6th Ranked Indiana Women’s Basketball defeats Wisconsin
The 6th Ranked Indiana Women’s Basketball team won at Wisconsin Wednesday Night 76-53. The Hoosiers have won 11 straight road games which is the most for a Power 5 School. Indiana has won 8 in row along with 10 of the last 11 meetings against the Badgers. The Hoosiers lead the all-time series 52-24. Indiana is now 12-2 and 4-0 in the Big Ten and the matches the best start in Big Ten play matching 2019-20 team.
The Hoosiers were led in scoring by Ali Patberg with 18 points, Mackenzie Holmes with 16 points and she was named to the Wooden Award Midseason top 25 list earlier in the day Wednesday. Aleska Glube had 13 Points, Nicole Cardano-Hillary with 11 and Grace Berger had 9 points and 11 assists. The Hoosiers got 5 points from Kaitlin Peterson who missed Sunday’s game against Maryland. Kiandra Browne scored 4 points. Arielle Wisne and Mona Zaric played but did not score. Chloe Moore-McNeil, Grace Waggoner, and Keyarah Berry were unavailable leaving the Hoosiers with 9 players for the second game in a row. Indiana was 28-58 from the field for 48 percent, 8-19 from three-point range for 42 percent, and 12-14 for 85 percent. Indiana pulled down 36 rebounds, 18 assists, 4 steals, 2 blocks, and committed 13 turnovers.
Wisconsin 3-10 0-3 in the Big Ten was led in scoring by Julie Pospisilova with 15 points, Sydney Hillard added 10 points. Halle Douglass scored 9 points. Wisconsin was 20-56 rom the field for 35 percent, 6-21 from three-point range for 28 percent and 7-9 from the foul line for 77 percent. Wisconsin pulled down 25 rebounds, 12 assists, 1 block, 8 steals, and committed 14 turnovers.
Indiana will have a week to get ready for Nebraska 13-1 and 2-1 in the Big Ten next Thursday Night at 6pm on the Big Ten Network. The Cornhuskers beat 8th ranked Michigan Tuesday Night 79-58 in Lincoln.
Indiana Men’s Basketball Hosts Ohio State
Indiana Men’s Basketball is in action at 7 PM this evening when they welcome the Ohio State Buckeyes to Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. The Hoosiers come off a 61-58 loss at Penn State Sunday. Indiana is 10-3 and 1-2 overall and the Hoosiers have not lost a game in the state of Indiana this season. Indiana is 9-0 at home and 1-0 in Indianapolis when they beat Norte Dame 64-58 in the Crossroads Classic December 18th.
Forward Trayce Jackson-Davis is living up to his preseason accolades, averaging 19.3 points (5th in B1G), 8.2 rebounds (5th), shooting 59.9% from the floor (5th) and contributing 3.1 blocked shots per game (1st). He set a Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall record by scoring 43 points against Marshall, breaking the previous mark (42) set by Steve Alford against Michigan State. The leading returning scorer in the Big Ten has been named a first-team 2021-22 Preseason All-American by the Associated Press, and selected to the watch list for the Karl Malone Watch, the NABC Player of the Year, Wooden Award and Naismith Award. He has had four double-doubles this season and 26 in his career with IU posting a 20-6 record in those games. Jackson-Davis now has scored 1,200 points as a Hoosier, rating 39th all-time in IU lore. He had 20 points, five rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots at PSU. Jackson-Davis has been named to the Wooden Midseason 25 watch list that was announced Wednesday afternoon.
Race Thompson is averaging 10.8 points per game and is eighth in the league in rebounding at 8.0 per game and has six games of 10 rebounds or more this season. Xavier Johnson is averaging 10 points per game. In the last three games, Johnson (9.3) and Rob Phinisee (8.3) are averaging 17.6 points per game combined. Phinisee is shooting a team-best 59% from deep during that time. Johnson is sixth in Big Ten in assists at 4.2 per game. The Hoosiers have been getting a spark off the bench form Jordan Geronimo who in the last five games has made 11-of-19 field goal attempts and is averaging 5.8 rebounds in just 11.8 minutes of action per game. Parker Stewart is shooting 47.5% from long range and is the highest among Big 10 starters. IU is first in the Big Ten and third nationally in field goal percentage defense (35.4%). IU also leads the league in scoring defense (61.6) and is second in Big Ten in blocked shots (5.7), third in the Big Ten in field goal percentage (48.3%) and rebound margin (+8.46), and fourth in 3-point field goal percentage defense (29.6%).
Ohio State is ranked 13 in the AP poll and 12th in the coaches poll. The Buckeyes come in with a 9-2 overall record and 3-0 in the Big 10 after an 87-79 overtime win at Nebraska Sunday Night. The Buckeyes are led by E.J Liddell who averages 19.6 points and 7.3 rebounds per game. Zed Key averages 10.1 and Kyle Young is at 10 points per game. One Player that Hoosier Fans will be fimliar with is Joey Brunk who played the last two seasons at IU before transferring to Ohio State for his final year. Brunk has played in 11 games with two starts for total of 59 Minutes and 39 seconds. Brunk has scored 11 points this season 1.0 point per game average. OSU Coach Chris Holtmann is in his fifth year with the Buckeyes. IU won the last meeting in Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall, 66-54, on January 11, 2020 and the Hoosiers lead the all-time series 108-57 with the Buckeyes winning the last meeting in Columbus 78-59 on February 13, 2021.
Indiana Head Coach Mike Woodson scored 21 points to lead the Hoosiers to a 76-73 overtime win over OSU at home to win the Big Ten Championship on March 2, 1980. He would later be named Big Ten MVP after playing only six conference games due to injury. The game included Isiah Thomas, Butch Carter, and Ray Tolbert for IU and Clark Kellogg, Kelvin Ransey, and Granville Waiters for OSU, all of whom later played in the NBA
Northview Squeaks Past Edgewood Girls Basketball
Northview beat Edgewood 43-42 in Girls Basketball at the Mustang Corral Wednesday Night. Edgewood led 15-12 after the first quarter. Northview used 14-0 run and outscored the Mustangs 18-2 in the second quarter to take 30-17 lead going in to the locker room. The teams scored 11 points each in the 3rd quarter as Northview led 47-28. The Mustangs fought back scoring 19 4th quarter points to just 7 for the Knights.
Claire Sherfield who did not score for Edgewood went down with 2 minutes to go in the 3rd quarter with an ankle injury and did not return. Her twin sister Carly led the rally with 11 points in the 2nd half. Cara Clark led the way with 17 points for Edgewood. Trista Helms missed a shot that could have tied the game. Edgewood had to foul and sent Macey Timberman to the line who sank both free throws to give Northview a 4-point lead. Jaylen Robinson hit a three pointer to cut the lead to 1 and then Northview threw the ball down the court to run out the clock.
Macey Timberman led Northview in scoring with 20 points, Audri Spencer scored 13 and Brooklyn Eldridge scored 10 off the bench. Northview is 14-2 on the season and travels to Greencastle on Friday. Edgewood is 14-4 and travels to Brown County on Friday.
Indiana-Michigan Swimming Meet Canceled
The Indiana swimming and diving meet scheduled for Saturday, January 8, at Canham Natatorium in Ann Arbor Michigan has been canceled. With rising COVID-19 concerns, both schools mutually agreed to cancel the meet for the health and safety of the participants and those connected with the programs. IU’s next scheduled meet is set for Friday, January 14th, at 2pm when the Hoosiers host Number 11/15 Louisville for a dual meet inside Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatics Center.
