Lighthouse Christian Wins Girls and Boys Basketball Doubleheader Over Seven Oaks
Lighthouse Christian Girls and Boys Basketball beat Seven Oaks Classical School 61-5 in the Girls Game and 79-11 in the Boys Game Tuesday Night at Lighthouse Christian. Seven Oaks is located in Ellettsville and Lighthouse Christian is just south of Bloomington. The Lighthouse Girls honored there three seniors before the game Elissa Chasteen, Mardi Grossman and Gracie Hughes. Chasteen and Hughes scored 10 points each and Grossman added 7 and played more minutes in this game and she has had all season due to health issues. Marissa Webb led the way 12 Points Abagail Rousey added 9 points Zoe Crites added 8 and Victoria Mann scored 7 for the Lady Lions. Lighthouse led 41-2 at half. Seven Oaks hit 2 field goals and was 1-8 from the free throw line. Lighthouse Christian is 5-9 on the season and travels to Evansville Christian Friday at 6:30pm.
In The Boys Game 10 of 11 Lighthouse players scored with Sean Flynn scoring 14 points, Carson Jones 11, Zed Harbstreit 10 points. It was a balanced attack for Lighthouse with Coda Snyder scoring 9, Chauncey Craig 8, Levi Hamlin 8, Andrew Speigel 7, Logan Bridges 6, Will Wickstrom 2, Noah Bridges 2 and Nathan Dale did not score. Lighthouse led 49-7 at half. Nick Weaver scored 9 points while Ryder Caswell scored the other 2 points for Seven Oaks. Lighthouse Christian is 8-5 on the season and travels to Columbus Christian Friday at 7:30pm.
In Girls Basketball, Brownstown Central beat Bloomington North 48-44 as the Cougars fall to 9-10 on the season and Host Columbus North Friday at 7:30pm. Martinsville Beat Bloomington South 42-41 as the Panthers fall to 3-16 and host Terre Haute South Tomorrow night at 7:30pm.
Indiana Women’s Basketball Games with Michigan State and Iowa Postponed
Indiana and Michigan State will not play their scheduled Women’s Basketball game at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall tonight due to COVID Concerns within in the Indiana Program. The postponement was announced Tuesday afternoon. 24 hours later Indiana announced their game Sunday evening at Iowa will be postponed. Both programs for both games will actively work with the Big Ten Conference to find a rescheduled date to play the game. Per the amended Big Ten Conference 2021-22 Forfeiture Guidelines, this game will be postponed, and the Conference office will coordinate the rescheduling process with both schools. If the game is not able to be rescheduled, it would count as a “no contest” for both teams.
Indiana is ranked 6th in the Associated Press Poll and 5th in the Coaches Poll this week after a 73-68 win over Purdue Sunday at Mackey Arena. The Hoosiers had just 9 available players after guard Nicole Cardano-Hillary entered health and safety protocols before the game Sunday. Mackenzie Holmes has missed the last two game with a knee injury and will be out for some time.
Indiana is 14-2 and 6-0 in the Big Ten. Michigan State is 9-8 overall and 3-3 in the Big Ten and will play at Minnesota on Sunday at 2pm. Iowa is 10-4 and 4-1 in the Big Ten and at Minnesota tomorrow night on the Big Ten Network at 8pm.
Indiana Men’s Soccer Announces 2022 Newcomers
Head coach Todd Yeagley and Indiana men’s soccer on Tuesday announced the addition of seven newcomers as the program looks forward to the 2022 season. “We’re really excited to have these seven [players] join us this fall,” IU head men’s soccer coach Todd Yeagley said in Press Release. “All of them fill important roles on our team based on departing players, competition and, most importantly, to make our team championship quality this fall. Our fans [and] everyone associated with IU soccer will enjoy these kids and watching them compete at Bill Armstrong Stadium this fall.”
This group of incoming student-athletes, which features two transfers and five members of IU’s 2022 signing class, is made up of athletes from around the Midwest, including two Indiana natives, and one player from Portland, Oregon. The two-transfer student-athletes, sophomore goalkeeper JT Harms and junior forward Karsen Henderlong have arrived in Bloomington and are participating in spring training with the Hoosiers.
Transfers: JT Harms Goalkeeper | 6-1 | Whitefish Bay, Wisc. | Plain City (Ohio) High School /Duke
Harms will immediately provide competition to the goalkeeper position heading into the spring and fall season. As a sophomore, Harms earned shutout wins in both matches he started. During his youth career, Harms joined the Columbus Crew SC Academy during the 2018-19 campaign, then started all 11 matches during a shortened 2019-20 season.
Karsen Henderlong | Forward | 6-3 | Crown Point, Ind. | Crown Point High School/Xavier
Henderlong was named All-BIG EAST first team this fall after leading Xavier in goals and points for the third straight season. Following the campaign, Top Drawer Soccer ranked Henderlong No. 87 on its Postseason Top 100 list. Over three seasons for the Musketeers, Henderlong tallied 22 goals and seven assists, totaling 51 points over 45 matches played. The Crown Point, Indiana, native returns to his home state for his senior season.
