Public comment periods will be mandatory during Indiana school board meeting
Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb signed into law a new mandate that school boards provide the opportunity for oral, public comments at each public meeting, regardless if the meeting is being held in-person or virtually. The new law will take effect on July 1, 2022.
The original proposal would have mandated the public comment regulations for any local or state agency, but was eventually reduced to only school board meetings. The rationale for the legislation was the suspension of public comment at many school board meetings over the past couple of years in response to the declared health emergency.
