IUWBB defeats Wisconsin 76-53
The 6th Ranked Indiana Women’s Basketball team won at Wisconsin Wednesday Night 76-53. The Hoosiers have won 11 straight road games and is now 12-2 and 4-0 in the Big Ten, matching their best start in Big Ten play. The Hoosiers were led in scoring by Ali Patberg with 18 points; Mackenzie Holmes with 16; Aleksa Glube had 13; Nicole Cardano-Hillary 11; and, Grace Berger had 9 points and 11 assists. Indiana was 28-58 from the field for 48 percent, 8-19 from three-point range for 42 percent, and 12-14 from the free throw line for 85 percent. Indiana pulled down 36 rebounds, 18 assists, 4 steals, 2 blocks, and committed 13 turnovers. Indiana will have a week to get ready for Nebraska (13-1, 2-1) next Thursday Night at 6pm on the Big Ten Network. The Cornhuskers are coming off of a win over the 8th ranked Michigan Wolverines.

Cold weather advisory for the region
In anticipation of the extreme cold temperatures over the next few days, the City of Bloomington advises residents for their safety to avoid prolonged outdoor exposure, and to check on elderly family members and neighbors often to assure their safety.

Residents experiencing homelessness are encouraged to seek shelter and/or additional resources at the following locations:

  • Beacon/Shalom Community Center: 812-334-5728, 620 South Walnut Street
  • A Friend’s Place: 812-332-1444, 919 South Rogers Street
  • Wheeler Mission: 812-333-1905, 215 South Westplex Avenue
  • New Hope Family Shelter: 812-334-9840, 301 West Second Street
  • Amethyst House: 812-336-2812 (men’s house) or 812-336-2666 (women’s house)
  • Middle Way House: (24-hour crisis line) 812-336-0846, 338 South Washington Street

Additionally, through at least February 23, the Bloomington Fire Department will keep stations 1 and 2 open as warming stations for temporary relief during extreme weather conditions. Individuals may come in to warm up at BFD Station 1 (headquarters), 226 South College Avenue, and Station 2, 209 Fairfield Drive at any time of day or night. Overnight accommodations are not available at those locations and masks will be required while in the stations to keep everyone safe. Additional warming stations are being offered at the Monroe Fire Protection District’s Perry, Clear Creek, Indiana Creek, Bloomington, and Van Buren locations, as well as at the Ellettsville Fire Department Headquarters.

Build Operate Transfer Model presented to Spencer City Council 
Envoy Construction presented the Spencer Town Council a Build Operate Transfer Model (BOT) for the new Spencer Town Hall. The BOT (or P3 Delivery) is a public-private partnership which offers less risk to the municipality, and demonstrates greater guarantee of budget and timeline. Additionally, with the BOT, long-term maintenance can be part of the contract as well as innovative financing options through the developer. More details of the project will be revealed through upcoming Spencer Town Meetings.

Products recently recalled
Attorney General Todd Rokita is encouraging all Hoosiers who purchased consumer products that were recalled in December to take advantage of the remedies available to them. I f you purchased an item in December that has been recalled, then you should immediately stop using the product and see what forms of reimbursement the company that sold or manufactured the product is offering. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the following consumer products were recalled in December:

If you believe you recently purchased a recalled product, stop using it, and check its recall notice (linked above for all aforementioned products). Then follow the notice’s instructions, including where to return the product, how to get the product fixed, how to dispose of the product, how to receive a refund for the product, or what steps must be taken to receive a replacement product. To view recalls issued prior to December, visit the Consumer Protection Safety Commission website.

This Week in Hoosier History

1916 – The Indiana State Board of Agriculture met at the Statehouse. They began planning the 1916 State Fair, which would include an exposition commemorating the state’s centennial. Governor Samuel Ralston addressed the group and proposed the construction of a Fine Arts Building on the fairgrounds.