Incoming Freshman: Luka Bezerra | Forward | 6-2 | Chicago, Ill. | Jones College Prep
Chicago native Luka Bezerra has played 11 seasons for Chicago Fire Academy where, most recently, he helped the club win the U19 MLS Next Cup in 2021. The younger brother of former Hoosier, Victor Bezerra who signed a professional contract with Chicago last month, Luka will bolster an already strong IU attack.
Noah Joseph | Midfielder | 6-0 | Lake Oswego, Ore. | Lake Oswego High School
A winger with pace, Noah Joseph comes to Indiana all the way from Oregon, where he competed for the Portland Timbers Academy. During his time with the Timbers, Joseph trained with Portland’s first team while helping the academy reach their first MLS Next Playoffs. Joseph’s father, Miles, is a former MLS and U.S. Men’s National Team player and currently serves as an assistant coach for the Portland Timbers
Breckin Minzey | Midfielder | 5-11 | Granger, Ind. | Indiana University High School
An Indiana native, Minzey chose to stay close to home for his collegiate soccer experience. As a member of Indiana Fire Academy, Minzey helped his U17 squad qualify for the 2021 MLS Next Playoffs. Minzey also played for Indy Eleven’s academy in the United Soccer League, where he led the team to a USL Academy Championship in 2021.
Seth Stewart | Midfielder | 5-9 | Oswego, Ill. | Oswego East High School
Since joining the Chicago FC United Academy in 2019, Seth Stewart has scored 11 goals and contributed 10 assists. In 2019, he helped his club win the 2019 Bell Sport Cup in Poland. Prior to his time at Chicago FC United, Stewart spent eight years in the Chicago Fire Academy.
Jack Wagoner | Midfielder | 5-10 | Chesterfield, Mo. | Marquette High School
A native of the St. Louis, Missouri, area, Jack Wagoner played for St. Louis Scott Gallagher during his youth career, where he was recently selected for the Under-19 MLS Next Best Of match during the 2021 Winter Showcase. This spring, Jack will be competing with St. Louis City SC as an amateur prior to its inaugural year in MLS.
Indiana Water Polo Announces 2022 Captains
Indiana water polo head coach Taylor Dodson has announced its three captains for the 2022 season in Zoe Crouch, Lanna Debow and Izzy Mandema. The trio were all 2021 MPSF All-Academic and Academic All-Big Ten award winners and return as three of IU’s statistical leaders from a season ago as they bring back a combined 134 goals, 69 assists and 23 field blocks.
Crouch returns after tallying a team-high 45 assists last season along with 39 goals, 25 steals and three field blocks. Her 45 assists rank 10th most in a single season in IU history as she played in all 27 games last season. “This is my first-time being team captain and I’m extremely honored my teammate and coaches have allowed me to be captain. I think it’s one of the best honors you can get, and I’m really excited to get to work with the team. I think being a captain is something that is a really big deal. For the upcoming season I’m really excited to see all of our hard work, not only from training camp but also the last couple of months. We have some really big goals and I’m excited to watch us accomplish them.” Crouch Said in Press Release.
Debow appeared in all 27 games in 2021 for Indiana, where she added 32 goals, 20 assists and tied a team-high 10 field blocks. She had a season-high four goals against Salem and California while recording a season-high 7 points against Salem. “I am honored to be able to represent this team and we left off last year with something really special. I want to continue that this year, and really push each other to be our best. This team has a special bond, and we bring each other up when one is down. Our team never back down from any challenges and is really excited to take every single challenge on. We also have an all-female staff that are all great role models who push us to be our best every day.”- Debow Said in a press release.
Mandema is coming off a season in which she earned Honorable Mention ACWPC All-America honors after tallying a team-best 62 goals in 2021. She also recorded four assists, 20 steals and a tied a team-high 10 field blocks. “What it means to be a captain to me is to lead this team to greatness and give everything I have. Especially as a senior, I want to leave this program better than I found it, so I’m really excited to lead and guide everyone. This team has grown a lot both mentally and physically from last season, not only do we have a great group of freshmen, but we have also returned everyone from last season. We talk a lot as a team about who we are and who we represent. These are our pillars. We can see how much we are growing each and every day, which pushes us even more. I believe our team has passion. This team wants to give everything they have to this program. It has shown especially t in training camp. With passion come grit, love, and hard work. This team is going to shock the world, and I’m beyond proud to be a part of it.” – Mandema Said in Press Release. Indiana begins the 2022 season at the UCSB Winter Invite in Santa Barbara, California this Friday through Sunday. Indiana will face California Baptist at 12:15 PM ET Friday, Azusa Pacific at 12:15 PM ET and Iona at 6:45 PM ET on Saturday and Ottawa (Arizona) at 1:30pm on Sunday.
