IUWBB to take on Rutgers in their 2022 Big Ten Tournament debut
Indiana University Women’s Basketball will kick off their Big Ten Tournament run this afternoon. The #14 Hoosiers (19-7, 11-5) are the 5th seed in the conference tournament, and will play Rutgers (11-19, 3-14) this afternoon at 2pm at Ganibridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. Rutgers defeated Penn State yesterday in the opening round, to advance in the single elimination tournament. The Hoosiers are coming off of a rough streak, losing 4 of the last 5 games which they had to play in a ten day stretch due to the shuffling of games that had previously been postponed. The winner of this game will take on 4th seed Maryland (21-7, 12-4) tomorrow afternoon.

Mooresville Police stop turns fatal
A 41 year-old man being pursued by Indianapolis Police died in a car accident after attempting to evade Police. The man, whose name is being withheld at the time, crashed into a vehicle after running a red light while fleeing from an attempted Police stop in Mooresville. The motorist initially stopped, but then made a U-turn and drove off speeding, eventually running a red light and hitting another vehicle driven by a 67 year-old woman. Officers helped pull both drivers out of their vehicles. which had caught fire, but they were both pronounced dead at an Indianapolis hospital.

On My Way Pre-K applications for the 2022-2023 school year now available
Indiana’s Office of Early Childhood and Out-of-School Learning is now accepting applications from families statewide who may be eligible for grants for their children to receive free, high-quality, pre-kindergarten education through the On My Way Pre-K program for the 2022-2023 school year. Information about the program and the link to apply can be found at OnMyWayPreK.org.

For the 2022-2023 school year, a child is eligible for an On My Way Pre-K voucher if they will be 4 years old by Aug. 1, 2022, and plan to start kindergarten in the 2023-2024 school year. An eligible child must live in a household with an income below 127% of the federal poverty level and have parents or guardians who are working, going to school, attending job training, or searching for employment.

A limited number of vouchers is available for children who will be 4 years old by Aug. 1, 2022, live in a household with an income up to 185% of the federal poverty level, and have:

  • A parent/guardian who is working, attending job training or an educational program, looking for employment OR
  • A parent/guardian who receives Social Security Disability Insurance or Supplemental Security Income benefits

This Week in Hoosier History

1933 – Virginia Jenckes from Terre Haute became the first woman from Indiana to serve in the United States House of Representatives. She was an energetic advocate for women and strongly supported flood-control legislation and the repeal of prohibition. After serving three terms, she remained in Washington to work for the Red Cross, where she helped create the nation’s first blood bank.
