Police were assisted by the Federal Aviation Administration, National Transportation Safety Board, Monroe County Sheriff Department, Van Buren Fire Department, and the Monroe County Coroner.

Indiana AG responds to 5th Circuit Court
Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita issued the following statement following the US Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit’s decision to dissolve the Fifth Circuit’s stay of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (OSHA) rule implementing the Biden Administration’s vaccine mandate order:December
“We will not be deterred by the Sixth Circuit’s decision. I am committed to defending Hoosiers’ liberty,” said Attorney General Rokita. “We have already appealed this finding to the US Supreme Court. These outlandish mandates will not be tolerated.”
Two Indiana cities make “Most Dangerous” list
According to recently released crime statics from 2020, 2 Indiana cities have made an infamous list . . . most dangerous in the US. The list was compiled based upon the number of reported violent crimes per a population of 100,000, as well as murder and poverty rates.
25. Terre Haute, Indiana
Violent crimes per 100k people: 1,381.1
Number of violent crimes: 837 — 148th highest of 1,287 cities (tied)
Murders reported in 2020: 6 — 283rd highest of 1,287 cities (tied)
Poverty rate: 26.4% — 85th highest of 1,287 cities
9. South Bend, Indiana
Violent crimes per 100k people: 1,728.4
Number of violent crimes: 1,765 — 72nd highest of 1,287 cities
Murders reported in 2020: 28 — 78th highest of 1,287 cities (tied)
Poverty rate: 23.6% — 139th highest of 1,287 cities
